HCAW comes from behind again to win second game vs. Amsterdam Pirates
Nederlands

AMSTERDAM (Neth.) - HCAW turned a 2-1 deficit into a small 3-2 win on Saturday (August 29) to also win the second game of their 3-game series against L&D Amsterdam Pirates. Because of today's loss, combined with the win by Curaçao Neptunus, Amsterdam Pirates was eliminated for first place. With its win, Neptunus will finish the regular season in first place.

On Thursday, HCAW trailed after six innings in the opener, but then rallied in the seventh inning to win 5-3. For HCAW, this was its fifth consecutive win. It marks the first time this season that Pirates lost two games in a row.

Today, Amsterdam Pirates broke an 1-1 tie in the fifth inning, but HCAW came alongside in the sixth. The Bussum-team then scored what would be the decisive run in the eighth inning.

HCAW collected nine basehits, including two doubles by Rodney Daal, who on Thursday delivered a game-winning, 3-run homerun. Arthur Bonevacia also had two basehits. The powerful offense of Amsterdam Pirates was limited to only four basehits, one of them a homerun by Kalian Sams.

(August 29)

HCAW got into scoring position for the first time in the top of the first inning off of starter Juan Carlos Sulbaran. With one out, the righthander hit Berend Ruben with a pitch. He moved to second base on a 2-out single by Arthur Bonevacia, but a force play ended the at bat.

HCAW then opened the score in the second inning. With Christopher Ge (fielder's choice) on first base, Bob van der Meer singled. The latter was forced on a grounder by Leandro Anasagasti, but Ge managed to score in this situation.

HCAW-starter Dennis Burgersdijk retired the side (two strikeouts) in the bottom of the first inning. The righthander then gave up a lead-off homerun to Kalian Sams in the second, which tied the score. For Sams, this was his league-leading seventh homerun.

Burgersdijk was supported with a double play in the third inning, then got a runner in scoring position in the fourth. With one out, Rashid Gerard reached on an error, but was forced out on a grounder by Kalian Sams. During a pick-off attempt, Sams stole second base, but then was left behind.

After Pirates had tied the score in the second inning, HCAW got its first batter on base in the top of the third. Berend Ruben led off with a single and stole second base, but Juan Carlos Sulbaran retired the next eight consecutive batters.

In the bottom of the fifth, Pirates took the lead, but also left two runners behind. With one out, Jair van Borkulo and Max Clarijs singled to put runners at the corners. Van Borkulo then scored when a grounder by Raydley Legito ended in an error. Moments later, Legito was forced out on a grounder by Gilmer Lampe. But Pirates then left runners behind on first and third base when Sharlon Schoop's foul pop-fly was caught.

The Amsterdam-lead was shortlived, as HCAW scored the tying run in the sixth. With one out, Rodney Daal doubled and he scored on a 2-out single by Christopher Ge.

After HCAW was retired in order in the seventh, the team took the lead for the first time in the eighth inning. Patrick Bok led off with a double, which led to a pitching change. Former Major Leaguer Shairon Martis took over from Sulbaran, but he was greeted with a single by Arhur Bonevacia. Next, it again was Rodney Daal, who delivered the decisive hit. Last Thursday, his 3-run homerun resulted in the 5-3 win for HCAW. Now, he hit his second double in the game. With that, he brought in Pascal Zegwaard (Bok's pinch-runner) to give HCAW a 3-2 lead, which also would become the final score. HCAW got the bases loaded when Martis walked Christopher Ge with one out, but failed to take more distance. Bob van der Meer fouled out and Ge was forced out to end the inning.

Pirates got two more scoring opportunities after the fifth inning. After HCAW had tied the score in the sixth, Delano Selassa singled for Pirates with two outs in the bottom of the sixth. He moved into scoring position on a wild pitch, but was left behind on second base. With a 2-1 lead, Jair van Borkulo led off with a walk in the seventh. He advanced on a sacrifice bunt and a grounder, but stranded on third base.

Pirates was retired in order in the eighth by Dennis Burgersdijk. In the ninth, the team also was retired in order by closer Arij Fransen, who earned his third save of the season.
