Pilot-Pool: Series-opener between 2nd team Twins Oosterhout and UVV ends in tie
Nederlands

OOSTERHOUT (Neth.) - The opening-game of the 3-game series between the second team of Twins Oosterhout and UVV in the Major League/First Division Pilot-Pool on Thursday-evening (September 1) ended in a 10-10 tie. The game ended after eight complete innings, due to the curfew-rule, as at that moment, the 10:30 PM time had been reached.

UVV trailed 8-5 after six innings, but led 10-8 halfway the eighth inning. Moments later, Twins came alongside in what was to be the final at bat in this game.

It marks the second time that a game in this Pool ends with a 10-10 score. On August 18, the opener between Sparks Haarlem and Quick Amersfoort ended with the same score and also was halted due to the curfew-rule.

Tonight, two other series in this Pool also opened.

RCH Memorie Sieraden opened its series against Quick Amersfoort with an 8-0 shutout-victory.

Silicon Storks outscored Sparks Haarlem and won its opener with a 5-3 score.

All three series continue with the second game on Saturday.

(September 1)

In tonight's series-opener, it was Twins Oosterhout-2 that took early 2-0 lead, but UVV scored three runs in the third. Twins came alongside in its third at bat, then trailed again 5-3 after the fourth inning. Again, Twins came back and added five runs to come to an 8-5 lead after six at bats. Next, it was UVV that came back into the game and also scored five runs in the seventh and eighth inning combined. Halfway the eighth, it now was UVV that lead 10-8. However, for the third time tonight, Twins came back and scored twice to tie the score. But due to the curfew-rule, the eighth inning also was the final one and with that, the game ended with a 10-10 score. Lead-off hitters Malcolm Marlin (UVV) and Marnix Ruben (Twins) both scored four runs.

Twins scored a run in each of the first two at bats off of starter Gijs van den Brink to take an early lead. In the first inning, the lefthander gave up a lead-off single to Marnix Ruben, who stole second base and got awarded third base on a balk-call. With one out, he scored on a sacrifice fly by Thijmen Peters.

In the bottom of the second inning, Twins got its first four batters on base, but only the third one scored. Berend Ruben led off with a walk, but was forced out on a grounder by Albin Lebron, who picked off moments later by Van den Brink. With two outs, Stefan Schoonheydt walked. The Belgian player scored when Dick van Heesch followed with a double.

UVV left a runner behind on second base in the first inning and another one on first base in the second at bat. But in the top of the third, the team scored three runs off of starter Jeffrey Levenstone. The righthander hit lead-off hitter Daan Jansen with a pitch. He then moved into scoring position via a passed ball, advanced on a single by Malcolm Marlin and scored on a single by Ryan Wheat. With runners on first and second base, Luke Oliphant also singled and when that was followed by an outfield-error, Marlin was able to score the tying run, while the others runners advanced to second and third base. Levenstone then struckout productive hitter Karl Hosche, but next batter Daan Terstall delivered a sacrifice fly to put UVV ahead, 3-2.

UVV expanded its lead with two runs in the top of the fourth. With two outs, Daan Jansen walked and Malcolm Marlin singled. Again, Ryan Wheat batted in a run with a single. A hit by next batter Luke Oliphant then set everyone in motion, but became a fielder's choice-grounder. On the hit, Marlin scored, but Wheat was eliminated after the run had been scored. With that, the inning ended, but UVV now led 5-3.

That lead also didn't last that long, as Twins rallied for three runs in the bottom of the fifth to re-take the lead. Twins was retired in order in the fourth, which included two line drive catches by short stop Malcolm Marlin. But the game then turned the way of Twins again in the next at bat. When Bo Kops led off with a walk, UVV made a pitching change. Hugo ter Steege took over, but he got some more baserunners. First, he walked Marnix Ruben, then a fielder's choice-grounder by Gijs van Zalingen loaded the bases. Next batter Thijmen Peters also hit a force play-grounder that didn't result in an out. Instead, it enabled Kops to score and when the grounder was followed by an error, Ruben scored the tying run, while Van Zalingen and Peters ended up on third and second base. Moments later, Van Zalingen scored on a sacrifice fly by Jerzy van Gool to put Twins ahead, 6-5.

Twins added two more runs in the bottom of the sixth. The team got the bases loaded when Stefan Schoonheydt, Dick van Heesch and Bo Kops started the at bat with a single. With one out, the first scored on a sacrifice fly by Gijs van Zalingen, then Thijmen Peters followed with a runscoring single to make it an 8-5 score. With runners on the corners, Dieudonne van Zoelen took over the UVV-pitching. Moments later, the inning ended when Kops was eliminated at third base.

UVV was retired in order in the fifth inning by Jeffrey Levenstone, then also by Thijs Rijpstra in the sixth. The team then got a run back in the top of the seventh. Rijpstra gave up a lead-off single by Malcolm Marlin and with two outs, Karl Hoschke also singled. Onno van Gool then became the new pitcher for Twins, but he got the bases loaded when Daan Terstall also singled. When next batter Aaron Isenia also produced a single, a run was scored and UVV kept the bases loaded. But Van Gool avoided giving up more runs when he closed with a strikeout, meaning the three runners were left behind.

In the bottom of the seventh, now leading 8-6, Twins got a chance to add another run, but failed to do so. Reliever Dieudonne van Zoelen gave up a lead-off double to Jerzy van Gool. After striking out the next batter, the lefthander gave up a single to Esra van den Berg. Van Gool tried to score, but was eliminated at the plate. Twins would leave runners behind on first and second base.

In the top of the eigth, the game swinged the other way again, as UVV rallied for four runs. Onno van Gool walked lead-off hitter Etienne van Tielraden, then gave up a single to Raoell Kortstam. The first was forced out on a fielder's choice-grounder by Malcolm Marlin, then a strikeout accounted for the second out. But Van Gool then got the bases loaded when he walked Luke Oliphant and gave up a run when he hit next batter Karl Hosche with a pitch. That led to the next pitching-change. With the bases loaded, Tobias Cox took over, but he walked Daan Terstall, which tied the score at 8-8. An error on a following grounder by Aaron Isenia then led to two more runs and put UVV ahead, 10-8.

As the 10:30 PM curfew-time has been reached, it was clear that the eighth inning would the final at bat in this game. With that, Twins had only one more chance left to do something back. And that is what the team did in the bottom of the eighth. With UVV now ahead 10-8, Raoell Kortstam took over the pitching. He began with a strikeout, but then got problems with his control. The righthander walked Marnix Ruben, who then was awarded second base on a balk. Next batter Gijs van Zalingen also walked and a double steal gave Twins runners on second and third base. Hereafter, Thijmen Peters also walked, which loaded the bases. Another pitching-change followed and Sean Wout took over. But he then walked Jerzy van Gool, which of course led to a run. Moments later, Van Zalingen scored the tying run on a grounder by Berend Ruben. But with runners on second and third base, a flyout ended the at bat and the game.
