But as everyone knows, the baseball-season has not yet started, due to the measures taken to prevent the spread of coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. (© Photo: Henk Seppen) From March 12 on, the Government of the Netherlands regularly announced several measures due to the coronavirus. The most recent announcement was made on Tuesday, April 21 when earlier measures were extended through May 19, while gatherings and events are prohibited though September 1. Earlier, the Royal Netherlands Baseball and Softball Assocation (KNBSB) announced that it will give teams a three-week preparation period when it is allowed to return to the fields and open the season. With that, the KNBSB announced on Wednesday (April 29) that it had annulled all regular season-games through June 9. The Dutch big league-season was initially scheduled to open on Thursday, April 23. But on March 2, the WBSC Final Qualifier (April 1-5), to be played in Taiwan, was postponed to June 17-21. The winner of this event, in which the Netherlands Baseball Team participates, qualifies for the Olympic Games in Japan. With that, the season in the Dutch big league needed some adjustments. A 3-game series scheduled for the half of August was moved up front, meaning the season was to open on Thursday, April 16. However, on March 24, the Olympic Games were postponed to 2021 and shortly thereafter, the Final Olympic Qualifier also was cancelled and will be re-scheduled. With the inclusion of the games that were annulled on Wednesday, a total of 370 regular season-games have now been scrubbed in the highest leagues of Dutch baseball and softball (93 Baseball Big League, 120 Baseball Overgangsklasse, 64 Softball Golden League, 56 Softball Silver League, 37 Men Softball First Division). Hundreds more have been cancelled in lower divisions. Today was a cloudy day, but is cleared temporarily in the afternoon. However, in the evening, from 9 PM on, there was some rain on most locations. That came after weeks of very favorable weather conditions throughout what would have been the exhibition season and the first weeks of the regular season. While the teams probably could have been able to play the required five innings to make a game valid, tonight we might have seen the first rain-delays of the season. Or maybe even abbreviated games that had to be halted due to the rain. (April 30)
