Pilot-Pool: RCH-Pinguïns closes season with win against Storks; Heij steps down as Head Coach
Nederlands

HEEMSTEDE (Neth.) - RCH Memorie Sieraden and Silicon Storks closed their 2022 season on Thursday-evening (September 22) by playing their final make-up game in the Major League/First Division Pilot-Pool. Tonight, RCH-Pinguïns recorded a 4-1 victory after having recorded a big 13-1 win in another make-up on Wednesday.

Originally, this game was scheduled for last Sunday as final game of a 3-game series, but then rained out. Four days earlier, on Thursday, the first game also was cancelled due to weather- and field-conditions. That game was re-scheduled for last Tuesday, but then was cancelled again as the field was still unplayable. Finally, the game was made up on Wednesday. The lone game of the 3-game series that could be played as scheduled was on Saturday in The Hague. There, Storks won its final home-game with a 12-7 score.

For Nick Heij, this was his last game as Head Coach of RCH-Pinguïns. Although it was reported recently that he would step down, Heij confirmed afterwards that this indeed is the case. A successor is not yet been named.

After last season, Heij succeeded Marlon Frolijk as Head Coach after the latter had led the team to promotion. Frolijk went on to become the new Head Coach of Quick Amersfoort. This season, RCH made its comeback in the highest league since 2009. The Heemstede-team had a good season and was in fifth or sixth place for most of the time. However, in the second half of the season, the team dropped in the rankings and missed qualification for the Wild Card Qualifier and therefore also a spot in the Wild Card Bottom Series. As there was no Team Manager during this season, Heij took care of all things around the team, together with Bench Coach Marco Wels.

Also tonight, Quick Amersfoort and UVV played the second of three make-up games. After UVV had won 3-1 last Tuesday, Quick tonight won with a 7-3 score. They will close their series and season coming Saturday in Vleuten.

Coming weekend, Sparks Haarlem and Twins Oosterhout-2 will play two make-up games. These will be the final games played in the newly created Pool, which was tested this season.

In Wednesday's make-up game, it was RCH-Pinguïns that opened the score in the first inning. Tonight, Storks opened the score, but again, the team would score only once. The home-team immediately came alongside, broke the tie in the fourth inning and added two more runs in the sixth.

Storks, which outhit RCH 7-6, got its first baserunner in the top of the first inning when Jurian Hansen led off the game with a single off of starter Sven van de Sanden. A double play followed and Van de Sanden closed with a strikeout.

But in the top of the second, the team from The Hague opened the score. Van de Sanden walked the first two batters in this at bat, Ruben Scheurkogel and Kelvin Knape. The two moved on a sacrifice bunt by Twan Naessens. Next, Scheurkogel took off on a grounder by Curtis Duinkerk. A throw to the plate followed, but Scheurkogel was safe and so, Storks took an 1-0 lead. Moments later, Knape and Duinkerk executed a double steal, but they were left behind.

The lead was shortlived, as RCH came alongside in its second at bat off of starter Mike van den Berg. He gave up a lead-off single to former teammate Yurdion Martie, then a single to Leandro Anasagasti, which gave the home-team runners at the corners. Shortly thereafter, Anasagasti was picked off first base by Van den Berg, but he then gave up a double to Ties van der Beeke. That brought in Martie and tied the score.

After leaving a runner behind on first base in the third inning, Storks got into scoring position again in the fourth. With two outs, Curtis Duinkerk and Quinten Rigters both singled, but a grounder ended the at bat.

In the bottom of the fourth, RCH-Pinguïns broke the 1-1 tie after being retired in order in the previous at bat. In the fourth, Tilsaimy Melfor led off with a single and moved to third base via two wild pitches. After next batter Yurdion Martie had walked, Melfor scored when Leandro Anasagasti grounded into a double play.

Storks came close to its second run in the top of the fifth. With one out, Raibiently Mercalina and Sigmar Eustacia both singled. The latter was forced out on a grounder by Ruben Scheurkogel, which moved Mercalina to third base. In a double steal attempt by the runners on first and third base, Mercalina was eliminated at the plate, while Scheurkogel safely reached second base. However, it was the third out and so, the inning ended.

In the top of the sixth, Storks left another runner behind in scoring position off of new pitcher Nick Andringa. With two outs, Curtis Duinkerk singled, stole second base and moved to third base on a wild pitch. A flyout ended the at bat and Duinkerk was left behind.

RCH was more successful in its sixth at bat and added two more runs to take some more distance. The home-team got the bases loaded quickly when Jesse Aussems led off with a walk, Tilsaimy Melfor reached (second base) on a throwing error and Yurdion Martie also walked. That led to a pitching change. Obed Hernandez took the mound for Storks, but he was greeted with a 2-run double by Leandro Anasagasti. Martie also tried to score, but he was eliminated at the plate on a throw from centerfield. But RCH now led 4-1.

In the seventh inning, RCH left runners behind on second and third base. Teun van der Meer led off with a single and with one out, an error was made on a force play-grounder by Thomas Kwakernaak. On a following grounder by Jesse Aussems, Kwakernaak was forced out at second base, while Van der Meer advanced to third base. With runners on first and third base, Johannes Verroen Garcia took over the Storks-pitching. He saw Aussems steal second base, but the closed with a strikeout.

Storks got another scoring opportunity in the top of the eighth when it got the bases loaded off of new pitcher Lars Werkman. He walked lead-off hitter Ruben Scheurkogel, who stole second base. Werkman struckout the next two batters, then hit Curtis Duinkerk with a pitch. After Scheurkogel and Duinkerk had advanced on a wild pitch, a walk for Quinten Rigters loaded the bases. Werkman then closed the at bat with his third strikeout.

In the bottom of the eighth, RCH also got the bases loaded, but also was unable to add another run. With one out, Verroen walked Leandro Anasagasti. As this was the final game of the season, RCH-pitcher Finn Kragt also was given an at bat. He walked after Anasagasti had advanced on a wild pitch. Another wild pitch gave RCH runners on second and third base, then the bases got loaded when Verroen also walked Geoffrey Verhoef. But the inning then ended when Teun van der Meer grounded into a double play.

Werkman got another runner in scoring position in the top of the ninth, but again closed successfully. With one out, the lefthander gave up a double to Raibiently Mercalina, but then struckout the next two batters. With that, he closed the inning, the game and the season for RCH-Pinguïns.
