Foul ball destroys light and halts opener HCAW vs. Neptunus
Nederlands

BUSSUM (Neth.) - The opener of the 3-game series between HCAW and Curaçao Neptunus was suspended and then halted in the second inning on Thursday-evening (September 24) after a foul ball had destroyed a lamp in a light-tower.

The remainder of the game will be played on Friday-evening. When it is not possible to play in Bussum, the game will resume at the site of opponent Neptunus in Rotterdam.

This means that HCAW has to play another make-up game. Last week, the 3-game series of HCAW against L&D Amsterdam Pirates was postponed due to some cases of the coronavirus in the Amsterdam-team. That series will be made up on October 1-4.

Also today, Neptunus-outfielder Darryl Collins traveled to the USA. Collins, who was to play professionally this season in the organization of Kansas City Royals, will participate in the Instructional League in the coming weeks. Coming Sunday, pitcher Jiorgeny Casimiri also will leave the team to participate in Instructional League. This season, Casimiri was to play in a Minor League-team in the organization of Toronto Blue Jays.

When the game went underway tonight under some drizzling conditions, both starting pitchers retired the side in the first inning.

HCAW-righthander Luuk ter Beek got three grounders, Neptunus-lefthander Diegomar Markwell started with a strikeout, then also got two grounders.

In the top of the second inning, Neptunus got two baserunners. Gianison Boekhoudt led off with a walk, then advanced to third base on a single by Dudley Leonora. With runners at the corners, Dashenko Ricardo was the next batter. With an 2-0 count, Ricardo fouled off a ball that hit one of the lamps in the light-tower that is located between the backstop and the first base home dug-out. The ball destroyed the lamp and hot and fiery debris fell on the artificial grass near the on-deck area of HCAW. Luckily, no one was standing there, as the visiting team was batting at the moment.

The ball hitting the lamp and the falling debris resembled the iconic scene from the movie The Natural (1984) somewhat. In that movie, Roy Hobbs (played by Robert Redford) hits a towering homerun that hits a lamp in the outfield. Also starring in that movie are Robert Duvall,Glenn Close and Kim Basinger.

While the light-installation stayed on, the game was halted to remove the debris. At that moment, only 19 minutes were played. However, it soon became clear that it was not possible to find and remove all the debris and pieces of glass from the lamp. Besides that, as it was drizzling, it was stated that the light-tower could become unsafe now that wires were exposed to the rain. And so, at 8:15 PM, the umpiring crew decided to definitively halt the game.

To be continued.
