Pilot-Pool: UVV wins again and completes sweep against Storks
Nederlands

THE HAGUE (Neth.) - UVV completed a 3-game sweep against Silicon Storks by winning 4-2 on Sunday (September 11) in the Major League/First Division Pilot-Pool. On Thursday, UVV opened with a big 16-2 win, then added a 6-1 victory on Saturday.

Today, UVV took an early lead and its pitching gave up only two basehits, but one of them was a homerun.

Two other games in this Pool were also played today.

In Haarlem, Sparks Haarlem won 7-4 against RCH Memorie Sieraden, which had won on Saturday (5-3). Thursday's opener rained out and will be made up coming Tuesday-evening (September 13) in Heemstede.

Quick Amersfoort recorded a convincing 10-0 shutout-victory against the second team of Twins Oosterhout. On Thursday-evening, Quick Amersfoort won the opener 12-8 after trailing 8-1. The second game rained out on Saturday and will also be made up coming Tuesday-evening in Oosterhout.

In Rotterdam, HCAW shutout Curaçao Neptunus on the second day in a row to take a 3-0 lead in the best-of-seven Holland Series. HCAW opened the Championship Final on Thursday with a 5-4 win, then won 2-0 on Saturday. Today, HCAW won only 1-0. The Holland Series continues coming Saturday in Bussum.

(September 11)

UVV took an early lead, scoring one run in the top of the first inning off of starter Mike van den Berg. The righthander began with a strikeout, but then walked Ryan Wheat, who stole second base, before next batter Karl Hoschke also walked. Wheat then moved to third base on a passed ball and moments later, Hoschke also stole second base. With two runners in scoring position, Tijmen Takke followed with a sacrifice fly and Wheat scored the first run. Hoschke advanced to third base, but was left behind there.

After the Storks-defense turned a double play in the second inning, UVV failed to add another run in the third when it got the bases loaded. Daan Jansen led off with a double, but was unable to advance on an infield-hit towards third base by Luke Oliphant. After striking out American Ryan Wheat, Van den Berg got the bases loaded when he walked Karl Hoschke. Hereafter, Tijmen Takke hit a comeback-grounder to Van den Berg, who was able to force out Jansen at the plate. A grounder ended the at bat and so, three runners were left behind.

But in the fifth inning, UVV doubled its lead. Luke Oliphant led off with a walk and moved into scoring position on a grounder by Ryan Wheat. With two outs, Oliphant scored on a double by Tijmen Takke.

UVV got the bases loaded again in the top of the seventh, but again didn't score. Daan Jansen (who was 3-for-4) led off with a single, stole second base and moved to third on a wild pitch. With two outs, UVV got the bases loaded when Karl Hoschke was hit by a pitch and Tijmen Takke walked. But the three runners were left behind when a comeback-grounder ended the at bat.

UVV then added two more (unearned) runs in the top of the eighth off of new pitcher Darryl Jamoena. With one out, Jaycy Fluonia was able to go all the way to third base on an error. Moments later, he scored on a sacrifice fly by Etienne van Tielraden. Now with two outs, Daan Jansen singled and stole second base. He then scored UVV's fourth run when an error was made on a grounder by Luke Oliphant.

Storks was kept scoreless in seven innings by UVV-starter Aaron Isenia. In those at bats, the team got into scoring position only twice. After having retired three batters in a row, the lefthander gave up a lead-off single in the second to Edvin Yrausquin, who was then moved into scoring position via a sacrifice bunt by Sigmar Eustacia. He advanced to third base on a grounder by Kelvin Knape, but was left behind.

In the next four innings, Storks got only two baserunners off of Isenia, who struckout four batters in these at bats, but both stranded on first base.

In the bottom of the seventh, trailing 2-0, Storks got its second runner in scoring position. Lead-off hitter Edvin Yrausquin reached on an error, then his pinch-runner David van Heyningen advanced when Kelvin Knape walked with one out. The two were left behind, as Aaron Isenia struckout the next two batters.

In the bottom of the eighth, Storks finally was able to score, but the team now trailed 4-0. With one out, Isenia hit Jurian Hansen with a pitch, then Raibiently Mercalina hit the ball over the leftfield-fence for a 2-run homerun. This was the second homerun for Storks in this Pool. In the entire regular season (42 games), the team had no homeruns.

With a 4-2 lead, Hugo ter Steege threw the ninth inning for UVV. With one out, he got a runner on second base when a hit by Twan Naessens ended in an outfield-error. He stranded there, as a groundout and strikeout ended the inning and the game.
