Ozzie Albies breaks pinky after coming back from injury
Nederlands

ATLANTA, Georgia (USA) - Ozzie Albies is back on the injured list. The 25-year old Curaçao-born second baseman returned to action for Atlanta Braves on Friday after having recovered from a fractured left foot, which he sustained on June 13. Unfortunately, the next day, on Saturday (September 17), Albies broke the pinky on his right hand while making a sliding. Because of that, he will miss the remainder of the regular season.

When he returned into the team on Friday after his long absence, Albies immediately made his presence known.

On Friday, Albies played in his first game after being sidelined for three months. Playing at home against Philadelphia Phillies, he was back at his familiar position at second base and batted 1-for-4, which was a 2-run double in the eighth inning when Atlanta rallied for six runs. Atlanta won 7-2.

In Saturday's game, Albies led off the third inning with a walk and went on to score when Ronald Acuña, Jr. homered with one out. In the fourth inning, with one out, William Contreras and Albies both singled. Next batter Eddie Rosario then flied out to rightfield. After the catch was made, Contreras advanced to third base, while the speedy Albies took off towards second base on the throw from rightfielder Matt Vierling to third base. Short stop Bryson Stott cut off the throw and threw it to second baseman Jean Segura. While making a head-first sliding into second base, Albies probably hit the foot of Segura, who put on the tag. Albies remained on the ground for a brief moment, then stood up and checked his pinky and his hand, but stayed in the game. Moments later, both Contreras and Albies scored on a double by Acuña to put Atlanta ahead 4-0. In the top of the fifth, Albies was replaced at second base by Vaughn Grissom. Atlanta won with a 4-3 score, but during the game, it was diagnosed that Albies had suffered a fracture in his pinky.

It was reported that Albies doesn't needs surgery, but his hand will be in a cast for three weeks. Thereafter, it will be looked whether or not the infielder can play in the postseason. At the moment, Atlanta is in second place in the National League East Division, closely behind New York Mets. So, Atlanta will advance to the postseason as either Division-champion or via a Wild Card.

This season, Ozzie Albies has played in 64 games and batted .247 (61-for-247) with sixteen doubles and eight homeruns. He scored 36 runs and batted in 35.
