Pilot-Pool: Quick Amersfoort completes sweep against Storks
Nederlands

AMERSFOORT (Neth.) - Quick Amersfoort outscored Silicon Storks 8-4 on Sunday (August 28) to complete a 3-game sweep in the Major League/First Division Pilot-Pool. On Thursday, Quick won the first game with a 17-4 score, then nipped Storks 10-9 on Saturday.

Today, two other series in this Pool also were concluded.

UVV shutout Sparks Haarlem 11-0 in 6½ inning to also complete a 3-game sweep. UVV opened the series with a 10-4 win on Thursday, then won 18-8 on Saturday.

RCH Memorie Sieraden won 12-7 to avoid a sweep against the second team of Twins Oosterhout. In the first two games, Twins won 6-4 and 10-6.

(August 28)

Quick Amersfoort had to erase a 3-1 deficit in today's third game against Storks. The home-team did just that by scoring three runs in the third inning and from there, more runs were added.

Quick opened the score with one run in the bottom of the first inning off of starter Mike van den Berg. Darryl Williams led off with a single, stole second base and moved to third base when an error was made on a grounder by Emeron Lourens. After the latter had also stolen base, the two runners were unable to advance on a grounder by Alex Madera. But they did get into motion on a grounder towards short by Jorge Hernandez Morantes. However, Lourens was eliminated at third base, but Williams scored.

Quick-starter Jack Wagner held Storks scoreless in the first two at bats, but then gave up three runs in the top of the third. Khirstan Gibbs led off with a double, then Twan Naessens walked. The latter was the starting pitcher in yesterday's game, today he was the designated hitter. The two runners scored when Jurian Hansen followed with a double. Hansen himself scored on a single by Edvin Yrausquin.

But just as in yesterday's game, the lead was brief for Storks, as Quick answered with three runs of its own in the bottom of the third. Amar van Zwieten led off with a double, who then stayed at second on a comeback infield-hit by Darryl Williams. An error on a hit by Emeron Lourens loaded the bases. Alex Madera followed with a runscoring single, then two more runs were added on grounders by Jorge Hernandez Morantes and Ibrahin Redan to put Quick ahead, 4-3.

From the fourth inning on, Quick took more distance. The team first added two more runs with two outs in the fourth without hitting a basehit. Pascal Zegwaard and Marvin Jakobus opened with walks, then advanced on a grounder by Amar van Zwieten. The second out was then recorded when Zegwaard tried to score on a grounder by Darryl Williams. Thereafter, the bases got loaded when Emeron Lourens walked. Next, a run was scored when Alex Madera also walked, then a wild pitch accounted for the second run.

An attempt to add another run in the fifth failed. Ibrahin Redan led off with a single and stole second base. He then tried to score on a single by Rodney Daal, but was eliminated at the plate. That also led to a pitching-change, as Obed Hernandez took over from Mike van den Berg. He got a force play-grounder and flyout and so, Daal stranded on second base.

Quick was more successful in the sixth. Alden Stacie then led off with a walk, stole second and moved to third base on a grounder by Emeron Lourens. Shortly thereafter, Stacie scored on a sacrifice fly by Alex Madera to make it a 7-3 score in favor of the home-team.

After being retired in order in the seventh, Quick scored its eighth run in the bottom of the eighth. Marvin Jakobus led off with a single, moved into scoring position on a passed ball, reached third base on a grounder by Amar van Zwieten and scored on a grounder by Alden Stacie.

Storks was kept scoreless by the Quick-pitching for five innings after the team had scored in the third inning. In those five at bats, Storks got only two baserunners. In the fifth, Twan Naessens led off with a walk, but was eliminated in a double play. With one out in the seventh, off of new pitcher Stijn Bruins Slot, Shurensley Daantji reached on a bunt-single, but was left behind on first base.

Trailing 8-3, Storks scored its fourth run in the top of the ninth off of new pitcher Deef van Leersum. Edvin Yrausquin led off with a double and advanced on a single by Sigmar Eustacia. When he was forced out on a grounder by Kelvin Knape, Yrausquin scored. But that was to be it for Storks.
