Pilot-Pool: RCH-Pinguïns shuts out Quick Amersfoort in series-opener
Nederlands

HEEMSTEDE (Neth.) - RCH Memorie Sieraden opened its third 3-game series in the Major League/First Division Pilot-Pool on Thursday-evening (September 1) with an 8-0 shutout against Quick Amersfoort. Before today's game, Quick was the leader in this newly created postseason-pool with a 4-1-1 record. RCH shared third place with the second team of Twins Oosterhout.

RCH-Pinguïns collected fifteen basehits tonight, including three by Tilsaimy Melfor and veteran Ferd van Stekelenburg, who was added to the team for tonight's game. Van Stekelenburg had two doubles, scored once and batted in three runs. Melfor scored three runs, had one double and batted in one run.

Tonight, two other series in this Pool also opened.

Silicon Storks opened its series against Sparks Haarlem with a 5-3 victory.

The opening-game of the series between the second team of Twins Oosterhout and UVV ended after eight innings with a 10-10 tie.

All three series continue with the second game on Saturday.

(September 1)

The first three innings remained scoreless tonight for both teams. But from the fourth inning on, RCH-Pinguïns scored eight runs. For Quick Amersfoort, on the other hand, the zeroes piled up in the remainder of the game.

With four wins and one tie in six games played, Quick Amersfoort led this Pool after the first two series. But tonight, the team was unable to score a run. Besides that, its defense committed seven errors, while the RCH-offense collected fifteen basehits.

RCH got on the bases right away off of Quick-starter Jhan Rifaela. The lefthander began the first inning with a strikeout, but then gave up singles to Thomas Kwakernaak and Jesse Aussems. A double play followed. In the second inning, with a runner on first base, Rifaela again was supported with a double play. With two outs in the third at bat, RCH got runners on first and second base, but they were left behind.

RCH then opened the score with three runs in the bottom of the fourth. Tilsaimy Melfor and Yurdion Martie led off with singles, which led to runners at the corners as the second hit was followed by an outfield-error. Hereafter, it was veteran Ferd van Stekelenburg, who also singled to bring in Melfor and give RCH an 1-0 lead. The 34-year old Van Stekelenburg played several seasons in the Dutch big league for Almere '90, Amsterdam Pirates, RCH and UVV. The past few years, he plays at a lower level within the RCH-club. During the regular season of this year, Van Stekelenburg was added to the main-squad for two games. On May 5, he was 2-for-4 (one double) against Hoofddorp Pioniers and on May 14, he was 0-for-5 against HCAW. In both games, he was the designated hitter, as he was tonight. With one out, Van Stekelenburg had to do some running. Martie scored from third base when Geoffrey Verhoef hit a double. Van Stekelenburg, who was on first base, moved up to third base, but then continued to score when an outfield-error was made. Shortly thereafter, Verhoef was eliminated at the plate when he tried to score on a grounder by Paris Aguilar Zayas, who himself would be left behind on third base.

The home-team added two runs in the bottom of the fifth. With one out, Jesse Aussems doubled and scored on a following single by Tilsaimy Melfor. With two outs, Ferd van Stekelenburg showed that he still is a productive hitter, as he delivered an RBI-double to lift the lead to 5-0. That also led to a pitching change, as Jhan Rifaela was relieved by Jack Wagner, who was the announced starter for coming Saturday's game.

RCH-Pinguïns left two runners behind in the sixth, but then scored another run in the seventh off of Wagner. He gave up a lead-off single to Yurdion Martie. He was awarded second base on a balk, advanced on an error on a grounder by Leandro Anasagasti, then scored on a single by Geoffrey Verhoef.

RCH increased its lead with two more runs in the eighth. Those runs were scored off of Braden Lee, who also is the Pitching Coach of Quick. Last season, Lee had the same role (playing coach) when he was with RCH-Pinguïns. The team was then led by Marlon Frolijk, who this season is the Head Coach of Quick. Lee hit the first batter he faced, Thomas Kwakernaak, with a pitch. With one out, he gave up a double to Tilsaimy Melfor and when that was followed by an error, Kwakernaak scored. Melfor advanced on a grounder by Yurdion Martie, then scored on the second double tonight by Ferd van Stekelenburg.

Quick Amersfoort got eight baserunners tonight, but only four of them got into scoring position. RCH-starter Jeremy Young had another fine outing on the mound. In the eight innings he threw, Young gave up five basehits. The Australian retired the first seven batters he faced. With one out in the third, Young gave up singles to Marvin Jakobus and Irving Redan, but would be left behind on second and third base.

Young retired the side again in the fourth and fifth inning, but then got the bases loaded in the sixth. After having retired eight batters in a row since the third inning, Young gave up a lead-off single to Irving Redan, but he was forced out on a grounder by Jordy Burger. Next, he got the bases loaded when he gave up singles to Emeron Lourens and Alex Madera. Moments later, Young was supported with a double play.

No more Quick-runners got into scoring position in the final three at bats. Moreno Vork took over from Jeremy Young in the ninth. He retired the side and closed the game with a strikeout.
