Nederlands

AMSTERDAM (Neth.) - L&D Amsterdam Pirates had a productive start, but decided the game with a big rally in the sixth inning to win 13-3 in 6½ inning against DSS/Kinheim on Saturday (August 22). With this, Pirates extended its winning streak to eight games.

On Thursday, Amsterdam Pirates opened the 3-game series with a 4-0 shutout.

Today, Pirates scored three runs in the second inning, but led only 4-3 after three innings. The team then rallied for eight runs in the sixth at bat to record a convincing, 10-run difference victory.

Pirates collected 13 basehits, including three by Gilmer Lampe, two of them a double. Lampe also scored three runs and batted in three. Denzel Richardson and Kalian Sams also batted in three runs. Sams hit his league-leading sixth homerun.

It was DSS/Kinheim that opened the score today in the first inning off of Amsterdam-starter Juan Carlos Sulbaran. The righthander gave up a lead-off double to Thomas Bos, who advanced to third base when an outfield-error followed his hit. Hereafter, a brief 3-minute rain-delay followed. When the game resumed, Sulbaran struckout next batter Jochem Koedijk, but then gave up an RBI-double to Jeldwin Orman, who stranded on second base.

The lead was shortlived, as Amsterdam Pirates came alongside in its first at bat off of Glenn Wassink. The righthander also gave up a lead-off double, which was hit by Gilmer Lampe. He moved to third base on a single by Sharlon Schoop, then scored the tying run on an one-out single by Kalian Sams. That brought Schoop (who had stolen second base) to third base, but the DSS/Kinheim-defense ended the at bat with a double play.

Pirates turned a double play in the top of the second inning, then scored three unearned runs in the bottom of the second. Rashid Gerard led off and reached on an error, then Niels van Weert walked. With one out, the bases got loaded when Max Clarijs also walked. Gerard then scored the first run in the inning on a force play-grounder by Gilmer Lampe. With two outs, Van Weert and Lampe (who stole second base) both scored on a single by Sharlon Schoop to put Pirates ahead, 4-1.

DSS/Kinheim narrowed the deficit to 4-3 by scoring twice in the top of the third. Bram Blokker led off with a double and then scored when next batter Thomas Bos singled. Bos was forced out on a grounder by Jochem Koedijk, who later respectively advanced and scored on singles by Jeldwin Orman and Kevin Nieveld. DSS/Kinheim left two runners behind.

In the remainder of the game, DSS/Kinheim got only one more runner in scoring position. That was done in the fourth. Wesley van Hemert led off with a single and moved on a sacrifice bunt by Marcel Tolenaars. Next batter Bram Blokker was hit by a pitch, but two flyouts followed.

Pirates scored another run in the bottom of the fourth. With two outs, Max Clarijs singled and scored when Gilmer Lampe followed with his second double in the game.

The home-team then decided the game with an 8-run rally off of three pitchers in the bottom of the sixth in which thirteen batters stepped up to the plate. Glenn Wassink got the bases loaded quickly when he hit Rashid Gerard and gave up singles to Niels van Weert and Jair van Borkulo. A sacrifice fly by Max Clarijs accounted for the first run in the inning, a single by Gilmer Lampe for the second. That led to the first pitching change in this inning. Moreno Vork took over, but he also ran into problems. First, Van Borkulo and Lampe moved on a passed ball, then Vork got the bases got loaded when he walked Sharlon Schoop. Hereafter, the righthander gave up a 3-run, baseclearing double to Denzel Richardson, which was followed by a 2-run homerun by Kalian Sams. After a flyout resulted in the second out, pinch-hitter Raydley Legito and Niels van Weert both walked. The eighth run in this rally was then scored when Jair van Borkulo followed with his second single in this inning. With Pirates now leading 13-3 and runners at the corners, a new pitching change was made. Bas Timmer took over. He threw only one pitch, as batter Max Clarijs opted to hit on the first pitch he saw. But that resulted in an inning-ending flyout.

Tom de Blok pitched the seventh inning for Amsterdam Pirates. The righthander retired the side and that also ended the game via the mercy-rule.
