Pilot-Pool: UVV wins big in second game against Sparks Haarlem
Nederlands

HAARLEM (Neth.) - UVV recorded a big 18-8 victory against Sparks Haarlem on Saturday (August 27) in the Major League/First Division Pilot-Pool. On Thursday, the First Division-champion opened with a 10-4 win.

Today, two other games were also played in this Pool.

Quick Amersfoort nipped Silicon Storks 10-9. On Thursday, Quick won the first game with a bigger 17-4 score.

The second team of Twins Oosterhout also won its second game of the 3-game series against RCH Memorie Sieraden. On Thursday-evening, Twins opened the series with a 6-4 victory, today, the team won 10-6.

In the remaining Play-Off for the Dutch Championship-title, HCAW won 3-1 against L&D Amsterdam Pirates to win the best-of-five, 3-1. With that, HCAW advances to the Holland Series for the first time since 2005. With the loss, Pirates was dethroned as Champion and its season has now ended.

(August 27)

UVV initially trailed 4-2 after the first inning, but re-took the lead in the second inning and from there, the team enlarged its lead. Sparks Haarlem was able to narrow the deficit in the third and fourth inning, but UVV then decided the game with a 6-run rally in the sixth inning. Despite finishing the game with a 10-run difference, all nine innings were played today.

UVV collected seventeen basehits, including a single, triple and homerun by Karl Hosche, who only missed the double to hit for-the-cycle. The Australian leftfielder scored two runs and batted in six.

UVV opened the score with two unearned runs in the top of the first inning off of starter Mees de By. Malcolm Marlin led off with a single and Ryan Wheat walked. Next batter Luke Oliphant lined out, which was followed by a throwing error, which enabled the two runners to advance. Hereafter, Marlin scored on a sacrifice fly by Karl Hoschke, which was missed in the outfield. That also moved Wheat to third base and he then scored on a sacrifice fly by Daan Terstall. Hoschke would be left behind on third base.

Sparks Haarlem answered with four unearned runs in its first at bat off of starter Gijs van den Brink when the UVV-defense made two errors. Lead-off hitter Jesse van de Berg reached when Van den Brink made an error on a comeback-grounder. Van de Berg stole second base and advanced to third base on a grounder by Ruben Hoek. After a walk for Kevin Nieveld, Van de Berg scored on a following single by Michael Wernik. Moments later, Nieveld scored the tying run when a grounder by Duko Jansen ended in an error, which gave the team runners at the corners. Wernik and Jansen went on to score respectively on singles by Joffrey Heus and Yasar Guntekin.

The lead was shortlived, as UVV answered with a 4-run rally with two outs in the top of the second inning. Etiennne van Tielraden and Daan Jansen began with walks. The first was forced out on a grounder by Malcolm Marlin, but UVV then got the bases loaded via a single by Ryan Wheat. Next batter Luke Oliphant flied out, but that became a sacrifice fly, as Jansen scored. Now with two outs, Karl Hosche followed with a 3-run homerun that put UVV ahead, 6-4.

The team from Vleuten added another run in the third when Lucas Bekker led off with a single and went on to score on a 2-out single by Malcolm Marlin.

Trailing 7-4, Sparks Haarlem scored its next run in the bottom of the third inning. When Gijs van den Brink walked Kevin Nieveld and Michael Wernik, he was relieved by Hugo ter Steege. He got a double play-grounder, but that also moved Nieveld to third base. Shortly thereafter, the veteran player scored when Joffrey Heus reached on an error. Nieveld played more than ten seasons in the Dutch big league for ADO, HCAW, DSS and Storks.

The home-team then narrowed the deficit to 7-6 in the fourth. With two outs, Jesse van de Berg reached on an infield-hit, stole second base and scored on a double by Ruben Hoek.

But that was the closest Sparks could get, as UVV struck with a 6-run rally in the top of the sixth to take more distance.

In the fifth inning, Menno Soederhuijsen had taken over the pitching for Sparks Haarlem and encountered no problems. But in the sixth, he would give up six runs. The rally was started by the productive foreign trio in the UVV-team. Americans Ryan Wheat and Luke Oliphant began with singles, then both scored on a following triple by Australian Karl Hoschke. After Daan Terstall had walked, Hoschke scored on a sacrifice fly by Lucas Bekker. UVV then got the bases loaded when next batter Stefan Kuipers singled and Daan Jansen singled with two outs. All three runners scored when Malcolm Marlin followed with a baseclearing, 3-run triple. Hereafter, Siebe van Pelt took over the pitching and got an inning-ending foul-fly, but UVV had taken a comfortable 13-6 lead.

UVV added another run in the top of the seventh. Luke Oliphant then reached on an error, moved to third base on an one-out double by Daan Terstall and scored on a grounder by Lucas Bekker.

Sparks Haarlem got a run back in its next two at bats off of new pitcher Dieudonne van Zoelen. In the seventh, Jesse van de Berg led off with a walk and later scored on a grounder by Kevin Nieveld. In the eighth, Jerry Zonneveld (fielder's choice) scored on a grounder by Yasar Guntekin.

With a 14-8 lead, UVV staged a 4-run rally in the top of the ninth off of new pitcher Jesse van de Berg. The team got the bases loaded via Luke Oliphant (single), Daan Terstall (walk) and Lucas Bekker (walk). With one out, Stefan Kuipers delivered a 2-run double. Bekker went on to score on a grounder by Etienne van Tielraden and Kuipers scored on an error. With that, UVV increased its lead to 18-8.

Stefan Kuipers then threw the ninth inning for UVV and retired the side to end the game.
