Neptunus breaks tie with 6th inning rally vs. Quick Amersfoort
Nederlands

AMERSFOORT (Neth.) - Curaçao Neptunus rallied for four runs in the sixth inning to break a 4-4 tie against Quick Amersfoort and went on to win 10-4 in the opener of their 3-game series on Thursday-evening (August 20).

Neptunus initially led 4-0 halfway the fourth inning, but Quick then scored three runs and came alongside in the fifth.

Tonight's game ended after eight complete innings due to the 10:30 PM curfew-rule. With the win, Neptunus extended its winning streak to twelve games.

Neptunus collected 11 basehits tonight, including three by Coco Johnson and Dwayne Kemp. Johnson scored twice and also batted in two runs. Stijn van der Meer batted in three runs.

Dwayne Kemp stole four bases tonight. With that, he became the first player since May 12, 2013 to do so. On that day, it was Gyenuar Lopez, who stole four bases in a game against ADOLakers. Coincidentally, Lopez then also played for Neptunus, which won the game with an 8-6 score. Back then, Kemp and Lopez were teammates. Also regular players for Neptunus seven years ago and this season are Gianison Boekhoudt, Shaldimar Daantji and Benjamin Dille. But these three players didn't play tonight.

(August 20)

The first two innings remained scoreless, but both teams got some baserunners in these at bats. For Neptunus, Dwayne Kemp singled with two outs in the first inning off of Gilian Wernet, who made his first start of the season. Kemp stole second base, but then was left behind. In the second inning, Quintin De Cuba walked with one out, but was caught stealing. Neptunus-starter Diegomar Markwell retired the side in the first inning. He then hit lead-off hitter Bryan Engelhardt with a pitch in the second inning, but he was forced out on a grounder by Joran Berkhout, who also was forced out moments later.

Joran Berkhout was a surprise player in the starting line-up of Quick Amersfoort. Until two days ago, the outfielder was on the roster of Neptunus for whom he played in four games this season. He walked three times and scored once. But on Tuesday, Berkhout returned to Quick Amersfoort for whom he played in all 42 regular season-games last season. In the transfer-period of last year, he came to Neptunus, but now, both clubs agreed for his return to Amersfoort. Tonight, he made his comeback in the team. He started in rightfield, was 0-for-3 with a walk and scored once.

Neptunus opened the score with two runs in the top of the third inning. Coco Johnson led off with a walk and stole second base with one out. John Polonius then also walked and the two runners advanced on a wild pitch from Gilian Wernet. When another wild pitch followed, Johnson scored and Polonius moved to third base. Hereafter, Wernet also walked Dwayne Kemp. In a double steal-situation, Polonius scored the second run.

Neptunus doubled its lead in the fourth. With one out, Quintin De Cuba and Gregory Muller hit back-to-back doubles, resulting in a run. Muller then scored the next run when Coco Johnson followed with a single.

Quick left a runner behind on first base in the third inning, but then rallied for three runs in the fourth to narrow the deficit to 4-3. Rachid Engelhardt and his brother Bryan Engelhardt opened the at bat with singles. With one out, the bases got loaded when Joran Berkhout walked. The first run was then scored on a sacrifice fly by Jules Cremer and Emeron Lourens followed with a 2-run double.

Quick came alongside in the bottom of the fifth off of Diegomar Markwell. With one out, Ademar Rifaela reached second base on an error, then scored the tying run on a following single by Rachid Engelhardt, who later stranded on third base.

Neptunus broke the 4-4 tie with a 4-run rally in the top of the sixth off of Brian van Laar. The lefthander had taken over the Quick-pitching in the fifth and then retired the side. With one out in the sixth, he got the bases loaded quickly when he walked Gregory Muller, gave up a single to Coco Johnson and also walked pinch-hitter Darryl Collins. All three scored when Stijn van der Meer followed with a baseclearing, 3-run double. Hereafer, the next pitching change was made. Temesh Lourens took over from Van Laar and made his debut in the highest league. He is the brother of Emeron Lourens, the third baseman of Quick. Lourens began with a strikeout, but then gave up a single to Dwayne Kemp that brought in Van der Meer and made it an 8-4 score. Lourens closed with another strikeout, but Neptunus had turned the game its way.

Neptunus added a run in the seventh inning. Dudley Leonora led off with a walk and later scored on an one-out single by Coco Johnson, his third basehit in the game. That was followed by another pitching change, as Jasper Popken took over from Lourens. The latter gave up the tenth Neptunus-run in the eighth inning. John Polonius then led off with a single and advanced on a double by Dwayne Kemp, which also was his third basehit. Polonius scored on a grounder by Dashenko Ricardo. With Kemp on second base, Amar van Zwieten became the fifth pitcher for Quick. He gave up a 2-out single to Quintin De Cuba, but Neptunus left two runners behind.

After Neptunus had rallied for four runs in the top of the sixth to take an 8-4 lead, the team inserted three relievers in the remainder of the game. Misja Harcksen threw the sixth inning. The righthander gave up an one-out single to Jules Cremer, but he stranded on first base. Aaron de Groot then retired the side in the seventh. Kevin Kelly took the mound for Neptunus in the eighth. With one out, he gave up a triple to Tijmen Takke. Kelly then struckout the next two batters. And that also ended the game, as the 10:30 PM curfew had been reached.
