Netherlands Team also wins second game of Kingdom Series
Nederlands

SANTA CRUZ / ORANJESTAD (Aruba) - The Netherlands Baseball Team recorded its second victory of The Kingdom Series on Saturday (November 2), winning 6-2 against Curaçao. The Orange-squad opened the second edition of the event on Friday with a 10-3 win against host Aruba.

Earlier today, Aruba won 5-3 against Bonaire. With that score, the outcome for the Final was decided. As Bonaire also had lost its first game, the team was eliminated and therefore, Aruba and Curaçao were qualified for the Final. The Netherlands is not competing for a spot in the Final, as it considers the games played during the Kingdom Series as practice games to prepare for the upcoming Premier12. In that event, the Netherlands will play in the prelminary round in Mexico, beginning on November 9. The best two teams of the six-team pool will advance to the Super Round in Japan.

For opponent Curaçao, this is its third international tournament in a row. The team of Manager Hainley Statia first participated in the Serie Internacional in Montería (Colombia), which was a 3-game series against professional club Vaqueros de Montería (October 18-20). Hereafter, the team traveled to Nassau (Bahamas) for the Caribbean Baseball Cup (October 23-28), which was won by Curaçao. And next on the agenda for the Curaçao baseball team was The Kingdom Series on Aruba.

In April this year, the Federashon di Beisbol Korsou (FeBeKo) celebrated its 90th anniversary, as the governing body of Curaçao baseball was founded in 1934. Internationally, FeBeKo is known as CBF (Curaçao Baseball Federation).

Netherlands vs. Curaçao

On Saturday, both the Netherlands and Curaçao collected only five basehits. Four Curaçao-pitchers also walked nine batters and hit two. Four Orange-pitchers issued five walks, while another free pass occured on catcher's interference. Denzel Richardson hit the second Kingdom-homerun in two days after Jonathan Schoop had homered in the opener.

Both teams reached base in the first inning. Orange-starter Shairon Martis began with a strikeout, but then gave up an infield-hit to Phildrich Llewellyn, but he stranded on first base. In 2022, Llewellyn played in one regular season-game for HCAW in the Dutch big league to make him eligible for the postseason. He then re-joined the team for the Holland Series later that year, which was won by the Bussum-club. In 2013 and 2017, the outfielder played for the Netherlands Team during the practice-series in Arizona (USA), preceeding the World Baseball Classic, but was not on the final roster for the global tournament. Since 2019, Llewellyn plays in Germany after having played for Pirati dei Rimini in Italy the year before. In Germany, the outfielder played for Paderborn Untouchables in four seasons (2019-2022), then Bonn Capitals (2023) and Münich-Haar Disciples (this year).

For the Netherlands, Juremi Profar recorded an one-out single off of Curaçao-starter Joharvi Martinus, who was then supported with a double play.

Martis retired the side in the second inning. First baseman Eugene Helder made a nice play on a hard lead-off grounder by Jonathan Martijn and got the ball in time to Martis at first base. Martis struckout the next two batters.

The Netherlands opened the score in the bottom of the second inning with a 5-run rally on only two basehits. Those hits were recorded by the first and eighth (and final) batter in the inning. In between, there were three walks, a hit batter and three wild pitches. Denzel Richardson led off the at bat with a homerun. Hereafter, Ray-Patrick Didder walked. He moved into scoring position on a grounder by Sharlon Schoop, then advanced to third base on a wild pitch. With one out, the bases got loaded when Dayson Croes walked and Jair van Borkulo was hit by a pitch. Hereafter, debuting Donovan Antonia was called out on strikes, but with two outs, four more runs would be added. Didder first scored on a wild pitch and then, the bases got loaded again when Stijn van der Meer received the third walk in this inning. That led to a pitching-change. Lefthander Cedeon Langguth took over, but he uncorked a wild pitch that enabled Croes to score. Van Borkulo and Van der Meer, who also had advanced on the wild pitch, then both scored when Juremi Profar singled. He was eliminated trying to advance to second base, but when he was tagged, Van der Meer already had crossed home plate.

Trailing 5-0, Curaçao got one run back in the third. Ray Jackson Chirino led off with a walk, then next batter J'Rudjeanon Isenia was awarded first base on catcher's interference. Initially, Isenia was not in the announced starting line-up, as veteran Ulrich Snijders was orginally listed as ninth hitter in the batting order as starting catcher. Instead, Llewellyn, who was initially listed as rightfielder, was the catcher and Isenia played in rightfield. With two runners on base, a nice double play followed, initiated by Delano Selassa, who had just entered as new first baseman. With Chirino on third base, Phildrick Llewellyn walked and Ericson Leonora followed with a runscoring single. Leonora tried to advance on the throw to third base, but was eliminated second base, which ended the at bat.

In the bottom of the third inning, the Netherlands stranded two runners. With two outs, Ray-Patrick Didder and Sharlon Schoop both walked, but the inning then ended when Dayson Croes struckout.

After Shairon Martis had retired the side (two strikeouts), the Dutch offense got two more baserunners in its fourth at bat. With one out, Donovan Antonia walked, but moments later, he was eliminated at second base when he tried to advance in a wild pitch. Stijn van der Meer then also walked, but stranded on first base.

In the fifth inning, Eric Mendez Matos took over the Orange-pitching from Shairon Martis, who had reached his pitch-count for the day. With one out, Mendez got the bases loaded. He first walked Ray Jackson Chirino, then J'Rudjeanon Isenia and Kevin Josephina both reached on an infield-hit. The latter injured himself while running to first base and was replaced by pinch-runner Riordan Windster, who was forced out at second base on a grounder by Phildrick Llewellyn. But on this play, Chirino was able to score the second Curaçaon run. With runners at the corners, a flyout ended the at bat.

In the bottom of the fifth, the Netherlands again reached base off of Cedeon Langguth, who had thrown two scoreless innings. With one out, the lefthander gave up a double to Denzel Richardson, but then struckout Ray-Patrick Didder. That also brought out Curaçao Manager Hainley Statia, who brought in new pitcher Sedley Karel, who is one of the pitchers of Dutch big leaguer HCAW. On his first delivery, Sharlon Schoop singled, but a nice throw from rightfielder Phildrick Llewellyn led to the elimination of Richardson at plate.

In the top of the sixth inning, Scott Prins became the new Orange-pitcher, but on his first delivery, he was greeted with a line drive into left/centerfield by Mairoshendrick Martinus. He tried to stretch his double into triple, but thanks to a strong throw from centerfielder Ray-Patrick Didder, Martinus was eliminated at third base. A foul pop-fly and a strikeout followed.

The throw by Ddider avoided a possible run. Moments later, after three scoreless innings, the Netherlands did add a run in the bottom of the sixth. With one out, Sedley Karel ran into problems and got the bases loaded when he walked (HCAW-teammate) Jair van Borkulo, hit Donova Antonia with a pitch and also walked Stijn van der Meer. Karel was relieved by Marlison Brunken, who saw Juremi Profar hit a sacrifice fly that brought in Van Borkulo and made it a 6-2 score. A flyout ended the inning.

In the top of the seventh inning (which was the final at bat in this game), Jaydenn Estanista was on the mound for the Netherlands. He walked the first two batters he faced, Arjun Huerta and Ray Jackson Chirino, but a double play and a game-ending grounder followed.

Playing for the Netherlands in this game were:
Stijn van der Meer (SS, 0-for-1, run, 3 walks), Juremi Profar (DH, 2-for-3, 3 RBIs, sacrifice fly), Eugene Helder (1B, 0-for-1, GDP), Delano Selassa (1B, 0-for-3), Denzel Richardson (RF, 2-for-3, run, RBI, double, homerun), Ray-Patrick Didder (CF, 0-for-1, run, 2 walks, strikeout), Sharlon Schoop (3B, 1-for-2, walk), Dayson Croes (2B, 0-for-2, run, walk, strikeout), Jair van Borkulo (C, 0-for-1, 2 runs, walk, hit by pitch), Donovan Antonia (LF, 0-for-1, walk, hit by pitch, strikeout) and pitchers Shairon Martis, Eric Mendez Matos, Scott Prins and Jaydenn Estanista.
