Hoofddorp Pioniers records comfortable win against DSS/Kinheim
Nederlands

HOOFDDORP (Neth.) - Hoofddorp Pioniers won 10-6 on Saturday (July 25) against DSS/Kinheim in its second game of the shortened 2020 season. On Thursday-evening, DSS/Kinheim made a surprise debut in the big league by recording a 4-3 walk-off win.

Today, Pioniers rallied for five runs in the fifth inning and had a comfortable 8-0 lead after six innings. Pioniers collected twelve basehits, including two homeruns. DSS/Kinheim cut the deficit in half in the seventh when Tommy van de Sanden hit a grand slam homerun. But the team was unable to turn the game around.

Van de Sanden's grand slam was the second in the big league in three days. On Thursday, Kalian Sams of L&D Amsterdam Pirates hit the first grand slam of the season.

Today's game was played on Field #2 of the Pioniers Complex in Hoofddorp, as the main-field is currently under renovation.

(July 25)

Pioniers-starter Lars Huijer had a fine outing and threw five solid innings. The righthander struckout eight batters and gave up no hits. As he had reached his pitch-count total, Huijer was relieved in the sixth inning. While not giving up a basehit, Huijer got five baserunners, three of them on a walk, a fourth batter was hit by a pitch and the fifth reached on a fielder's choice.

Pioniers opened the score with one run in the bottom of the first inning off of DSS/Kinheim-starter Glenn Wassink. It was Raul Jacobs, who accounted for the run, as he led off the at bat with a homerun, which was his first in the big league.

In the fourth inning, Pioniers got into scoring position again. With two outs, Victor Draijer reached on an error, then Joey Eeman singled to put runners at the corners. A force play ended the at bat.

DSS/Kinheim got its first runner in scoring position in the second inning. With one out, Aidan Finnegan was hit by a pitch, then Koen Halderman walked. However, a force out and groundout followed and so, Finnegan stranded at third base.

After having retired nine batters in a row (five strikeouts), Huijer walked Nick Hofer with two outs in the fifth. Hofer, who is the son of former big league-pitcher Mike Hofer and the grandson of former big league-Coach Louis Hofer, stole second base, but then was left behind, as Huijer followed with another strikeout.

Pioniers then took more distance in the bottom of the fifth by scoring five runs off of Glenn Wassink. With one out, Jorrit Penseel walked and Raul Jacobs singled. After Dylan Farley took over as pinch-runner at second base for Penseel, the bases got loaded when debuting Nathan Berkel recorded his first big league-basehit. Max Draijer followed with a runscoring single. Next, Draijer was forced out on a grounder by Tyler Boersma, but Jacobs scored. When a throwing error followed, Berkel also scored. Moments later, Boersma scored the next run on a triple by Victor Draijer, who then scored the fifth run in the inning on a double by Joey Eeman. With Pioniers now leading 6-0, Wassink was relieved by Moreno Vork, who got an inning-ending groundout.

In the top of the sixth, another Lars took the mound for Pioniers, as Lars Broersen took over. He got two baserunners, but they were left behind.

In its sixth at bat, Poniers added two more runs off of Vork. Nolan Beugeling led off with a walk, then Jaison Gijsbertha followed with his first big league-homerun. Gijsbertha had just entered the game in the top of the sixth as the new catcher for Pioniers.

In the top of the seventh, DSS/Kinheim narrowed the deficit to 8-4. Lars Broersen got two quick outs, but then got the bases loaded when he gave up singles to pinch-hitters Daan Terstall and Bram Blokker (the latter in his first big league at bat), then walked Jochem Koedijk. With the bases loaded, Tommy van de Sanden connected well and hit a grand slam homerun! Broersen then hit next batter Tino van Erk with a pitch. Hereafter, Broersen was relieved by Daniël Vos, who got an inning-ending flyout.

Pioniers answered with two runs in the bottom of the seventh. For DSS/Kinheim, veteran Al Morales Gomes took the mound in his first big league-appearance since 2011. Back then, he pitched in his third season for Amsterdam Pirates after having made his debut in the big league in 2008 while pitching for RCH. Last season, Morales was the Pitching Coach of Kinheim and also took the mound himself regularly. Today, the 42-year old righthanded Mexican-born Morales gave up two unearned runs. Lead-off hitter Victor Draijer reached on an error, then scored on a double by next batter Joey Eeman. With two outs, Eeman scored on a double by Daan Kuit, who was the third catcher today for Pioniers.

Morales threw only one inning, as debuting Calvin Andringa pitched the eighth for DSS/Kinheim. With one out, he gave up a single to American pinch-hitter Nick DiBenedetto in what was his first big league-at bat. DiBenedetto joined the team shortly before the start of the season. He played professionally in 2017 (Rookie League Baltimore Orioles) and 2018 (Independent League). Last season, DiBenedetto (who is an infielder) played for Hamburg Stealers in Germany.

Trailing 10-4, DSS/Kinheim added two more runs in the ninth off of new pitcher Yassir Lachkar. With one out, Jochem Koedijk singled and with two outs, Tino van Erk doubled, then next batter Kevin Nieveld delivered a 2-run double. A flyout then ended the game.
