Neptunus closes series vs. Hoofddorp Pioniers with win
Nederlands

ROTTERDAM (Neth.) - Curaçao Neptunus closed its 3-game series against Hoofddorp Pioniers with a 6-1 win on Sunday (September 20).

Neptunus opened on Thursday-evening with a small 3-1 victory.

On Saturday, Hoofddorp Pioniers recorded a 2-0 shutout-win in the second game.

Today, Neptunus broke an 1-1 tie in the second inning, then added a run in each at bat throught the fifth.

Neptunus collected 12 basehits, including three by Dudley Leonora, who batted in two runs. Except for Gianison Boekhoudt, all starting players had at least one basehit.

Hoofddorp Pioniers got six basehits, which were hit by six different players. For the second time this season in 27 games, Victor Draijer was held hitless.

(September 20)

Both teams scored a run in the first inning, but then Neptunus added a run in each following inning through the fifth to take more distance.

Hoofddorp Pioniers opened the score in the top of the first inning off of Kaj Timmermans, who made his first appearance for Neptunus in the Top-4 Pool. The righthanded starter retired the first two batters, but then gave up three consecutive singles. Max Draijer and Joey Eeman singled to put runners on first and second base. Mervin Gario then also singled to bring in Draijer and put Pioniers ahead. Moments later, the inning ended when Eeman was picked off second base by Timmermans.

Neptunus came alongside in the bottom of the first inning off of Lars Broers, who two weeks ago threw a complete game in a 2-1 victory. Broersen walked lead-off hitter Coco Johnson, who stole second base with one out. Next batter Stijn van der Meer walked, then was forced out on a grounder by Dwayne Kemp. Hereafter, Johnson scored the tying run on a single by Dudley Leonora.

Kaj Timmermans retired the side in the second, third and fourth inning. In the meantime, Neptunus scored in these at bats to take some distance.

In the bottom of the second, John Polonius led off with a walk. He advanced on a single by Gregory Muller and a sacrifice bunt by Shaldimar Daantji, then scored on a sacrifice fly by Coco Johnson to put Neptunus ahead, 2-1.

Neptunus added a run in the third, got the bases loaded with no outs, but failed to add more runs. Stijn van der Meer and Dwayne Kemp opened with singles, then Dudley Leonora followed with a runscoring double. Hereafter, the bases got loaded when Gianison Boekhoudt was hit by a pitch. That ended the afternoon for Lars Broersen, who was relieved by Angelo Wicklert. On a grounder by John Polonius, the righthander was supported with a 5-2-3 double play that was started by third baseman (and Head Coach) Mervin Gario. Moments later, Gario caught a line drive from Gregory Muller, which ended the at bat.

In the bottom of the fourth, Neptunus scored its fourth run. Shaldimar Daantji led off with a single and stole second base. With one out, he moved to third base on a single by Benjamin Dille, then scored on a sacrifice fly by Stijn van der Meer.

Now trailing 4-1, Pioniers got a chance to do something back in the top of the fifth. After having retired nine consecutive batters, Kaj Timmermans gave up a lead-off single to Duco Nuijten, but he was forced out on a grounder by Nathan Berkel. Pioniers got another baserunner when Tyler Boersma singled. He played in his first game since August 22. Boersma left the game back then with an injury and was sidelined since then with a fracture in his hand. With runners on first and second base, the inning ended when Timmermans caught a line drive from Daan Kuit, then eliminated Boersma at first base in a double play. Berkel stranded on second base and was the last Pioniers-runner to get into scoring position in this game.

Neptunus scored another run in the bottom of the fifth. Dudley Leonora led off with a single, moved into scoring position on a grounder by Gianision Boekhoudt, then scored on a following single by John Polonius, who later was caught stealing himself at second base.

In its final four innings, Pioniers got only one more baserunner. With Neptunus leading 5-1, Kevin Kelly took over the pitching in the top of the sixth. The righthander retired the side in the two innings he pitched, including three strikeouts.

In the top of the eighth, new pitcher Kevin Bakker got two quick outs. The rookie then gave up a single to pinch-hitter Jaison Gijsbertha, but was left behind on first base and was the last runner for Pioniers in this game.

Neptunus was held scoreless in the sixth and seventh inning, but then added its sixth run in the bottom of the eighth off of new pitcher Nathan Diaby. The righthander walked lead-off hitter John Polonius, then gave up an one-out single to Shaldimar Daantji. The two runners advanced thanks to a passed ball, then Polonius scored on a single by Coco Johnson to raise the lead to 6-1. Hereafter, Neptunus had runners at the corners with only one out, but no more runs were given up by Pioniers. The two runners were left behind, as second baseman Duco Nuijten caught a pop-fly hit by Benjamin Dille, then Stijn van der Meer grounded to rookie short stop Bram Stoovelaar (who had entered the game in the previous inning), who eliminated the batter.

Misja Harcksen closed the game for Neptunus and retired the side in the top of the ninth. Lead-off hitter Victor Draijer grounded out to short stop John Polonius, then Harcksen struckout the next two batters to end the game.
