Hoofddorp Pioniers shuts out Quick Amersfoort to clinch Top-4 Pool
Nederlands

AMERSFOORT (Neth.) - Hoofddorp Pioniers shutout Quick Amersfoort 4-0 in a make-up game on Monday-evening (August 31) to record its sixth consecutive win. For Quick, this was its fifth loss in a row. With the win, the final decision fell in the regular season, as Pioniers became the fourth and last team to qualify for the Top-4 Pool. With tonight's win by Pioniers, Twins Oosterhout and Quick Amersfoort were both eliminated. They will play in the Bottom-4 Pool in the postseason. Twins could end up in a tie with Pioniers, but the head-to-head results (3-0) are in favor of the Hoofddorp-team.

Tonight's game (which was a home-game for Pioniers) was originally scheduled for last Thursday-evening as the opener of their 3-game series. The game was scheduled to be played in Amsterdam, but was cancelled in the afternoon due to the field-conditions after a brief, but heavy rain-shower. The game was re-scheduled for Friday-evening, this time in Haarlem. Again, the game rained out, this time due to heavy rain some 1½ hours before the scheduled starting time. The game was then scheduled for tonight and this time at the site of opponent Quick Amersfoort.

It marks the third different site for tonight's game to be played. The main-field of the Pioniers-complex is not available due to maintenance-work and as Field #2 has no light-installation, the team plays its home-games in the evening on other locations. It is hoped that Pioniers can use the main-field again coming weekend.

On Saturday, the next game was halted with one out in the bottom of the fifth inning due to rain. Some fifteen minutes after the umpires had ordered to do some maintenance work on the field, reports state that home-team Quick Amersfoort had done nothing to prepare the field. At that moment, the umpiring crew halted the game. With that, it didn't make it a game that was halted by rain, but was halted due to an umpiring's decision. The status of that game has yet to be determined by the league's office.

On Sunday, Hoofddorp Pioniers defeated Quick Amersfoort with an 8-1 in the first game of the series that could be completed.

Tonight, Pioniers scored runs in the first, third, fifth and seventh inning. Quick also got several scoring opportunities, but was held scoreless by three pitchers.

Pioniers collected eight basehits, including three by Max Draijer.

Victor Draijer was 1-for-2 tonight and extended his hitting streak to sixteen games. This doesn't include the stats of Saturday's halted game, which has no status yet. After tonight's game, Draijer leads the league with a .508 batting average.

(August 31)

Hoofddorp Pioniers-starter Lars Broersen retired the side in the top of the first inning, then was supported with a run in the bottom half of the inning. Quick Amersfoort-starter Jhan Rifaela walked lead-off hitter Nathan Berkel. He moved into scoring position on a grounder by Victor Draijer and a single by Max Draijer. In a double-steal situation, Berkel scored and Draijer moved to second base, but he was left behind there.

Quick got a chance to come alongside in the second inning. With one out, Tijmen Takke singled and with two outs, Taylor Clemensia walked, but a force play ended the at bat.

Rifaela retired the side in the second inning, but the lefthander gave up another run in the third at bat. Again, he walked the lead-off hitter. This time, that was Raul Jacobs, who advanced on a wild pitch. With one out, Victor Draijer also walked, then Max Draijer again singled. That enabled Jacobs to score the second run for Pioniers.

The defense of Pioniers turned a double play in the third inning, then Quick got a runner on third base in the fourth. With one out, Bryan Engelhardt singled, stole second base and moved to third base on a wild pitch, but also was left behind.

In the fourth inning, Pioniers got another runner in scoring position when Jorrit Penseel doubled with two outs, but he stranded on second base.

With one out in the fifth, Jules Cremer walked for Quick, then Jordy Burger singled. They respectively were left behind on third and first base.

In the bottom of the fifth, Pioniers scored another run. With one out, Victor Draijer singled to extend his hitting streak since the start of the season to sixteen games. The bases got loaded when Jhan Rifaela walked Max Draijer and Joey Eeman. That led to a pitching change. Jasper Popken took over and got a grounder from Duco Nuijten. On this grounder, Eeman was forced out, but Victor Draijer scored. With Max Draijer at third base, Nuijten stole second base, but a foul-fly then ended the at bat.

With Pioniers leading 3-0, Angelo Wicklert became the new pitcher for Pioniers in the top of the sixth. He walked the first three batters, but avoided giving up runs. The righthander first walked Rachid Engelhardt, then his brother Bryan Engelhardt. The first Engelhardt stole third base and moments later, the second Engelhardt was caught stealing at second base. Now with one out and a runner on third base, Tijmen Takke walked. Wicklert recovered anf struckout the next two batters.

Quick got into scoring position again in the top of the seventh, but again was held scoreless. With one out, Jordy Burger walked and advanced to third base on a single by Roger Bernadina. The next two batters were eliminated.

In the bottom of the seventh, Pioniers scored its fourth run after the team had left three runners behind in the previous at bat. In the sixth, Jaison Gijsbertha and Jorrit Penseel singled and advanced on a sacrifice bunt by Raul Jacobs. With two outs and first base open, Victor Draijer was walked intentionally by Jasper Popken, who then closed the at bat by striking out Max Draijer.

In the seventh, Temesh Lourens became the new pitcher for Quick. He walked lead-off hitter Joey Eeman, but he was forced out on a following grounder by Duco Nuijten. Lourens then hit next batter Bodhi de Vreede with a pitch. He was then replaced by pinch-runner Daniel Heiligers, who played in his first game for Pioniers. Last year, he played in 15 games for DSS, but transfered to Pioniers after the season. In a double-steal attempt, Nuijten was eliminated, but Heiligers reached second base safely, then scored on a following single by Jaison Gijsbertha to make it a 4-0 score.

In the bottom of the eighth, Pioniers got another scoring opportunity. With two outs, Victor Draijer was hit by a pitch and reached base for the fourth time. Max Draijer followed with his third basehit in the game and also reached base for the fourth time. But Lourens closed the at bat by striking out Joey Eeman.

Nathan Diaby pitched the final two innings for Pioniers. He walked lead-off hitter Bryan Engelhardt in the eighth inning. The veteran player stole both second and third base, but then was left behind. With that, Engelhardt stole three bases tonight. It was the first time since July 21, 2011 that Engelhardt stole three bases in one game. Back then, he played for Kinheim and accomplished the feat against HCAW. His brother Rachid Engelhardt then was the catcher for HCAW.

In the top of the ninth, Quick got its final baserunner in scoring position. Jules Cremer led off with a single and advanced on an one-out single by Roger Bernadina. But a foul-fly and grounder then ended the game.
