Quick Amersfoort closes exhibition season with walk-of win
Nederlands

AMERSFOORT (Neth.) - On a cold Sunday-afternoon (April 3), Quick Amersfoort and RCH Memorie Sieraden played a game that had a lot of action. There were 24 basehits (twelve each) and Quick closed its exhibition-season with a 7-6 walk-off victory.

With that, Quick's new Head Coach Marlon Frolijk won against his former team. Last season, he led RCH-Pinguïns, with whom he then promoted to the big league.

There were ten pitchers in this game. The coaches had all pitchers available, as Saturday's game in Heemstede had been cancelled due to the cold (and snowy) weather conditions of the few days.

Coming Thursday-evening (April 7), the regular season opens. Quick Amersfoort opens against Twins Oosterhout (away on Thursday and Sunday, home on Saturday). RCH opens against reigning champion L&D Amsterdam Pirates (Thursday and Sunday in Amsterdam and on Saturday at home in Heemstede).

(April 3)

After RCH had left a runner behind on second base in the top of the first inning, Quick rallied for four runs in its first at bat off of Lochlan Southee. With one out, the Australian lefthander got the bases loaded when Jorge Hernandez Morantes walked, Taylor Clemensia singled and Rodney Daal also walked. Hereafter, the brothers Ibrahin Redan and Irving Redan produced runscoring singles. An error and a single by Pascal Zegwaard contributed to two more runs.

However, the quick lead was far from comfortable, as RCH came back immediately. The team from Heemstede scored twice in the top of the second inning off off starter Stijn Bruins Slot. He hit lead-off hitter Thomas Kwakernaak with a pitch, made an errant pick-off and gave up an one-out runscoring single to Mart Blijleven, which was followed by an outfield-error. Moments later, Blijleven scored on a single by Yurdion Martie.

In the third inning, RCH scored another run. New pitcher Jhan Rifaela walked lead-off hitter Ties van der Beeke, but followed with a strikeout. That also was the last batter he faced, as he was bothered by something, possibly due to the cold weather. Quick's Head Coach Marlon Frolijk came to the mound and made a quick change. Whether or not he sustained an injury or will be ready for Opening Day (which is coming Thursday) will be clear in the coming days. Deef van Leersum took over and got the bases loaded when he gave up a single to Kwakernaak and walked Sebastiaan van der Horst. An error on a force play-grounder by Blijleven then led to a run, but three runners were left behind, as two flyouts ended the at bat.

Van Leersum and his successor Maverich Lourens gave up no runs in the fourth and fifth inning, but RCH then scored twice in the top of the sixth. Lourens gave up a lead-off double to Yurdion Martie, then hit Teun van der Meer with a pitch. With one out, both scored on a double by Jesse Aussems to put RCH ahead, 5-4.

After the rally in the first inning, Quick was silenced in the next five innings in which it left runners behind on second and third base in the third inning. Trailing 5-4, the home-team re-took the lead in the bottom of the seventh off of Finn Kragt, who had entered the game in the sixth. With one out in the seventh, Clemensia walked and with two outs Ibrahin Redan singled. Both scored on a double by Irving Redan.

Again, RCH came back in the top of the eighth off of Jack Wagner, who had become Quick's fifth pitcher in the seventh. With one out, Martie doubled and went on to score the tying run on a single by Koen Werkman. With runners at the corners and two outs, Wagner closed with a strikeout.

In the top of the ninth, now facing Jasper Popken, Tilsaimy Melfor led off with a bunt-single, but later was caught stealing. The deciding run was then scored in the bottom of the ninth off of Joel Martis, who had thrown a scoreless eighth at bat. In the ninth, he walked lead-off hitter Rodney Daal, who moved to second base on a wild pitch, then reached third on a single by Ibrahin Redan. Daal then scored on a walk-off single by Irving Redan, who was 3-for-4 and batted in four runs. His brother also batted 3-for-4.
