Pilot-Pool: RCH-Pinguïns wins to avoid sweep vs. second team Twins Oosterhout
Nederlands

OOSTERHOUT (Neth.) - RCH Memorie Sieraden won 12-7 on Sunday (August 28) to avoid a sweep against the second team of Twins Oosterhout in the Major League/First Division Pilot-Pool. In the first two games, Twins won 6-4 and 10-6.

Initially, it appeared that Twins was en route to its third win in the series, as it scored seven runs in the first inning. But the team was kept scoreless thereafter, RCH came back in the fifth and decided the game in the eighth and ninth at bat.

Today, two other series in this Pool also were concluded.

Quick Amersfoort outscored Silicon Storks 8-4 to complete a 3-game sweep. On Thursday, Quick won the first game with a 17-4 score, then nipped Storks 10-9 on Saturday.

UVV also recorded a sweep against Sparks Haarlem. After winning 10-4 on Thursday and 18-8 on Saturday, UVV today shutout Sparks with an 11-0 score.

(August 28)

The second team of Twins Oosterhout scored seven runs in the bottom of the first inning. With that, the team appeared to be en route to a sweep against RCH-Pinguïns. But Twins was unable to hold onto the early lead and was kept scoreless in the remainder of the game. The visitors narrowed the deficit to 7-6, then took over the lead in the eighth and added some insurance runs in the ninth.

Twins inserted seven pitchers in this game, who gave up eight basehits, only two more than the two RCH-pitchers gave up. However, the seven Twins-pichers walked sixteen batters combined. By the way, the two RCH-pitchers walked eleven batters. With that, there were 27 walks in this game!

In the top of the first inning, RCH got its first four batters on base, but there was also a very rare double play. Twins-starter Tobias Cox walked Daan Groenewoud and Leandro Anasagasti. Next batter Jesse Aussems then grounded the ball throught the leftside of the infield. What happened then was a force play double play that most had never seen before, as it was very, very rare. On the hit, the other runners took off. Twins-leftfielder Dick van Heesch was playing close behind the infield and after he had fielded the ball, he got it in time at third base, where Groenewoud was forced out. Hereafter, third baseman Berend Ruben threw the ball to second baseman Gijs van Zalingen, which also was in time to eliminate Anasagasti to complete a 7-5-4 double play! Oh, Aussems of course reached first on a fielder's choice. He would advance to third base on a following double by Tilsaimy Melfor, but they would be left behind.

After the rare grounded-into-double-play highlighted the top of the first inning, the Twins-offense scored seven runs in its first at bat off of RCH-starter Finn Kragt. All runs were scored with two outs! Due to an error, five of the runs were unearned. Kragt walked lead-off hitter Marnix Ruben, who stole second base with one out and scored the first run when Jerzy van Gool homered with two outs. Hereafter, Berend Ruben singled, advanced on a wild pitch and moved to third base when an error was made on a grounder by Matthew Joossens, which would have been the third out. But now, Twins would add five more runs. First, Ben van Dulken delivered a runscoring single, then the bases got loaded when Dick van Heesch walked. When Kragt also walked next batter Bo Kops, a run was scored. Another run was scored when Marnix Ruben also walked and Gijs van Zalingen followed with a 2-run single to put the home-team ahead, 7-0.

Remarkably enough, Twins was kept scoreless in the remainder of the game. The team did get some runners in scoring positon, but the RCH-defense turned three double plays. From the second inning on, Twins left seven runners behind, six of them in scoring position.

RCH-Pinguïns got one run back in the top of the third. Daan Groenewoud led off with a single. With one out, Jesse Aussems walked and with two outs, the bases got loaded when Yurdion Martie also walked. Another walk followed, this time for Ties van der Beeke. This not only led to a run, but also a pitching change. Esra van den Berg took over and got an inning-ending flyout, meaning three runners were left behind.

RCH also stranded three runners in the fourth. With two outs, Van de Berg got the bases loaded when he walked Daan Groenewoud, Leandro Anasagasti and Jesse Aussems. This time, a force play ended the at bat.

RCH was more successful in the top of the fifth, as five runs were scored off of three pitchers. The first seven batters all reached base. The bases got loaded when Yurdion Martie led off with a walk, Ties van der Beeke reached on an error and Teun van der Meer also walked. With three runners on base, Thijs Rijpstra became the new pitcher for Twins. He walked pinch-hitter Jeremy Young, resulting in a run, then threw a wild pitch, resulting in another run. Hereafter, Van der Meer was eliminated at the plate on a fielder's choice-grouder by Paris Aguilera Zayas. The bases got loaded again when Rijpstra walked Daan Groenewoud and the next run was scored when another walk followed for Leandro Anasagasti. That brought in the third pitcher in this inning. Lucas den Duijn took over. He got a flyout, but then gave up a 2-run single to Tilsaimy Melfor, who was eliminated when he tried to stretch it into a double, which ended the at bat. But RCH had narrowed the deficit to only 7-6.

After Lucas den Duijn had retired the side in the sixth, Jeffrey Levenstone became the fifth Twins-pitcher this afternoon when the seventh inning began. He would get one baserunner in the lone inning he pitched. With one out, he walked pinch-hitter Lars Werkman. With two outs, he moved to second base on a passed ball, but was left behind.

In the eighth, another pitcher took the mound, this time Marnix Ruben. In his previous two outings, the righthander had earned two saves, but today, he was credited with a Blown Save, as he gave up three runs, which gave RCH a 9-7 lead. All three runs were unearned, as the Twins-defense made three errors. Ruben got the bases loaded quickly. Jesse Aussems led off with his third walk in the game, then moved to third base when Ruben made a throwing error following a bunt-single by Tilsaimy Melfor. A walk for Yurdion Martie then loaded the bases. Ruben struckout the next batter, but then an error followed trying to force out Aussems at the plate on a grouder by Teun van der Meer and that tied the score. With the bases still loaded, another force play-grounder hit by Jeremy Young followed, but that also ended in an error, enabling Melfor and Martie to score and put RCH ahead, 9-7.

In the top of the ninth, Matthew Joossens was the seventh pitcher for Twins. He also gave up three runs, but these were all earned. Leandro Anasagasti led off with a double and scored on a single by Jesse Aussems. Tilsaimy Melfor followed with his fourth basehit in the game and a wild pitch gave RCH runners on second and third base. A grounder by Yurdion Martie and a single by Ties van der Beeke produced two more runs and lifted RCH's lead to 17-7.

After its productive first at bat, Twins got another runner in scoring position in the second. Jerzy van Gool led off with a single, but would be left behind on third base.

Twins was retired in order in the third, but got the bases loaded with one out in the fourth. With one out, Finn Kragt hit Thijmen Peters and Jerzy van Gool with a pitch, then walked Berend Ruben. However, Kragt then picked off Ruben at first base and the inning ended when second baseman Leandro Anasagasti caught a line drive from Matthew Joossens.

Twins got into scoring position again with two outs in the fifth. Kragt then walked both Bo Kops and Marnix Ruben, but a flyout ended the at bat.

With Twins still leading 7-6, Koen Werkman took over the RCH-pitching in the bottom of the sixth. The righthander got some baserunners, but he was supported with a double play in the sixth, seventh and eighth inning. In the bottom of the ninth, Twins got one more runner in scoring position. With one out, Berend Ruben walked, moved to second base on a grounder by Matthew Joossens and was able to reach third base on a wild pitch. But he stranded on third base, as a flyout ended the at bat and the game.
