Roger Bernadina & Jiandido Tromp productive again in second win Leones in Nicaraguan Final
Nederlands

LEÓN (Nicaragua) - Dutch National Team-players Roger Bernadina and Jiandido Tromp again were very productive and valuable for Leones de León, leading the team to its second win of the best-of-seven Championship Final of the Liga de Beisbol Profesional Nacional (LBPN) in Nicaragua. On Wednesday-evening (January 26), Leones led 4-0 after four innings, then trailed 7-4 halfway the fifth, but came back and won 9-7 to equal the series at 2-2. Bernadina and Tromp contributed to the comeback-victory, as they did in Game 3 on Tuesday, resulting in a 2-0 win in ten innings. In the weekend, opponent and reigning champion Gigantes de Rivas won the first two games, 5-1 and 4-2. Game 5 will be played on Friday-evening.

In Game 4, Tromp was 3-for-4, scored twice and batted in two runs. Bernadina was 1-for-4 in the fourth game, but accounted for the game-winning RBI, as he did in Game 3.

Leones, which played at home, took an early lead in the first inning when Jiandido Tromp led off with an infield-hit and scored on a 2-out single by Willy García.

The team added three runs with two outs in the bottom of the fifth. With one out, Leonardo Ortíz reached on an error and with two outs, Tromp singled. Hereafter, Alay Lago hit an infield-hit which was followed by a throwing error. That enabled Ortiz to score and Tromp and Lago both also advanced an additional base. With first base open, Roger Bernadina got hit by the first pitch from starting pitcher Emailin Montilla, which loaded the bases. Willy García followed with a 2-run single that lifted the lead to 4-0.

However, in the top of the sixth, Gigantes erased the deficit with a 7-run rally. First, a run was scored on a wild pitch. Hereafter, Cheslor Cuthbert delivered a runscoring single. After a pitching change and with two outs, Garabez Rosa singled in two runs to tie the score at 4-4. After Wuillians Vasquez received an intentional walk, another pitching change followed. This time, Elmer Reyes (1-run) and Luis Alen (2-run) produced runscoring singles to put Gigantes ahead, 7-4.

In the bottom of the sixth, Leones immediately got two runs back. Adrian Moreno led off with a single off of new pitcher Ronald Medrano. With two outs, Benjamin Alegria walked. The two runners then advanced on a wild pitch and scored when Jiandido Tromp followed with a single.

In the seventh, Leones came alongside when Willy García led off with a double and scored on a 2-out single by Juan Carlos Torres.

Gigantes failed to re-take the lead in the top of the eighth inning. The team had the bases loaded with one out, but the runners were all left behind. After a pitching change, two flyouts ended the at bat.

Leones then took the lead for the second time in the bottom of the eighth, thanks to Bernadina and Tromp. With one out, new pitcher Gustavo Martínez walked Tromp, who then moved on a wild pitch and a grounder. Now with two outs, Leonardo Crawford took over the pitching and was greeted with a runscoring single from Bernadina that put Leones ahead, 8-7. Bernadina then also advanced on a wild pitch and Willy García was walked intentionally. Hereafter, it was Darrel Campbell who delivered a runscoring single, which brought in Bernadina and made it a 9-7 score.

Leones-closer Junior Tellez took the mound in the top of the ninth. With two outs, he gave up a single, but a flyout then ended the game.
