Productive Hoofddorp Pioniers records convincing win vs. HCAW
Nederlands

HOOFDDORP (Neth.) - Hoofddorp Pioniers had a productive afternoon at home and won 10-5 against HCAW to complete its first 3-game series in the Top-4 Pool on Sunday (September 13).

In the opener on Thursday-evening, HCAW trailed, but recorded a small 3-1 win.

On Saturday, Pioniers recorded a convincing 7-0 shutout-victory in the second game.

Today, leading 1-0, Pioniers rallied for five runs in the third inning. HCAW answered with a 4-run rally in the fourth, but Pioniers kept on adding runs from the fifth inning to record a comfortable victory.

Pioniers collected 15 basehits off of five pitchers, including three by Max Draijer. Head Coach Mervin Gario, who was the third baseman again today, singled, doubled, scored twice and batted in three runs. Mark Smit scored three runs.

Eight of the nine starting players had at least one basehit. Seven players scored at least once and six had at least one run batted in. The lone player without either a basehit, run scored or RBI was Jorrit Penseel.

Victor Draijer was 2-for-5 today, meaning he now has a hitting streak of three games in the postseason. He closed the regular season with a 21-game hitting streak.

HCAW got eight basehits today, including homeruns by Arhur Bonevacia and Rodney Daal. Bonevacia batted in three runs.

Hoofddorp Pioniers scored its first run in the bottom of the first inning off of HCAW-starter Nick Keur. The lefthander gave up a lead-off triple to Mark Smit, who scored on an one-out single by Max Draijer. With two outs, Mervin Gario delivered the third basehit in this inning, but Pioniers left runners behind on first and third base.

The home-team then staged a 5-run rally in the third inning, which proved to be decisive. The first six batters all recorded a basehit. Mark Smit and Victor Draijer opened with singles, which led to runners at the corners. Max Draijer followed with a runscoring single, then the bases got loaded on an infield-hit by Joey Eeman. Hereafter, Mervin Gario connected for a baseclearing, 3-run double. With Pioniers now leading 5-0, HCAW made a pitching change, as Jasper Elfrink took over from Nick Keur. The righthander was greeted with a runscoring single by Duco Nujten, which brought in Gario and lifted the lead to 6-0. A flyout and double play ended the at bat, but Pioniers had taken a decisive lead.

Pioniers-starter Lars Broersen encountered no problems in his first three innings. A week ago, the righthander threw a complete game, 9-inning 4-hitter in a win against Curaçao Neptunus. Today, with one out in the first inning, Broersen gave up a single to Linoy Croes, but he was caught stealing moments later. Hereafter, Broersen retired the next seven batters, three of them with a strikeout.

But in the top of the fourth inning, Broersen ran into problems, as he saw HCAW come back, score four runs and narrow the deficit to 6-4. Did six batters in a row produce a basehit for Pioniers in the third inning, in this at bat, the first five did the same for HCAW. Jeandro Tromp led off with a double and scored on a following single by Linoy Croes. Next batter Patrick Bok also singled and hereafter, Arthur Bonevacia drilled the ball over the fence in leftfield for a 3-run homerun. With the score now at 6-4, Rodney Daal doubled. Broersen then struckout Berend Ruben, but got the bases loaded when he gave up a single to Christopher Ge and walked Leandro Anasagasti. That ended Broersen's stay on the mound today. He was relieved by Nathan Diaby, who ended the jam by striking out Raibiëntly Mercalina and getting an inning-ending grounder from Jeandro Tromp. Three runners were left behind and HCAW didn't got another big scoring opportunity in the remainder of the game.

Nathan Diaby retired the side in the fifth and sixth inning. In those at bats, his teammates added three more runs.

In the fifth inning, with one out, Mervin Gario was hit by a pitch, then an error was made on a force play-grounder by Duco Nuijten. A run was scored on a single by Jaison Gijsbertha, which gave Pioniers runners on first and third base and brought in another pitcher. Gio de Graauw took over, but he saw Nuijten score the next run in a double-steal situation.

Another run was added in the sixth. Mark Smit led off with a walk and advanced on a single by Victor Draijer. The bases got loaded when Max Draijer walked. With the bases loaded and no outs, only one run was scored. That was done on a sacrifice fly by Joey Eeman. That moved Victor Draijer to third base. He stranded there, as Max Draijer was caught stealing and a flyout ended the at bat.

In the top of the seventh, now trailing 9-4, HCAW saw two batters hit a line drive, but no runs were scored. Leandro Anasagasti and Kevin Dirksen led off with walks. Hereafter, Jeandro Tromp hit a line drive that was caught by second baseman Duco Nuijten. However, he then made an unnecessary throw to first base trying to double up Dirksen. That led to a throwing error and runners on second and third base. Next batter Linoy Croes then also lined out to Nuijten. This time, he had time enough to complete a double play by throwing the ball to short stop Max Draijer to eliminate Dirksen at second base and end the inning.

Pioniers scored another run in the bottom of the seventh off of new pitcher Bobbie Gnade. With one out, he walked Jaison Gijsbertha, then made a throwing error on a force play-grounder by Jorrit Penseel and got the bases loaded when he gave up a single to Nathan Berkel. Gijsbertha scored on a sacrifice fly by Mark Smit.

HCAW was able to score one more run in the top of the eighth. With two outs, Rodney Daal connected well and hit a homerun.

Pioniers came close to scoring another run in the bottom of the eighth off of Johannes Verroen Garcia. He gave up a single to Max Draijer, then walked Joey Eeman. But a double play and flyout followed.

Yassir Lachkar threw the ninth inning for Pioniers and retired the side to end the game.
