Twins Oosterhout records big win in season-opener vs. Storks
Nederlands

AMSTERDAM (Neth.) - Twins Oosterhout opened the 2020 big league-season with a comfortable 12-4 win against Silicon Storks.

The game, a home-game for Storks, was played at the site of L&D Amsterdam Pirates in Amsterdam. There is no light-installation at the home-site of Storks in The Hague and therefore, the team plays its home-games in the evening at the site of Curaçao Neptunus in Rotterdam. However, as Neptunus also had a home-game schedule tonight, Storks had to play elsewhere. Initially, it was agreed that the game was to be played at the site of UVV in Vleuten. But that was changed to Amsterdam in the last few days.

Twins outhit Storks 15-6 and led 1-0 after three innings, then added eleven runs in the next five innings. Rookie Tyriq Kemp was 5-for-5, scored three runs, walked once, stole a base and batted in a run in his first game for his new team. Last year, he made his big league-debut playing for Curaçao Neptunus, where his older brother Dwayne Kemp plays. Last season, the younger Kemp was 4-for-22, playing in nine games. As he didn't play in the required 15 games last year, it means he still has a rookie-status for this season.

Kemp became the first player since April 12, 2008 to hit five basehits in an opening game. Back then, it was Martijn Meeuwis (Neptunus), who was 5-for-5.

(July 23)

Twins scored its first run in the top of the second inning off of starter Twan Naessens. With one out, Ruendrick Piternella walked, moved to third base on a single by Dave Janssen and scored on a sacrifice fly by Brian Biezen.

Twins doubled its lead in the fourth. This time, Piternella led off with a walk, advanced on an error and scored when Jerzy van Gool delivered a sac-fly.

Two more runs were added in the fifth. Tyriq Kemp, who had singled in his first two at bats in the first and third inning, added another single and moved into scoring position via a sacrifice bunt by Rayshelon Carolina, who made his big league-debut. After Jason Halman walked, Shurman Marlin followed with a runscoring single. Next batter Ruendrick Piternella then received his third walk in the game, which led to a pitching change. American righthander William Sowers took over, but two outs, a run was scored when Brian Biezen also walked.

Japanese righthander Sora Sakashita made his big league-debut on the mound for Twins. He had an impressive start, as he retired the first twelve batters he faced, striking out four of them. In the fifth inning, Sakashita allowed his first baserunner, as he gave up a lead-off triple to Ibrahin Redan. Next batter Rubinet Koko was hit by a pitch, but then Redan scored on a single by Brian van der Vlist. Koko last played in the highest league in 2011 for Sparta-Feyenoord. Sakashita struckout two of the next three batters and Storks left runners behind on second and third base.

Twins answered with two runs in the sixth. With one out, Tyriq Kemp and Rayshelon Carolina singled. With two outs, both scored on a double by Shurman Marlin to increase the lead to 6-1.

In the bottom of the sixth, Storks its second run. Joel Hernandez led off with a single and stole second base. After Sakashita struckout his seventh batter, he walked Luuk Visser, which ended his evening on the mound. Stefan Iannelli took over and got a flyout from Ibrahin Redan, but when an error followed, Hernandez was able to score.

With a 6-2 lead, Twins more or less decided the game with a 4-run rally with two outs in the top of the seventh. Storks-reliever William Sowers got two quick outs, but then gave up a single to Jerzy van Gool and a double to Mick Vos. That was followed by an outfield-error, which enabled Van Gool to score. The bases then got loaded when Sowers walked Tyriq Kemp and hit Rayshelon Carolina with a pitch. Jason Halman then connected well and delivered a 2-run single. A wild pitch enabled Carolina to score and that lifted the lead to 10-2.

The scoring wasn't over yet for Twins, which added two more runs in the eighth. Again with two outs. Pinch-hitter Railison Bentura (who made his debut) was at first base via a force play, then scored on a double by Mick Vos. The latter scored the twelfth run for Twins when Tyriq Kemp recorded hit fifth basehit and reached base for the sixth time.

Now trailing 12-2, Storks avoided a 10-run difference mercy-rule loss by scoring two runs in the bottom of the eighth. In this inning, Pastor Enrique Martínez Chavez was the third Twins-pitcher. He took over from rookie Finn Kops, who had thrown the seventh inning, was supported with a double play and closed with a strikeout. In the eighth, Martínez saw lead-off hitter and pinch-hitter Ronald Bloem reach on an error, then gave up a single to Stephen Henson. With one out, Bloem, who made his debut, scored when an error was made on a possible double play-grounder by Ibrahin Redan. With two outs, Henson scored on a single by Lejeune Francisca, who was 2-for-2 in his first big league-game since 2015 when he played for The Hawks. Before that, he played in the highest league for Kinheim in 2005.

As the score was now 12-4, the ninth inning needed to be played, but remained scoreless.
