HCAW wins second exhibition game vs. Amsterdam Pirates in 8th inning
Nederlands

BUSSUM (Neth.) - HCAW also won its second exhibition game against L&D Amsterdam Pirates on Sunday (April 18). This time, the Bussum-team broke a 3-3 tie in the eighth inning and won with a 5-3 score in an 8-inning game. On Saturday, HCAW shutout the reigning champion with a 7-0 score. Last Thursday-evening, HCAW opened with an 8-2 win against Quick Amersfoort.

From coming Thursday-evening on, both teams will participate in the annual In Memoriam Charles Urbanus Sr. Tournament. The event has a different set-up this year, as it is currently not allowed to organize tournaments due to the measures against the coronavirus (COVID-19). In a normal scenario, all six games of the tournament would have been played at the site of HCAW in Bussum. Now, the participating teams will also play a game on their own home-site. HCAW is the lone team that will play at home on Thursday, Saturday and Sunday, facing respectively Hoofddorp Pioniers, Curaçao Neptunus and Amsterdam Pirates. The Amsterdam-squad hosts Neptunus on Thursday-evening, then travels to Hoofddorp on Saturday, before closing on Sunday in Bussum.

In today's game, HCAW came from behind to leave the field victorious. Amsterdam Pirates led 3-0 halfway the fourth inning. HCAW scored a run in the bottom of the fourth inning, then came alongside in the seventh and scored the winning runs in the eighth. From the fifth inning on, there were a lot of defensive changes, as both coaches tried several possibilities with their players.

Amsterdam Pirates Head Coach Michael Duursma didn't use his regular pitchers in this game, as they weren't not yet available. Three pitchers are recovering from some very minor injuries, but will come into action coming week, four pitchers were inserted in Saturday's game, Luuk ter Beek and Naut Kragt are attending college in the USA, Shairon Martis is still on Curaçao and Donny Breek will play professionally again. Instead, Duursma used four pitchers from the club's second team, who are all non-roster players and were added to the squad for today's game. This team plays in the First Division, but due to the corona-measures it is not clear when the season in the second highest league will open.

Amsterdam Pirates took an early led today, scoring once in the top of the first inning off of starter Dennis Burgersdijk. The righthander gave up a lead-off double to Roelie Henrique, but followed with a strikeout. Thereafter, Gilmer Lampe singled to bring in Henrique. Lampe moved to second base on an outfield-error and advanced to third base on a single by Denzel Richardson. But the inning then ended with a double play.

Pirates was retired in order in the second and third inning by Burgersdijk, then added two runs in the fourth. Kalian Sams led off with a double, moved on a grounder by Gilmer Lampe, then scored when Denzel Richardson reached on a throwing error. Richardson advanced to second base on the error, then scored on a following single by Kenny Berkenbosch to put Pirates ahead, 3-0.

Trailing 1-0, HCAW came into scoring position in the bottom of the first inning off of starter Jelle van der Lelie. He began with a strikeout, but then gave up single to Bob van der Meer and walked Linoy Croes. A flyout and force out followed. Van der Lelie then retired the side in the second at bat.

In the third inning, HCAW got the bases loaded off of new pitcher Dorian Lippens, but got no chance to score, as this at bat ended with two outs. Arthur Bonevacia led off with a walk, but was forced out on a grounder by Kevin Dirksen. He was also forced out on a grounder by Chris Ge. With two outs, the bases got loaded when Bob van der Meer and Linoy Croes walked. That also ended the at bat, as Lippens had reached his pitch-count.

Lippens returned in the fourth inning and HCAW then scored its first run. Rodney Daal led off with a single and with one out, the bases got loaded when Berend Ruben singled and Victor Draijer walked. Daal then scored on a sacrifice fly by Max Draijer, but two runners were left behind.

Lefthander Jasper Elfrink took over the HCAW-pitching in the fifth and then retired the side. Pirates got runners on second and third base in the top of the sixth, but failed to score. Roelie Henrique led off with a single, but he was picked off moments later. Kalian Sams then singled and Gilmer Lampe doubled to create a scoring opportunity. However, the next two batters were retired.

Connor Prins succeeded Dorian Lippens on the mound for Pirates in the fifth. He walked Kevin Dirksen, but then struckout the next batter. Dirksen moved into scoring position on a wild pitch, but stranded on second base.

Bobbie Gnade became HCAW's third pitcher in the seventh. He walked lead-off hitter Thomas Kwakernaak, who advanced on a wild pitch, but stranded on second base.

HCAW had left a runner behind on first base in the sixth, but came alongside in the seventh off of new pitcher Marijn Oor. He got two quick outs, but then walked Kevin Dirksen and Chris Ge. Both scored when Bob van der Meer followed with a triple. Oor closed with a strikeout, but the score was now 3-3.

In the top of the eighth, Pirates got its final baserunner. With one out, Emilson Haswell walked, but a double play ended the at bat.

HCAW then decided the outcome in its eighth at bat. Oliver van der Wijst Severino led off with a single, then Dion Frank walked. Jules Cremer followed with a runscoring single that put HCAW ahead. Next, the bases got loaded when Victor Draijer walked. HCAW then scored another run on a single by Max Draijer. With the bases still loaded and no outs, this at bat also ended prematurely, as Marijn Oor had reached his pitch-count. And that also ended the game.
