However, the baseball-season is currently on hold, as all regular season-games have been annuled through June 30 because of measures taken against the spread of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. New dates have not yet been announced. (© Photo: Henk Seppen) From March 12 on, the Government of the Netherlands regularly announced several (strict) measures due to the coronavirus. In a following update on May 6, a little more freedom was announced, but it was also said that official games and competitions remain prohibited through September 1. The latest update was last Wednesday (May 27). From June 1 on, some of the measures are loosened up somewhat, including opening (parts of) restaurants, terraces, cinemas, theaters and schools. On May 12, the Royal Netherlands Baseball and Softball Association (KNBSB) announced that it has annuled all official regular season games in all baseball/softball leagues through Tuesday, June 30. The KNBSB is in talks with the NOC*NSF (Netherlands Olympic Committee/Netherlands Sports Federations) regarding options how to continue, as it still hopes a new season can be played this year. During this Pentecost Weekend, the seventh series was to close the first half of the season in which all eight teams have feaced each other in a 3-game series. Because of the participation of Dutch reigning champion L&D Amsterdam Pirates and Holland Series-loser Curaçao Neptunus in the European Champions Cup-Tournament, two games were also scheduled to be played on Friday-evening. This not only to enable these teams to travel to Ostrava in the Czech Republic, but also to set up their pitching rotation for the tournament. With this, on Whitsunday, only two games were scheduled to be played. HCAW would play is home-game on Sunday in the evening, as its game was to be played during its annual 3-day international tournament on its home-site in Bussum. This event of course also was cancelled. From coming Tuesday (June 2) on, Amsterdam Pirates and Neptunus were scheduled to particiapte in this years tournament for the European Champions Cup. In Ostrava (Czech Republic), Amsterdam Pirates would be joined by Arrows Ostrava (Czech Republic), Bonn Capitals (Germany) and Nettuno Baseball City (Italy) in Group B. Neptunus would play in Group A and would meet Fortitudo UnipolSai Bologna (Italy), Heidenheim Heideköpfe (Germany) and Rouen Huskies (France) in the preliminiary round. The event was to be played at Arrows Family Park and would end coming Saturday (June 6). The tournament was cancelled on April 1 by the European Baseball Confederation (CEB) due to the coronavirus. We don't know when, but baseball and softball of course also will be back in the Netherlands! Of course only when it is safe to do so for everyone involved. Until then, take care and stay safe! Beneath are the games that were scheduled to be played during this sunny Pentecost Weekend on Friday, Saturday and Sunday with the assignments of the game-officials.
