Chadwick Tromp productive in first game back in Major League
Nederlands

MIAMI, Florida (USA) - Chadwick Tromp is back in the Major League and he let his presence known immediately in the first game he played on Saturday (August 13). Tromp was the catcher for Atlanta Braves in the first game of a double-header against and at Miami Marlins. He was 3-for-4 with two doubles and batted in three runs in a 5-2 victory.

The 27-year old Aruba-born Chadwick Tromp was recalled to Atlanta's big league-team last Sunday (August 7), but didn't play until today in what was his first game for Atlanta Braves. Tromp was recalled after first catcher Travis d'Arnaud sustained a leg injury the day before. Tromp made his Major League-debut in 2020 playing in 24 games for San Francisco Giants. He then batted .213 (13-for-61) with four homeruns, scored eleven runs and batted in ten. Last year, Tromp played in nine games for San Francisco, hitting .222 (4-for-18) with one homerun.

In September last year, Tromp was designated for assignment by San Francisco. Three days later, the catcher was claimed off waivers by Atlanta, which optioned him to Gwinnett Stipers in Triple-A. In October, he was added to the 40-man roster of Atlanta. Tromp played in four games for Atlanta in Spring Training (hitting 2-for-5), but started the 2022 season again with the Triple-A team.

This year, Tromp played in 68 games for Gwinnett in Triple-A and batted .259, collecting 63 basehits, including eleven doubles and twelve homeruns. Tromp scored 33 runs and batted in 41.

At loanDepot park in Miami, Chadwick Tromp got his first at bat on Saturday in the top of the third inning. With one out, he then doubled, but was left behind on second base.

Tromp got his next at bat in the fourth. Atlanta had the bases loaded with Austin Riley, William Contreras and Robbie Grossman (all singled) with one out. Riley was then forced out at the plate on a grounder by Vaughn Grissom. With two outs, Contreras scored when Michael Harris II walked. That brought Tromp in the batter's box. Again, he made good contact and this time, he batted in two runs with his second double, which increased Atlanta's lead to 3-0.

Miami got two runs back in the bottom of the fourth on an one-out, 2-run homerun by Jesus Aguilar. But Atlanta answered with another run in the fifth when Matt Olson hit a 2-out homerun.

In the top of the sixth, Tromp grounded out, but he then brought in an insurance run in the eighth. With two outs, Michael Harris II (who had reached on a fielder's choice) stole second base. Moments later, he scored on a single by Tromp.

Kyle Muller was the starting pitcher for Atlanta and pitched in the Major League for the first time since May 1. He was recalled from Triple-A earlier on Saturday and threw five solid innings for Atlanta. In this season, Muller and Tromp regularly formed the battery for Gwinnett Stripers, so the two know each other well. Today, Muller struckout five batters, walked one and gave up only three basehits to become the winning pitcher. After the game, Muller was sent back to Triple-A.

Chadwick Tromp plays professionally since 2013. In May of that year, he was signed by Cincinnati Reds at age 18. Since the 2013 season, the catcher played in all Minor League-levels (Rookie League, Single-A, Double-A, Triple-A) in the Reds-organization. After having played seven seasons in the Minors for Cincinnati, Tromp was a Free Agent at the end of the 2019 season. In January 2020, he was then signed by San Francisco Giants and was assigned to its Triple-A team. However, the entire 2020 Minor League-season was cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic. When the regular season in the Major League went underway in July, Tromp was one of the players at the so-called Alternate Training Site. There, Minor League-players continued to practice and play intersquad-games to be ready to play for the Major League-team when needed in case of a COVID-19 case. On July 28 of 2020, Tromp was recalled and the next day, he made his Major League-debut.

In 2016, Tromp made his debut in the Netherlands National Baseball Team. After making his debut in an exhibition game against France, Tromp played in three games for the Orange-squad during the European Championship in Hoofddorp (Netherlands). During the Championship, he played in his first game against Russia and then homered in his first at bat.

In 2017, Tromp was a member of the preliminary roster of the Netherlands Team for the World Baseball Classic, playing for the squad during preparations in Arizona (USA) and South Korea. Tromp was not on the final roster for the WBC, but stayed with the team as a bullpen-catcher. The Netherlands qualified for the Semi-Final, which was played in Los Angeles (USA). After completion of the Second Round, a change on the Orange-roster was made due to an injury. Tromp was then added to the active WBC-roster, but he didn't play in the Semi-Final against Puerto Rico.
