AMSTERDAM - Connor Prins, who this season is one of the pitchers of L&D Amsterdam Pirates, has signed a 5-year Minor League-contract with Seattle Mariners. The 18-year old righthander confirmed the signing on Facebook on Wednesday (August 10).

The pitcher was scheduled to leave for the USA later this week, where he was to begin a 2-year period at Panola College in Carthage, Texas. There, he was to play in the baseball-team of the College, which plays in Region 14 of the NJCAA (National Junior College Athletic Association). Instead, Prins was signed to a 5-year contract by the Seattle Mariners-organization on Tuesday. Next year, the pitcher will begin his professional career at the Rookie League-level in Arizona.

In the past college-season, Connor's brother Scott Prins also played in Texas, but in another Region of the NJCAA. He then pitched for Hill College (Hillsboro) and was 6-2 with a 5.05 ERA and 48 strikeouts in 57 innings, appearing in twelve games. Scott Prins also is one of the pitchers of Amsterdam Pirates this season.

Last year, Connor Prins was a member of the Netherlands Under-18 Baseball Team that captured the title at the European Championship in Italy. During that event, Prins made two starts and was 1-0 with an 1.56 ERA, striking out eleven batters in nine innings. Prins started against Israel, threw the first three innings and struckout six batters, but had a no-decision in the game that was won 13-0 by the Netherlands. He then started, threw six innings and was the winning pitcher against Lithuania in a game that won 6-2 by the Orange Team. Including Prins, eighteen players from this Championship-team play (or have played) in the Dutch big league this season.

Connor Prins made his debut in the Dutch big league last season and then made two appearances in the main-squad of L&D Amsterdam Pirates, both in relief. He was 0-0 with a 4.50 ERA and threw two innings, striking out four batters, also walking four, but gave up no basehits. Although he was on the postseason-roster for Pirates in 2021, Prins didn't pitch for the team in the Play-Offs and the Holland Series, which was won by the Amsterdam-team. The majority of the 2021 season, he pitched for the second team of Amsterdam Pirates with whom he won the title in the First Division.

This season, Connor Prins pitched in seven games for Pirates (three starts) and is 0-2 with a 13.15 ERA. In 13 innings pitched, Prins struckout 12 batters, walked 30, but gave up only nine basehits. He also gave up 20 runs (19 earned). In June, Prins pitched in 2/3 inning for Pirates during the European Champions Cup-tournament in Germany.

Connor Prins made his last appearance for Pirates last Sunday in the final game of the regular season against HCAW. Coming Thursday, Amsterdam Pirates opens the best-of-three Wild Card Top Series against Curaçao Neptunus.
