Chadwick Tromp recalled to join Major League-team of San Francisco Giants
Nederlands

SAN FRANCISCO, California (USA) - Aruban-born catcher Chadwick Tromp is in the Major League. San Francisco Giants selected the contract of Tromp and added him to its current 30-man Major League-roster on Tuesday (July 28). He might be the starting catcher of San Francisco on Wednesday or Thursday when the team plays at home against San Diego Padres.

When he was recalled on Tuesday, Tromp (who will wear uniform number 14) was one of two catchers on the Giants-roster. The other catcher is Tyler Heineman, who played in five games. Rob Brantley, who played in one game, was designated for assignment to make room on the roster for Tromp. Buster Posey, the regular catcher of San Francisco, is not on the roster. He is on the restricted list, as he opted not to play this season, due to the coronavirus.

The 25-year old Chadwick Tromp plays professionally since 2013 after having been signed by Cincinnati Reds on May 24 of that year. In 2013, he made his debut playing in nine games in the Rookie League-team of Cincinnati. He batted 4-for-24, scored twice and batted in two runs.

Since 2013, Tromp has always played in the organization of Cincinnati. He promoted to Single-A during the 2014 season, then played in one game at the Triple-A level in 2015. After having played primarily in Single-A in 2015 and 2016, he split time between Single-A and Double-A during the 2017 season. Tromp then promoted in 2018 when he played in 25 games in Double-A and in 53 games in Triple-A. Last season, he played in Triple-A, but also some in Rookie League to recover from an injury.

In seven Minor League-seasons, Tromp batted .257 (281-for-1093) and showed he has some offensive power, as he belted 62 doubles, two triples and 23 homeruns. In 326 games, Tromp scored 124 runs and batted in 155.

Early November last year, Tromp became a Free Agent, then signed with San Francisco on January 6 of this year. He was invited for Spring Training as a non-roster player, then was assigned to Sacramento River Cats (Triple-A) the next day. In Spring Training, Tromp played in nine games and batted 3-for-13 (.231). Earlier, Tromp played in Spring Training for Cincinnati in 2016 (one game) and 2018 (six games).

After it was announced that the Major League-season was to open on July 23, Tromp again was invited to be with the Giants during Summer Camp, the second version of Spring Training, on July 4. Shortly before the season went underway, Tromp has some tightness in a hamstring and was assigned to group of players at the Giants Alternate Training Site, which is located in Sacramento (near San Francisco). As the entire Minor League-season has been cancelled for this year, a designated group of players remain in practice at this site to be eligible for addition to the Major League-team. During the preparations for the 60-game season, the team played several intrasquad-games in which Tromp hit three homeruns and also made a good impression as a catcher.

With the addition of Chadwick Tromp, there are now eight players in the Major League with a Dutch passport. The others being Ozzie Albies (Atlanta Braves), Xander Bogaerts (Boston Red Sox), Didi Gregorius (Philadelphia Phillies), Carter Kieboom (Washington Nationals), Kenley Jansen (Los Angeles Dodgers), Jurickson Profar (San Diego Padres), Jonathan Schoop (Detroit Tigers) and Andrelton Simmons (Los Angeles Angels).

Tromp is the second player from Aruba currently on a Major League-roster, the other being Bogaerts. Albies, Gregorius (born in Amsterdam, Netherlands), Jansen, Schoop and Simmons are all from Curaçao, while Kieboom is American-born, but has a Dutch father.

On Tuesday, it was also announced that Simmons was placed on the injured list with a left ankle sprain. Schoop homered on Tuesday for Detroit in a 4-3 win against Kansas City Royals. Bogaerts homered for Boston on Monday in a 7-4 loss against New York Mets, while Albies homered for Atlanta on Sunday in a 14-1 win against the Mets. Gregorius already homered twice for his new team Philadelphia.

In 2016, Tromp made his debut in the Netherlands National Baseball Team. After making his debut in an exhibition game against France, Tromp played in three games for the Orange-squad during the European Championship in Hoofddorp (Netherlands). During the Championship, he played in his first game against Russia and then homered in his first at bat.

In 2017, Tromp was a member of the preliminary roster of the Netherlands Team for the World Baseball Classic, playing for the squad during preparations in Arizona (USA) and South Korea. Tromp was not on the final roster for the WBC, but stayed with the team as a bullpen-catcher. The Netherlands qualified for the Semi-Final, which was played in Los Angeles (USA). After completion of the Second Round, a transfer was made due to an injury to short stop Didi Gregorius. He was replaced on the active WBC-roster by Tromp, but he didn't play in the Semi-Final against Puerto Rico.
