Amsterdam Pirates trails early, but wins vs. Hoofddorp Pioniers
Nederlands

AMSTERDAM (Neth.) - L&D Amsterdam Pirates won 6-3 against Hoofddorp Pioniers on Sunday-afternoon (September 27) in what was the second meeting in this series between the two teams.

Amsterdam Pirates returned to action on Thursday-evening and then recorded a convincing 13-1 win in 6½ inning.

On Saturday, the second game, which was to be played in Hoofddorp, rained out. That game will be made up on Monday-evening.

Today, the reigning champion initially trailed briefly, but took a 2-1 lead in the third inning. From then on, more runs were added in the next at bats.

Pirates collected eight basehits, including two by Roelie Henrique, who was the lone player with a multi-hit game. Kenny Berkenbosch homered.

Pioniers got six basehits. For the Hoofddorp-team, it was Tyler Boersma who was the lone player with more than one basehit. He singled and doubled and also scored twice.

Hoofddorp Pioniers opened the score in the top of the second inning off of Pirates-starter Jim Ploeger. Due to the five games that were postponed in the past weeks, Ploeger today made his first appearance in the Top-4 Pool. The lefthander gave up a lead-off single to Mark Smit in the top of the first inning, but then short stop Sharlon Schoop turned a double play on a following grounder by Victor Draijer.

Ploeger initially assigned to start Game 2 on Saturday, but that rained out. Head Coach Michael Duursma decided to move his start to today. That also means that today's scheduled starter (for Game 3) Juan Carlos Sulbaran will be the starter in the make-up game on Monday. Pioniers stuck with its rotation and started today with Lars Broersen, who already was the announced starter for Game 3. On Saturday, Chris Pfau was to start and so, he now will be the starter on Monday.

In the second inning, Pioniers scored an unearned run and left three runners behind. Tyler Boersma led off with a double, then Joey Eeman reached on an error. The two moved on a sacrifice bunt by Duco Nuijten and Jim Ploeger followed with a strikeout, which would have been the third out. But there were two outs now and Pioniers had runners on second and third base. The bases were loaded when Ploeger walked Jorrit Penseel, then Boersma scored when next batter Daan Kuit also walked. Ploeger ended the threat by closing with a strikeout.

In the third inning, Victor Draijer led off for Pioniers with a single, but he was left behind on second base.

Amsterdam Pirates left a runner behind in scoring position in its first at bat off of starter Lars Broersen. Roelie Henrique led off with a single, stole second base and advanced on a flyout, but stranded on third base.

Trailing 1-0, Pirates was retired in order in the second inning, but then scored twice in the third at bat. The bases got loaded quickly. Broersen walked Rashid Gerard and Max Clarijs, then Roelie Henrique followed with a bunt-single. Hereafter, Gerard scored the tying run when Gilmer Lampe grounded into a double play. Clarijs scored the go-ahead run when Sharlon Schoop delivered a single. Pirates then got the bases loaded again when Kalian Sams walked and Denzel Richardson singled. It appeared that another run was in the making, as next batter Kenny Berkenbosch got to a 3-1 count. But on the next pitch, he hit a foul pop-fly that was caught by catcher Daan Kuit. That ended the at bat and so, this time, it was Pirates that left three runners behind.

Amsterdam added another run in the fourth inning off of new pitcher Nathan Diaby. He walked lead-off hitter Delano Selassa, who moved into scoring position via a wild pitch. Selassa advanced to third base on a single by Rashid Gerard, then scored when Max Clarijs grounded into a double play.

Pirates scored again in the fifth. For the third inning in a row, it was the lead-off batter that scored for the home-team. In the fifth, Gilmer Lampe led off with a walk, then stole second base. With one out, he also stole third base, then scored on a single by Kalian Sams. Moments later, Sams also stole second base, but the inning then ended with an unassisted double play. Denzel Richardson hit a line drive, which was caught by second baseman Duco Nuijten. As Sams left on contact, Nuijten was able to complete the double play himself.

Trailing 4-1, Pioniers narrowed the deficit to 4-3 by scoring two runs in the top of the sixth. Like the run scored in the second, these runs were also unearned, as an error influenced the at bat. Max Draijer and Tyler Boersma led off with singles. Next batter Joey Eeman tried to move the two runners with a sacrifice bunt, but that almost ended in a force out on third base. However, pitcher Jim Ploeger made a throwing error and so, Draijer was not eliminated and instead scored a run. Boersma advanced to third base and Eeman ended up on second base with a fielder's choice. Hereafter, Boersma scored on a grounder by Duco Nuijten. With Eeman on second base, a pop-fly accounted for the second out, but was also followed by a pitching-change. Mike Groen took over and he got an inning-ending grounder from Jorrit Penseel.

Amsterdam Pirates immediately reacted with two runs of its own. First, Kenny Berkenbosch led off with a homerun to become the fourth lead-off hitter in a row to score. Next batter Delano Selassa walked, moved on a wild pitch and scored on an one-out double by Max Clarijs. Hereafter, Angelo Wicklert became the new pitcher for Pioniers. He enabled Clarijs to move to third base on a wild pitch, but then retired the next two batters.

Pirates got another scoring opportunity in the seventh, as it got the bases loaded with one out. Sharlon Schoop and Kalian Sams both walked and with one out, Kenny Berkenbosch was hit by a pitch. The inning ended when Delano Selassa grounded into a 5-2-3 double play. The team then was retired in order in the eighth.

After successfully closing the sixth inning, Mike Groen retired the side in the seventh and eighth inning, striking out three batters.

With a 6-3 lead, Shairon Martis closed the game for Pirates in the ninth inning. He gave up a lead-off single to Duco Nuijten, but he was forced out on a grounder by Reangelo Willems. The inning and the game ended when Jorrit Penseel grounded into a 4-6-3 double play. And with that, Martis earned a save.
