HCAW wins Ringvaart Tournament after shutout-win in Final
Nederlands

HEEMSTEDE (Neth.) - HCAW won the sixth editon of the annual Ringvaart Tournament on Sunday (March 27) thanks to a 6-0 shutout-victory in the Final against Hoofddorp Pioniers. Three years ago, it was Pioniers that won the event after winning 3-0 against HCAW. In 2020 and 2021, the tournament was cancelled due to the measures against the coronavirus (COVID-19).

The second day of the tournament began with a 3-3 tie between Hoofddorp Pioniers and Silicon Storks. With this, Storks was eliminated for the Final.

In the next game, HCAW outscored host RCH Memorie Sieraden 9-2. With that, Pioniers became the second finalist and RCH was eliminated.

In the game for third and fourth place, Storks won 3-1 against RCH. Thereafter, HCAW shutout Pioniers to become the tournament-winner.

It marks the second time that HCAW won this tournament. The Bussum-team also won in 2018 and with that, it became the first club to win the Ringvaart Tournament twice. Other winners are The Hawks (2015), Sparks Haarlem (2016) and Storks (2017).

Final Standings
1. HCAW, 2. Hoofddorp Pioniers, 3. Silicon Storks, 4. RCH Memorie Sieraden.

Game 5 - Hoofddorp Pioniers vs. Silicon Storks
In today's first game, Hoofddorp Pioniers came from behind and led 3-2 when the final at bat began against Siliicon Storks, which then came alongside. Pioniers outhit Storks, 6-3.

In the top of the first inning, Storks opened with two runs off of starting pitcher and former teammate Nick Winkel. The righthander, who transfered to Pioniers after the 2020 season, got two baserunners quickly when he walked Jurian Hansen and Josh Manganiello. The latter was forced out on a grounder by Ervin Irausquin, which brought Hansen to third base. Moments later, both runners scored when Sigmar Eustacia followed with a double.

Thereafter, Winkel would not give up more runs. With Eustacia on second base, a grounder and strikeout ended the first at bat. In the second inning, he issued a lead-off walk to Joel Hernandez, who stole second base and moved to third base on a grounder. He then tried to score on a grounder towards third base by Twan Naessens, but was eliminated at the plate. Winkel retired the side in his third inning.

Trailing 2-0, Pioniers got one run back in the bottom of the first inning off of Darryl Jamoena, who went the distance for Storks. Pioniers got the bases loaded with no outs after (Head Coach) Mervin Gario led off with a walk, Duco Nuijten reached on an error and Jeldwin Orman followed with a bunt-single after his at bat had been extended due to a missed foul-fly. With one out, Mark Smit hit a double. Gario scored, but Nuijten was eliminated at the plate. On Saturday, three Pioniers-runners were eliminated at the plate in the game against HCAW. With runners on second and third base, Jamoena closed with a strikeout.

Pioniers took a 3-2 lead with two outs in the second inning. Jamoena began with two strikeouts, but then walked Jaison Gijsbertha. Hereafter, Daniel Heiligers and Gario hit back-to-back RBI-doubles to put Pioniers ahead, 3-2.

After Pioniers had left a runner behind on third base in the bottom of the third inning, Storks came alongside in the top of the fourth off of new pitcher Tsaun Martina. With one out, Luis Gonzalez doubled and Hernandez walked, then Raibiently Mercalina followed with a double that made it a 3-3 score. With runners on second and third base, Hernandez was eliminated in a rundown trying to score on a grounder by Naessens. In this situation, Mercalina moved to third base. But with runners on the corners, Martina closed with a strikeout.

In the final at bat of Pioniers, Jorrit Penseel led off with a line drive, which was caught. Hereafter, Roy Winkel (who last season played for Storks) singled, but was eliminated trying to stretch it into a double. Gijsbertha then singled, but he stranded on first base, as a flyout ended the game.

In the last round-robin game, HCAW outscored RCH-Pinguïns 9-2 to set up the combinations for the deciding games. With the win, Hoofddorp Pioniers finished in second place to become the second finalist. HCAW already had secured a spot in the Final on Saturday.

In this game, RCH took a 2-0 lead in the second inning off of HCAW-starter Jim Ploeger. The lefthander had retired the side in the first inning (two strikeouts), but gave up four hits in the second at bat. With one out, Mart Blijleven doubled. Game 7 - RCH Memorie Sieraden vs. Silicon Storks (3rd/4th place)
In the game for third and fourth place, Silicon Storks broke an 1-1 tie in the second inning and hold onto the lead. The team from The Hague won 3-1 to finish in third place.

Storks opened the score in the top of the first inning off of starter Lars Werkman. Josh Manganiello led off with a single and then moved into scoring position on an error during a pick-off attempt. Hereafter, Ervin Irausquin walked. He was then forced out on a hit by Jurian Hansen, but in the meantime, Manganiello was able to score. Hansen later stranded on third base.

RCH immediately came alongside in its first at bat. Lead-off hitter Koen Werkman reached on an error, stole second base, then scored on an one-out double by Ties van der Beeke, who himself was eliminated when he tried to stretch it into a triple.

Game 8 - HCAW vs. Hoofddorp Pioniers (Final)
In the Final of the Ringvaart Tournament, HCAW opened the score in its first at bat and hold onto it in the remainder of the game to win the event for the second time.

The game was started by pitchers, who had the same first name, as Lars Huijer took the mound for HCAW and Lars Broersen started for Pioniers.

HCAW scored an unearned run in its first at bat. Lead-off hitter Brendly Martina reached on an error, stole second base, moved to third base on a grounder by Jeandro Tromp and scored on a grounder by Quintin de Cuba.

With two outs in the second inning, Max Draijer and Bob van der Meer both walked for HCAW, then advanced on a wild pitch. They stranded, as Broersen closed with a strikeout.

Huijer retired the side in the first two innings, then got two baserunners in the third. The righthander gave up a lead-off single to Joost van den Bergh, who moved into scoring position via a sacrifice bunt by Jaison Gijsbertha. After Reangelo Willems had walked, Huijer followed with a strikeout, then eliminated Bodhi de Vreede on a broken bat comeback-grounder to end the inning.

But the Bussum-team then doubled its lead in the third. Martina led off with a single, again stole second base and moved to third when that was followed by a throwing error. Moments later, he scored on a single by Anasagasti.

In the fourth inning, Ruben Dekker took over the HCAW-pitching and retired the first five batters he faced (three strikeouts). But with two outs in the top of the fifth, he got the bases loaded when Van den Bergh and Gijsbertha singled and Willems walked. Nick Keur was then brought in to close the at bat and he got an inning-ending force play-grounder.

HCAW had scored again in the fourth inning when Linoy Croes homered with one out off of new pitcher Yassir Lachkar to make it a 3-0 score. This was the lone homerun hit in the tournament.

The team added three more runs in the bottom of the fifth. Brendly Martina led off for the third time for HCAW and reached base again, this time on a walk. The stolen base-leader of the 2021 season then stole second and third base (to give him four in this game) and scored on a grounder by Anasagasti. With two outs, Jair van Borkulo was hit by a pitch. With Van Borkulo on first base, Kevin Dirksen and Linoy Croes hit back-to-back RBI-doubles to make it a 6-0 score.
