Neptunus completes sweep vs. Storks after game changes site
Nederlands

THE HAGUE / ROTTERDAM (Neth.) - Curaçao Neptunus won 8-1 on Sunday (August 30) against Silicon Storks to complete a sweep and record its 17th consecutive victory. For Storks, this was its seventh loss in a row.

Today's game was scheduled to be played at the home-site of Storks in The Hague. However, the field there had becomes unplayable due to rain overnight. Instead of cancelling the game due to the field-conditions, both teams decided in the morning to move the game from The Hague to the home-site of Neptunus in Rotterdam. With that, all three games were played in Rotterdam, including the two home-games for Storks, which is pretty unique.

Transfering the game from one site to another wasn't the biggest challenge. That was created when the starting game also was changed. Storks starts its home-game at 2:30 PM, while Neptunus begins at 2 PM. Instead of leaving the starting time at 2:30 PM (after all, it was a home-game of Storks), it was decided that the game would begin at 2 PM. That not only meant that all players had to be at the field earlier than would have been the case in The Hague, it also meant that the game-officials (umpires, official scorers) had to be in Rotterdam earlier. Instead of traveling to The Hague for a 2:30 PM game, they now had to travel some 30 minutes longer for a 2:00 PM game. But in the end, everyone was on time in Rotterdam and the game went underway a few minutes after 2 PM.

On Thursday, Neptunus scored ten runs in the first two innings in the series-opener and went on to win 10-1 in a game that was halted after five complete innings due to heavy rain.

On Saturday, Neptunus recorded an 11-1 victory in seven innings in the second game.

Today, Neptunus briefly trailed, but took the lead in the fourth inning. The team scored seven of its eight runs in the three middle innings.

Neptunus collected 13 basehits, including three by Gregory Muller, who batted in two runs. Dudley Leonora scored three runs, while John Polonius homered.

Storks got six basehits off of five pitchers.

(August 30)

Storks opened the score in the bottom of the first inning off of starter Jiorgeny Casimiri. He got the bases loaded quickly. The righthander walked lead-off hitter Jurian Hansen, then gave up a single to Brian Raap and also walked Luuk Visser. Moments later, Hansen scored on a double play-grounder by Ibrahin Redan. It was to be the lone run Storks scored today.

For Casimiri, this was the lone inning he pitched. This was his first pitching appearance since July 23, which was Opening Night. He then threw the final two innings of an 8-3 loss against L&D Amsterdam Pirates. This season, Casimiri was to pitch professionally in the Minor League for the Toronto Blue Jays. Due to the coronavirus pandemic, the entire Minor League-season was cancelled. Most Dutch pitchers who would play professionally this season are pitching in the Dutch big league instead. However, while they have permission to play, they cannot be over-used.

Casimiri was used as 'opener' by Neptunus Head Coach Ronald Jaarsma, as was Misja Harcksen, who threw the second inning. The former pro retired the side. In the third inning, Kaj Timmermans took the mound for Neptunus. He was the announced starter for this game. The righthander gave up a lead-off single to Virginie Jurnest, then walked Brian Raap with one out. The two stranded on second and third base.

In the fourth inning, Storks got into scoring position again. This time, Juriaan Dijk led off with a single and stole second base, but was left behind.

Neptunus got scoring opportunities in the first and third inning off of Twan Naessens, but was held scoreless. In the first inning, the team got a chance to open the score, as it got the bases loaded. Stijn van der Meer led off with a walk, then Dwayne Kemp singled with one out and Gianison Boekhoudt also walked. The inning ended with a double play.

In the third inning, John Polonius (with one out) and Gianison Boekhoudt (with two outs) both walked. A force out ended this at bat.

In the top of the fourth inning, Neptunus scored twice. Dudley Leonora led off with a single and stole second base, then Shaldimar Daantji reached on an error. Hereafter, Leonora scored the tying run when a walk for Gregory Muller ended in a wild pitch. Daantji scored the go-ahead run on a sacrifice fly by Coco Johnson.

Neptunus added three unearned runs in the top of the fifth inning, as the Storks-defense made three errors. Overall, the team from The Hague made six errors in this game. With one out, Dashenko Ricardo reached on an error and Dudley Leonora walked. Next, the bases got loaded when an error was made on a force play-grounder by Shaldimar Daantji, which might have resulted in a double play. With the bases loaded, Diornick Sanchez became the new pitcher for Storks. He was greeted with a 2-run single by Gregory Muller, then the bases got loaded when another error was made on a force play-grounder. Moments later, Daantji scored on a sacrifice fly by pinch-hitter Benjam Dille, before the inning ended when a force play-grounder was successfully turned into an out.

Facing new pitcher William Sowers, Neptunus added two more runs in the sixth. While two errors were made in this at bat, both runs were earned. The first run already was earned, the second became earned due to following actions. Dwayne Kemp led off with a single and stole second base, then Gianison Boekhoudt walked for the third time. In a following double-steal attempt, Boekhoudt was caught stealing. Kemp advanced to third base, then scored on a double by Dashenko Ricardo. The latter was eliminated at third base trying to advance on a grounder to short by Dudley Leonora, which was followed by a brief rain-delay. After a 5-minute interruption and now leading 6-1, it was Leonora who stole second base and when that was followed by a throwing error and an outfield-error, he was able to continue running and score. When the two errors were not made, Leonora would be at second base. However, his run became earned, as a walk, single and another walk followed, meaning he would have scored anyway. But Neptunus left the bases loaded when a flyout ended the at bat.

Neptunus scored its eighth run in the top of the seventh when John Polonius led off with a homerun.

In the bottom of the sixth, with Neptunus leading 7-1, Storks got two runners in scoring position off of new pitcher Kevin Kelly. With one out, Ibrahin Redan and Jurriaan Dijk singled. The two advanced on a passed ball, then were left behind. Kelly retired the side in the seventh, as did his successor Aaron de Groot in the eighth.

In the top of the ninth, Neptunus recorded three basehits, but didn't score. John Polonius led off with a single, but Quintin De Cuba then grounded into a double play. De Cuba replaced Dwayne Kemp in the sixth inning. With two outs, Julian Goins, who replaced Gianison Boekhoudt in the seventh, singled. Hereafter, infielder Kelvin Knape became the new pitcher for Storks. He gave up a single to Dashenko Ricardo, but a grounder then ended the at bat.

In the ninth, Joost van den Bergh singled for Storks with one out. Hereafter, De Groot struckout the next two batters to give him five in the two innings he threw.
