FORT MYERS / JUPITER, Florida (USA) - On Saturday (February 29), a total of seventeen games was played in Major League Spring Training. Eight of them in the Grapefruit League (Florida), eight in the Cactus League (Arizona) and one in Nevada, as Oakland Athletics and Cleveland Indians played both with a split-squad in Las Vegas (Nevada).

In Saturday's games, only two players from the Netherlands came into action. Carter Kieboom (Washington Nationals) and Zander Wiel (Minnesota Twins), both American-born, were in the starting line-ups.

Of the twelve players with a Dutch background in Spring Training so far, eleven have played. The lone player who has not played yet is Xander Bogaerts (Boston Red Sox), who is recovering from a minor injury.

At Roger Dean Chevrolet Stadium in Jupiter, Washington Nationals visited St. Louis Cardinals and lost 6-3.

Carter Kieboom was the starting third baseman for Washington and was 0-for-1, but he walked twice and scored a run.

In the top of the second inning, Kieboom led off with a walk, but then was eliminated in a double play. Moments later, St. Louis opened the score on a lead-off homerun by Paul DeJong in the bottom of the second inning.

In the fourth inning, Kieboom struckout. In the next at bat, St. Louis took some more distance by scoring two runs.

Trailing 3-0, Washington came alongside in the top of the seventh and that started with Kieboom. Facing new pitcher Jake Woodford, Kieboom led off with a walk, then scored when next batter Luis García homered. Hereafter, Jake Noll doubled and scored the tying run on a 2-out single by Brandon Snyder.

In the bottom of the seventh inning, Jacob Wilson replaced Kieboom as new third baseman. In that at bat, St. Louis re-took the lead by scoring three runs.

At Hammond Stadium at CenturyLink Sports Complex in Fort Myers, Minnesota Twins played at home against Pittsburgh Pirates and lost 2-0.

Zander Wiel started at first base for Minnesota and was 0-for-2.

Wiel led off the bottom of the third inning and the flied out. With two outs in that at bat, Minnesota got the bases loaded, but after a pitching change, the inning ended with a strikeout.

Wiel again was the lead-off hitter in the fifth inning and this time, he grounded out. He was then replaced in the top of the sixth by new first baseman Caleb Hamilton.

Pittsburgh scored its runs in the sixth and ninth inning.
