HAARLEM (Neth.) - L&D Amsterdam Pirates broke an 1-1 tie and scored four runs in the middle innings to win 5-1 in the series-finale against DSS/Kinheim on Sunday (August 23). With the win, Pirates completed a 3-game sweep and won its ninth game in a row. The team also became the second to secure a spot in the Top-4 Pool. On Saturday, league-leader Curaçao Neptunus was the first to officially qualify.

On Thursday, Amsterdam Pirates opened the 3-game series with a 4-0 shutout. On Saturday, Pirates scored three runs in the second inning, but led only 4-3 after three innings. The team then rallied for eight runs in the sixth at bat to record a convincing, 10-run difference victory.

Today, Pirates scored a run in the first inning, then DSS/Kinheim came alongside in the third. The visitors then scored twice in both the fifth and sixth inning and held the home-team scoreless in the remainder of the game.

Amsterdam Pirates collected eight basehits, including three by Denzel Richardson, who also homered.

DSS/Kinheim got seven basehits, including two by Koen Halderman and rookie Marcel Tolenaars.

(August 23)

Amsterdam Pirates opened the score right away in the top of the first inning, but then had to wait until the fifth inning to take more distance.

In the first inning, Gilmer Lampe led off for Pirates with a basehit, but next batter Sharlon Schoop grounded into a double play. With two outs, Denzel Richardson connected well off of starter Jelle Bing and hit his third homerun of the season.

In the next two innings, Pirates again got into scoring position, but failed to score. In the second inning, Kenny Berkenbosch led off with a single, but was forced out on an one-out grounder by Niels van Weert. Moments later, Van Weert stole second base and moved on a following throwing error, then Jair van Borkulo walked. But the two runners stranded on first and third base.

In the third, Sharlon Schoop walked with one out and Denzel Richardson walked with two outs. The inning ended with a comeback-grounder to Jelle Bing, who initially was to be the starting pitcher in the opener on Thursday. However, DSS/Kinheim Head Coach Michael Crouwel changed his rotation and switched his Game 1 and 3 starters.

DSS/Kinheim also got on base right away off of Pirates-starter Naut Kragt. The righthander walked lead-off hitter Thomas Bos in the bottom of the first inning. He moved to third base on two following grounders, but Kragt then closed with a strikeout.

DSS/Kinheim also got its first batter on base in the second at bat when former Pirate Aidan Finnegan led off with a single. With two outs, Marcel Tolenaars hit his first big league-basehit. With runners on first and second base, Kragt again closed with a strikeout.

Kragt then began the third inning with two strikeouts, but then gave up the tying run moments later. With two outs, Jeldwin Orman singled and stole second base. He then scored when third baseman Rashid Gerard made a throwing error on a grounder by Kevin Nieveld.

Both teams left runners behind in scoring postion in the fourth inning. Pirates got runners on first and second base with two outs. For DSS/Kinheim, Koen Halderman led off with a single. He was on third base with two outs, but for the third time, Naut Kragt closed with a strikeout with a runner in scoring position.

Amsterdam Pirates broke the 1-1 tie in the top of the fifth by scoring two runs. Sharlon Schoop led off with a walk, stole second base and moved to third base on a single by Denzel Richardson, who then also stole second base. Hereafter, the bases got loaded when Kalian Sams walked. A run was scored when next batter Kenny Berkenbosch also walked. That ended the afternoon for Jelle Bing, who was replaced by Al Morales Gomes. The veteran righthander got an infield-fly, but saw Pirates another run via a sacrifice fly by Niels van Weert.

Pirates again scored twice in the sixth at bat. Roelie Henrique led off with a single, advanced on a sacrifice bunt by Gilmer Lampe and scored when Sharlon Schoop followed with a single. Schoop later moved on a single by Denzel Richardson and scored on a sacrifice fly by Kalian Sams, which lifted the lead to 5-1.

In the next three innings, Pirates didn't get another runner in scoring position. The team was retired in order by Rick Timmermans in the seventh inning. Robyn Clara threw the final two innings for DSS/Kinheim. He got a runner with two outs in the eighth, but he stranded on first base. In the ninth, Kalian Sams led off for the Amsterdam-squad with a single, but was eliminated in a double play.

After Naut Kragt had retired the side in the bottom of the fifth inning, three relievers completed the game, but they all got baserunners.

In the sixth, Donny Breek began with two strikeouts. He then gave up a double to Koen Halderman and walked Jochem Koedijk, but closed with a strikeout.

In the seventh, Matz Schutte took over. He also got baserunners with two outs when Bram Blokker singled and Jeldwin Orman reached on an error. Schutte also closed with a strikeout.

In the eighth, Schutte walked lead-off hitter Aidan Finnegan and was relieved by Mike Groen. He retired the next two batters, then gave up a single to Marcel Tolenaars, but a flyout ended the at bat. Groen retired the side in the ninth to end the game.
