Pilot-Pool: UVV records big win in series-opener against Storks
Nederlands

VLEUTEN (Neth.) - UVV recorded a big 16-2 victory in seven innings in its series-opener against Silicon Storks on Thursday-evening (September 8) in the Major League/First Division Pilot-Pool. The game was a home-game for Storks, but was played at the site of UVV, as its own home-site in The Hague has no light-installation.

UVV scored four runs in the first and fifth inning, then added an 8-run rally in the seventh inning to reach a mercy-rule run-difference.

Also tonight, the game between Sparks Haarlem and RCH Memorie Sieraden was cancelled in the afternoon as the field had become unplayable due to several rain-showers. The game will be made up coming Tuesday-evening (September 13) in Heemstede.

Although weather predictions stated on Wednesday that there was a 70 percent chance of (thunder)showers, three other games could be played as scheduled tonight. Two of them in the Pilot-Pool, the other one the opener in the best-of-seven Holland Series.

Besides the Storks vs. UVV-game, there also was a game in Amersfoort. There, Quick Amersfoort won 12-8 against the second team of Twins Oosterhout.

HCAW opened the Holland Series with a 5-4 victory against Curaçao Neptunus in Rotterdam.

(September 8)

UVV had three productive at bats tonight. The team scored four runs in the first and fifth inning and led 8-1 after six at bats. UVV then rallied for eight more runs in the top of the seventh.

In the top of the first inning, UVV immediately struck with four runs off of Storks-starter Darryl Jamoena. Malcolm Marlin led off with a single and moved on a grounder by Ryan Wheat. Luke Oliphant and Karl Hoschke followed with RBI-doubles, which produced the first two runs. After next batter Daan Terstall had singled, two more runs were added on a sacrifice fly by Aaron Isenia and a double by Lucas Bekker.

Obed Hernandez took over the Storks-pitching in the second inning and kept UVV scoreless in his first three innings. In both the second and third inning, UVV left a runner behind on second base. In these three at bats, Hernandez gave up only two basehits.

But in the top of the fifth inning, UVV added four more runs, as Hernandez gave up three basehits. Luke Oliphant led off with a single, came into scoring position after an errant pick-off, then scored on an one-out double by Daan Terstall. Another single followed, hit by Aaron Isenia, which led to runners at the corners. Terstall then scored on a wild pitch. After a walk for Lucas Bekker, another wild pitch moved the runners and Isenia then scored the next run on a grounder by Etienne van Tielraden. Bekker went on to score when Daan Jansen reached on an error. And that made it an 8-1 score.

In the meantime, Storks had scored its first run in the fourth inning off of Stefan Kuipers, who made his first start in this Pool for UVV. Kuipers, who primarily is an infielder, gave up a lead-off single to Jurian Hansen in the bottom of the first inning, but with one out, a double play ended the at bat. In the third inning, Kuipers walked lead-off hitter Kelvin Knape, but he stranded on second base.

Storks then scored its first run with two outs in the bottom of the fourth. Edvin Yrausquin singled with two outs, then Sigmar Eustacia was hit by a pitch. Moments later, Yrausquin scored on a single by Ruben Scheurkogel.

In the fifth inning, Kuipers was supported with another double play. And in the sixth, Storks left another runner behind on first base.

With an 8-1 lead, UVV rallied for eight runs in the top of the seventh off of new pitcher David van Heyningen. With one out, eight consecutive batters reached base. The righthander first got the bases loaded with one out when he walked Lucas Bekker, Etienne van Tielraden and Daan Jansen. With a 7-run lead, next batter Malcolm Marlin placed a bunt and reached on a bunt-single, which led to a run and kept the bases loaded. The next two runs were added when Van Heyningen walked Ryan Wheat and Luke Oliphant. The rally continued with a 2-run single by Karl Hoschke and a 2-run triple by Daan Terstall. The latter then scored the eighth run in this at bat on a grounder by Aaron Isenia.

Dieudonne van Zoelen pitched the bottom of the seventh for UVV and gave up the second Storks-run. He walked lead-off hitter Joshua Ernestina, then Kelvin Knape reached on an error. The two runners moved on a grounder by Curtis Duinkerk, then Ernestina scored on a grounder by Quinten Rigters. Van Zoelen closed with a strikeout and that also ended the game.
