Two No-Hitters on one evening; HCAW and DSS/Kinheim write history
Nederlands
BUSSUM / HEEMSTEDE (Neth.) -
Lars Huijer threw a 7-inning No-Hitter on Thursday-evening (April 20) for HCAW, which opened its 3-game series against Quick Amersfoort with a 10-0 shutout-victory.
Somewhat over an hour later, DSS/Kinheim completed a Combined No-Hitter in an 8-inning, 12-4 victory against RCH Memorie Sieraden.
This marks the first time in the history of the highest Dutch baseball-league that two No-Hitters are thrown on the same day.
At Bussum, when When the bottom of the seventh inning began, HCAW led only 4-0, but the home-team then rallied for six runs to reach the mercy-rule run-difference to end the game.
In the meantime, Huijer had kept Quick not only scoreless, but also hitless in his seven innings on the mound for HCAW.
The righthander barely missed a Perfect Game, as he got only one baserunner.
In the top of the fifth inning, Huijer walked lead-off hitter Ibrahin Redan, but he was then eliminated in a double play on a following grounder.
Huijer, who threw only 71 pitches, struckout nine batters.
HCAW had opened the score in the first inning on a double by Victor Draijer.
The team then added two runs in the second at bat and one more in the sixth, which were all the results of errors.
In the seventh inning, HCAW got the bases loaded quickly.
Two walks then accounted for the first two runs, followed by an RBI-grounder and a 2-run double by Bob van der Meer.
With runners on first and second base and only one out, a pitching change followed with HCAW leading 9-0.
Sander Crama entered the game and made his big league-debut.
With Delano Selassa in the batter's box, Crama's first delivery was low.
Before he could make his next delivery, Home Plate Umpire Roy van de Wateringen called a balk, which moved the runners to second and third base.
Crama's next delivery then ended in the ground and jumped over the catcher for a walk-off wild pitch.
For Lars Huijer, this is his second No-Hitter.
In 2019, almost exactly four years ago, he also threw a 7-inning No-Hitter when he played for Hoofddorp Pioniers against Storks.
This is HCAW's fourth No-Hitter in the highest league.
In 2001, Patrick de Lange threw the first one.
Then, in 2010, in the Play-Downs, it was Joey Eijpe, who threw a No-Hitter.
Last season, Dennis Burgersdijk gave up no hits in a 7-inning game.
Fun-fact, tonight's Home Plate Umpire Roy van de Wateringen also was behind the plate in the previous two No-Hitters of HCAW, thrown by Eijpe and Burgersdijk.
At Heemstede, three pitchers of DSS/Kinheim gave up four runs, but despite that, they kept RCH-Pinguïns hitless in a game that was halted after eight complete innings due to the 10:30 PM curfew-rule.
DSS/Kinheim led 8-0 when the bottom of the sixth inning began.
RCH-Pinguïns then managed to score four runs, but that was done without hitting a basehit off of three different pitchers!
There were four walks, a hit batter and two wild pitches.
RCH scored its first run on a wild pitch, the next one on a basesloaded walk, the third one on the second wild pitch and then the fourth on a groundout.
With that, the No-Hitter remained intact!
Starter Martijn Schoonderwoerd, who threw the first runscoring wild pitch, was relieved by Ben Neijndorff with one out and runners on first and second base.
He issued a basesloaded walk and uncorked the second runscoring wild pitch, then saw RCH scored another run on the grounder.
With an 8-4 lead, a runner on third base and two outs, Mathijs Oosterbeek became the third pitcher in this inning and got an inning-ending grounder.
In the seventh inning, Oosterbeek was supported with a double play.
The righthander retired the side in the eighth, closing with two strikeouts.
And that also ended the game.
This was the first No-Hitter in the big league for DSS/Kinheim.
The complete recaps will be added later.
