Amsterdam Pirates avoids sweep with small win; HCAW in Top-4 Pool
Nederlands

BUSSUM (Neth.) - L&D Amsterdam Pirates trailed after four innings, but came back and nipped HCAW 4-3 on Sunday (August 30) in the finale of their 3-game series to avoid a sweep.

Despite the loss, HCAW became the third team to clinch a spot in the Top-4 Pool. HCAW secured its spot due to the losses suffered by Twins Oosterhout and Quick Amersfoort.

On Thursday, HCAW trailed after six innings in the opener, but then rallied in the seventh inning to win 5-3. On Saturday, HCAW turned a 2-1 deficit into a small 3-2 win. With that, Pirates lost two games in a row for the first time this season. With today's win, HCAW's 5-game winning streak ended.

Today, HCAW led 3-0 after four innings. Pirates came back to 3-2, then scored twice in the eighth to decide the game.

Pirates got only six basehits, including three by Denzel Richardson. HCAW got only three basehits off of three pitchers.

Roelie Henrique of Amsterdam Pirates became the second player this season to steal four bases in one game. On August 20, Dwayne Kemp (Curaçao Neptunus) was the first and then was the first player since May 12, 2013 to do so. On that day, it was Gyenuar Lopez (Neptunus), who stole four bases in a game against ADOLakers. Henrique's four stolen bases are the most by a Pirates-player since May 21, 2015. Five years ago, it was Henrique who stole three bases in a game against DSS.

(August 30)

HCAW opened the score in the bottom of the fourth inning by scoring three runs. That also would be the only inning in which the home-team scored today.

In its first four innings, Amsterdam Pirates got three runners in scoring position, but they all stranded on second base. HCAW-starter Nick Keur retired the side in the first inning. With one out in the second inning, the lefthander gave up a single to Denzel Richardson, who moved into scoring position on a following grounder by Rashid Gerard, but then was left behind.

In the third inning, Pirates got two baserunners. With one out, Roelie Henrique reached on an error and stole second base. With two outs, Sharlon Schoop walked, but they also stranded on the bases.

With two outs in the fourth, Rashid Gerard doubled and became the third runner to be left behind on second base.

HCAW got only one baserunner in its three innings, but then rallied for three runs in the fourth off of starter Naut Kragt. With one out in the bottom of the first, Berend Ruben reached on an error and moved into scoring position on a grounder by Patrick Bok. After Ruben had reached, Kragt retired eight batters in a row, but then saw the next four batters reach base in the fourth.

In the bottom of the fourth, Berend Ruben led off and again reached on an error. The bases then got loaded when Naut Kragt hit both Patrick Bok and Arthur Bonevacia with a pitch. The righthander then also missed the strike-zone on next batter Rodney Daal, whom he walked, resulting in the first run. With the bases still loaded, Mike Groen took over the Amsterdam-pitching. He was greeted with a runscoring single by Christopher Ge, then saw another runner score when Arthur Lugtmeijer grounded into a double play. Another grounder followed to end the inning, but HCAW led 3-0.

In the following five innings, HCAW got only three more baserunners, but was unable to add more runs.

Trailing 3-0, Amsterdam Pirates got one run back in the fifth inning. With one out, Roelie Henrique singled, stole second base, then moved to third base on a wild pitch. Nick Keur then walked Delano Selassa. With runners on first and third base, Henrique and Selassa executed a successful double-steal, which led to the run.

Pirates narrowed the deficit to 3-2 in the sixth inning. Kalian Sams led off with a walk and stole second base. He then scored when Denzel Richardson delivered an RBI-double. A pitching change followed, as Bobbie Gnade relieved Nick Keur. He struckout Rashid Gerard, but strike-three ended in a passed ball. Richardson tried to advance to third base, but got into a rundown and was eliminated, while Gerard reached first base. Moments later, Gerard reached second base on a wild pitch, then stole third base with two outs. Gnade walked next batter Max Clarijs, but then closed with a strikeout.

Gnade retired the side in the seventh. The righthander then ran into problems in the eighth. He walked lead-off hitter Kalian Sams and gave up a single to Denzel Richardson (his third basehit in the game), which gave Pirates runners at the corners. Next, Gnade uncorked a wild pitch that enable Sams to score the tying run. Hereafter, Gnade walked Rashid Gerard and was relieved by Jasper Elfrink, who got a flyout (bunt) and groundout. But with runners on second and third base, Elfrink gave up a runscoring single to Roelie Henrique, which gave Pirates a 4-3 lead. Moments later, Henrique stole his fourth base in today's game. Pirates stranded runners on second and third base, but had turned the game its way.

There also was an ejection in the top of the eighth inning. Rudy Dirksen, HCAW's 3B Coach, made some remarks and was ejected by Home Plate Umpire Roy van de Wateringen.

After Pirates had scored its first run in the top of the fifth, HCAW got a runner in scoring position in its fifth at bat. With two outs, Berend Ruben walked, but stranded on second base.

In the bottom sixth inning, moments after Pirates had narrowed the deficit to 3-2, Tom de Blok took over the pitching for the Amsterdam-team. The righthander retired the side in both the sixth and seventh inning. This season, De Blok was to pitch professionally in a Minor League-team of the Detroit Tigers, but because of the coronavirus pandemic, the entire Minor League-season was cancelled.

In the bottom of the eighth, De Blok gave up a lead-off single to Jeandro Tromp. He stole second base, then also was left behind on second base.

In the ninth, with Pirates now leading 4-3, HCAW got one final scoring opportunity. Rodney Daal led off with a single, then his pinch-runner Pascal Zegwaard advanced on a sacrifice bunt by Christopher Ge. Moments later, Zegwaard was caught stealing at third base. The game then ended when Arthur Lugtmeijer grounded out.
