THE HAGUE (Neth.) -
DSS/Kinheim recorded its first victory of the exhibition season by winning 9-1 in a 5-inning game against Silicon Storks in The Hague in the lone game played on Saturday (April 10).
The teams will meet each other again on Sunday, but then in Haarlem.
Two other games were also scheduled, but they were cancelled due to the unfavorable weather conditions.
Reigning champion L&D Amsterdam Pirates was to play at home against Twins Oosterhout and Quick Amersfoort was to host Hoofddorp Pioniers.
These teams also were to face each other on Sunday at respectively Oosterhout and Hoofddorp, but these games already were cancelled on Saturday-evening due to rainy conditions.
In today's game, which was played under cold temperatures, DSS/Kinheim had a batting order of eleven players, while Storks batted with nine.
DSS/Kinheim opened the score with two runs in the top of the first inning off of Storks-starter Obed Hernandez, who will make his big league-debut this season.
He got the bases loaded quickly.
Lead-off hitter Thomas Bos reached on an error, then Jochem Koedijk and Jason Jakobus both walked.
Bos then scored the first run on a sacrifice fly by Milan Lammerts.
The bases got loaded again when Aidan Finnegan followed with a single.
Hereafter, the second run was scored on another sacrifice fly, this time hit by Mick van Vliet.
Jakobus, Lammerts and Van Vliet are all newcomers in the Haarlem-squad.
Hernandez recovered and threw a fine second inning, then DSS/Kinheim added a run in the third.
With two outs, Jason Jakobus was hit by a pitch.
He then stole both second and third base and scored on a throwing error.
Hereafter, DSS/Kinheim got the bases loaded again when Milan Lammerts and Aidan Finnegan singled and Mick van Vliet was hit by a pitch.
A pitching change followed and Hernandez was succeeded by veteran righthander Kevin van Veen, who this season will make his comeback in the highest league.
He got a flyout, which ended the at bat and three runners stranded.
Glenn Wassink started for DSS/Kinheim and encountered no problems in the three innings he pitched.
The righthander retired the first seven batters he faced.
With one out in the bottom of the third, Wassink walked Yurdion Martie and with two outs, he gave up a single to Brandley Martina.
Both are newcomers in the team of Storks this season.
With runners at the corners, the inning ended with a pop-fly.
In the top of the fourth, Matis Crouwel led off for DSS/Kinheim with a single and advanced on a wild pitch, but was left behind.
Storks also got a baserunner in its fourth off of new pitcher Jelle Bing.
With two outs, Shaidion Martina reached on an error, but he was forced out.
Leading 3-0, DSS/Kinheim rallied for six runs in the top of the fifth on three basehits.
The bases got loaded when Thomas Bos, Jochem Koedijk and Jason Jakobus all walked.
That brought in new pitcher Gabriel Statia, another newcomer in the Storks-team this season.
He gave up a 2-run single to Milan Lammerts, then got the bases loaded when he walked Mick van Vliet.
The next run was scored when Nick Hofer also walked and two more runs were added on a single by Matis Crouwel.
Moments later, the score was increased to 9-0 on a single by Bram Blokker.
Although there were no outs yet, the at bat was ended after Blokker's single.
Storks then scored its lone run in the bottom of the fifth.
With two outs, Joel Hernandez, who had reached on a fielder's choice, scored on a passed ball.
