Pilot-Pool: Quick Amersfoort opens series vs. second team Twins Oosterhout with comeback-win
Nederlands

AMERSFOORT (Neth.) - Quick Amersfoort opened the 3-game series against the second team of Twins Oosterhout in the Major League/First Division Pilot-Pool on Thursday-evening (September 8) with a 12-8 victory. Due to the 10:30 PM curfew-rule, the game ended after eight complete innings.

By scoring twelve runs, it seems that Quick Amersfoort had a comfortable evening. However, it was far from that, as the team trailed 8-1 halfway the seventh inning! Quick then scored eleven runs in its sixth and seventh at bat to turn the game around.

Also tonight, the game between Sparks Haarlem and RCH Memorie Sieraden was cancelled in the afternoon as the field had become unplayable due to several rain-showers. The game will be made up coming Tuesday-evening (September 13) in Heemstede.

Although weather predictions stated on Wednesday that there was a 70 percent chance of (thunder)showers, three other games could be played as scheduled tonight. Two of them in the Pilot-Pool, the other one the opener in the best-of-seven Holland Series.

Besides the Quick vs. Twins-game, there also was a game in Vleuten. There, UVV recorded a big 16-2 win against Silicon Storks.

HCAW opened the Holland Series with a 5-4 victory against Curaçao Neptunus in Rotterdam.

(September 9)

After six innings, Twins Oosterhout-2 led 2-1 and then rallied for six runs in the top of the seventh to take what appeared to be a comfortable 8-1 lead. However, it was less from comfortable. Quick Amersfoort answered with a 6-run rally in its seventh at bat, then added five more runs in the eighth (and final) inning.

Twins scored its first run in the top of the second inning off of starter Jack Wagner. Jerzy van Gool led off with a single and Matthew Joossens followed with a double. With one out, Van Gool scored on a grounder by Ben van Dulken.

In the third inning, the Oosterhout-team got another runner in scoring position. With one out, Marnix Ruben walked, stole second base and moved to third on a flyout, but was left behind. The team was then retired in order in the fourth and saw a runner being caught stealing in the fifth.

Quick got into scoring position in its first at bat off of starter Thijs Rijpstra, who made his first start in this Pool. He walked lead-off hitter Jordy Burger and gave up a single to Emeron Lourens. But Burger was caught stealing at third base and Lourens stranded on second base.

After having left a runner behind on first base in the next two at bats and trailing 1-0, Quick came alongside in the bottom of the fourth. Jorge Hernandez Morantes led off with a double and moved on a following grounder by Ibrahin Redan. With two outs, he scored on a single by Marvin Jakobus. When next batter Lars Visser walked, Jeffrey Levenstone took over the pitching for Twins and closed the at bat with a strikeout.

Twins re-took the lead in the top of the sixth. Marnix Ruben led off with a single and was moved into scoring position via a sacrifice bunt by Gijs van Zalingen. After Ruben had stolen third base, he scored on a sacrifice fly by Thijmen Peters.

Quick was kept scoreless by Jeffrey Levenstone in the fifth and sixth inning. He was supported with a double play in the fifth. With two outs in the sixth, the home-team got two baserunners when Pascal Zegwaard and Marvin Jakobus both walked. They were awarded the next base when a balk was called, but with runners on second and third base, Levenstone closed with a strikeout.

And so, the seventh inning began with a 2-1 lead for Twins, which then rallied for six runs with two outs in the top of the seventh to not only take more distance, but also what a appeared to be a comfortable 8-1 lead. Twins got the bases loaded with one out off of Jack Wagner. He walked led-off hitter Matthew Joossens, followed with a strikeout, but then got the bases loaded when Ben van Dulken singled and Dick van Heesch walked. With three runners on base, Deef van Leersum took over the pitching for Quick. He began with a strikeout, but with two outs, Twins struck with a productive rally. Van Leersum walked Marnix Ruben and Gijs van Zalingen, which produced two automatic runs. Thijmen Peters followed with a 2-run single, then the bases got loaded again when Jerzy van Gool walked. Another pitching change followed and Stijn Bruins Slot took the mound. He was greeted with a 2-run single by Matthew Joossens, then closed with a strikeout, but Twins that lifted the lead to 8-1.

Quick answered with a 6-run rally of its own in the bottom of the seventh. When Jeffrey Levenstone walked Amar van Zwieten and Jordy Burger to begin the inning, a pitchig change followed. Centerfielder Marnix Ruben took over, but he got the bases loaded when Emeron Lourens singled. Ruben struckout the next batter, then walked Jorge Hernandez Morantes, which led to a run and kept the bases loaded. The next run was scored on a single by Ibrahin Redan, then two more could be added on a grounder by Pascal Zegwaard. With Redan on second base, Marvin Jakobus homered and that narrowed the deficit to only 8-7.

In the top of the eighth, Twins left a runner behind on first base. Moments later, in the bottom of the eighth, Quick struck again, this time scoring five runs. Lucas den Duijn took over the Twins-pitching, but was unable to keep Quick from scoring, which scored its five runs with two outs. Den Duijn, who is the announced starter for Sunday's game, began with a strikeout. The righthander then gave up an infield-hit to Emeron Lourens and walked Alex Madera, who both advanced on a wild pitch. Next batter Jorge Hernandez Morantes flied out, but it became a sacrifice fly, as Lourens score the tying run. Madera moved to third base on the flyout and to create both a force play as well as to pitch around productive Ibrahin Redan, he got an intentional walk. Pascal Zegwaard followed with a 3-run homerun that put Quick ahead 11-8. Although the curfew-time of 10:30 PM had been reached, the game didn't end at that moment when Quick took the lead. Instead, the inning had to be completed, as of course, this was not the ninth, but the eighth inning. After Zegwaard's homerun, the home-team added another run. Marvin Jakobus walked and Lars Visser singled, then Amar van Zwieten followed with a runscoring single. A foul-fly ended the at bat and this time, it did end the game.
