Quick Amersfoort turns 6-0 deficit into win vs. Storks
Nederlands

AMERSFOORT (Neth.) - Quick Amersfoort faced an early 6-0 deficit, but nevertheless left the field victorious, as it turned its opening game against Silicon Storks around on Thursday-evening (September 17) and won 8-6.

Last week, in its first 3-game series in the Bottom-4 Pool, Storks was swept by DSS/Kinheim, while Quick won twice against Twins Oosterhout.

Tonight, Storks appeared to be en route to its first win in this Pool, as the team led 6-0 halfway the fourth inning. But in the three middle innings, Quick came alongside, then took the lead in the seventh. With Quick leading 8-6, the game was ended after 7½ inning due to the 10:30 PM curfew-rule.

Quick collected 12 basehits tonight, including three by Emeron Lourens and Alberto Enrique Ostos.

Storks recorded nine basehits with three players hitting two. Jurriaan Dijk hit two doubles and scored three runs for the team from The Hague.

(September 17)

Storks opened the score with an unearned run in the top of the first inning off of starter Jan-Willem Geerts. With one out, the righthander walked Jurriaan Dijk, then an error followed on a force play-grounder by Luuk Visser, which gave Storks runners on first and third base. After Visser had stolen second base, Joost van den Bergh delivered a runscoring single. Visser stranded on third base, as Geerts struckout the next batter, then a force play ended the at bat.

After a scoreless second inning, Storks added two runs with two outs in the third at bat. With one out, Jurriaan Dijk doubled and Luuk Visser singled. With runners at the corners, a pop-fly accounted for the second out, but hereafter, Brian van der Vlist and Sydney Hoeverts followed with RBI-singles to put Storks ahead 3-0. The team got the bases loaded when Jurian Hansen walked, but three runners were left behind when a flyout ended the at bat.

Storks staged a 3-run rally in the top of the fourth inning. Jurnest Virginie led off with a single, then moved to third base on two consecutive wild pitches. With one out, Jurriaan Dijk and Luuk Visser connected for back-to-back RBI-doubles. That resulted in two more runs and a pitching change, as Jasper Popken took over from Jan-Willem Geerts. He got a flyout, but then gave up a runscoring single to Brian van der Vlist, which made it a 6-0 score in favor of Storks.

That appeared to be a comfortable lead, but then game then turned around from the bottom of the fourth inning on.

Quick Amersfoort left seven runners behind in the first three innings, including four in scoring position, off of starter Twan Naessens. With Storks leading 1-0, Quick got three baserunners in the first inning. Joran Berkhout led off with a walk, but was caught stealing after a successful pick-off moments later. Rachid Engelhardt then singled and Taylor Clemensia walked with two outs, but they were left behind.

In the second inning, still trailing only 1-0, Quick got the bases loaded with no outs, but was unable to score. Alberto Enrique Ostos led off with a single, Gilian Wernet walked and Amar van Zwieten also singled. The team's leading powerhitters are sidelined with injuries, Roger Bernadina, Bryan Engelhardt and Ademar Rifaela. And so, the coaching-staff has to be creative in how to use their players. Today, Gilian Wernet, who is one of the pitchers, was the team's leftfielder. As mentioned, he walked in this at bat. With the bases loaded, Twan Naessens struckout the next two batters, then made the out himself on a comebacker from Rachid Engelhardt, meaning three runners were left behind.

With one out in the third inning, Taylor Clemensia and Emeron Lourens singled for Quick. They also stranded, as a flyout and strikeout ended the at bat.

But while trailing 6-0, the game suddenly started to turn around in the bottom of the fourth, when Quick scored four runs with two outs. Amar van Zwieten led off with his second single in the game, but next batter Denzel Brooks grounded into a double play. With two outs, Joran Berkhout walked and scored the first run on a following double by Rachid Engelhardt. Hereafter, Tijmen Takke walked. A single by Taylor Clemensia and an error on a grounder by Emeron Lourens then accounted for two runs. Next, the bases got loaded when Alberto Enrique Ostos connected for his second basehit in the game. That ended the stay of the mound for Twan Naessens, who was relieved by Diornick Sanchez. He walked Gilian Wernet, which enabled Clemensia to score the fourth run. Three runners were left behind when Sanchez closed with a strikeout.

From the fifth inning on, Storks was kept scoreless in the remainder of the game. In these four at bats, the team got only two baserunners, both in the fifth. With one out in that at bat, Kelvin Knape walked, but he was forced out on a 2-out grounder by Joel Hernandez. In the next three innings, three relievers retired the side.

In the bottom of the fifth, Quick narrowed the deficit to 6-5, scoring an unearned run. Denzel Brooks led off with a walk, then stole second base. When that was followed by a throwing error, he advanced to third base. After next batter Joran Berkhout walked, a double play was turned on a grounder by Rachid Engelhardt, but in this situation Brooks scored.

After Temesh Lourens had retired the side in the top of the sixth, Quick came alongside in the bottom of the sixth. Taylor Clemensia led off with a walk, moved on a single by Emeron Lourens and scored on a single by Alberto Enrique Ostos, which was his third basehit tonight. Lourens tried to advance to third base on the hit by Ostos, but he was eliminated. Ostos later stranded on third base.

In the top of the seventh, it was lefthander Jhan Rifaela who retired the side for Quick. Moments later, Quick scored twice to take the lead for the first time tonight. Denzel Brooks again led off with a walk, but pitcher Diornick Sanchez then struckout the next two batters. The righthander then got the bases loaded when he also walked Tijmen Takke and Taylor Clemensia. Hereafter, Sanchez gave up a 2-run single to Emeron Lourens that put Quick ahead, 8-6. Clemensia and Lourens both advanced on a wild pitch, but the first overran third base and was eliminated, which ended the at bat.

With Quick now leading 8-6, Wendell Floranus became the fifth pitcher for Quick in the top of the eighth. He struckout the side. That also ended the game, as the 10:30 curfew-time had been reached. With that, Floranus earned his third save in four Bottom-4 Pool games.
