Neptunus records two shutouts on Day 2 Urbanus Tournament
Nederlands

BUSSUM (Neth.) - On the second day of the 43rd edition of the annual In Memoriam Charles Urbanus Sr. Tournament three games were played on Saturday (April 5), which was a very sunny day. However, there sometimes also was a chilly wind, especially on the field.

Reigning Dutch champion Curaçao Neptunus and Kinheim came into action twice today. Neptunus began the day with a 4-0 shutout against Kinheim, then also held Amsterdam Pirates scoreless in the next game, winning 6-0.

In the third game of the day, Pirates outscored Kinheim, 6-1.

The tournament opened on Friday-evening with the game between HCAW and Amsterdam Pirates, which ended in a scoreless tie.

After today, Kinheim and Amsterdam Pirates are eliminated for first place. And that means that the winner of the game between Neptunus (which is in first place) and HCAW will be the tournament-winner. The game is the final game on Sunday. In case that game ends in a tie, Neptunus will be the winner.

According to the tournament-rules, a maximum of seven innings will be played in a game. No new inning will began after one hour and 50 minutes.

Curaçao Neptunus vs. Kinheim

In today's opening game, Neptunus shutout Kinheim 4-0. The Rotterdam-team collected nine basehits, including three doubles and a homerun. Kinheim was limited to only three basehits, one of them a double.

Kinheim got four baserunners in the game. Three of them came into scoring-position. The first of them was Amarensio Franka, who doubled with one out in the first inning off of Tom de Blok. Two flyouts followed.

Kinheim got two baserunners with two outs in the second off of De Blok. Jayvon Vicario and Ruben ter Beest then both singled. Newcomer Sander van der Meer followed with a line drive, but that was caught. Last year, Van der Meer played in the second team of Amsterdam Pirates.

De Blok struckout the side in the third inning.

Neptunus got its first baserunners in the bottom of the second off of Joris Meinsma. With one out, Kevin Dirksen and Sheadion Jamanika both walked. With two outs, the latter was forced out on a grounder by Bob van der Meer, who last year played for HCAW. After the season, he transfered to Neptunus, where he will play alongside his brother Stijn van der Meer.

Neptunus opened the score in the third. Den Seelbach led off with a walk. He advanced on a grrounder by Belgian Drew Janssen, who last year played for both Heidenheim Heideköpfe in Germany and Hoboken Pioneers in Belgium. Janssen then scored on a single by Stijn van der Meer, who moved into scoring-position on a following outfield-error. With two outs, Christian Diaz walked and Van der Meer advanced to third base on a passed ball, but the two Neptunian runners were left behind.

After Aaron de Groot had retired the side in the top of the fourth (two strikeouts), Neptunus added two runs in the bottom of the fourth. First, Sheadion Jamanika led off with a homerun. Hereafter, Finn Blokker took over the pitching from Joris Meinsma. He was greeted with a single by Yurdion Martie, but then was supported with a double play. With two outs, Den Seelbach singled and scored on a following double by Drew Janssen.

In the top of the fifth, Joost Terrpstra took over the Neptunus-pitching. He got only one baserunner (a walk) in the three innings he pitched and earned a save.

Neptunus scored its fourth run in the sixth. Bob van der Meer delivered an one-out double, advanced on a wild pitch and scored on a single by Den Seelbach.

Amsterdam Pirates vs. Curaçao Neptunus

In its second game today, Neptunus recorded another shutout, winning 6-0 against Amsterdam Pirates. Neptunus collected nine basehits, including two by rookie Drew Janssen, Christian Diaz and Yurdion Martie. Pirates-rookie Norangelo Jacobus got two of his team's five basehits.

After Neptunus had left a runner behind in the top of the first inning, Pirates came close to the opening-run in the home-half of the at bat. Newcomer Koen Werkman led of for Pirates with a double that didn't left the infield, as the ball dropped near first base, out of reach for an infielder. Moments later, Werkman advanced to third base on a grounder by Roelie Henrique. But hereafter, Werkman, who last year played for HCAW, came into rundown on a grounder to short by Luca Pastor and was eliminated.

In the top of the second inning, Neptunus struck with a 4-run rally on five hits off of starter Martijn Schoenderwoerd. With one out, Sheadion Jamanika doubled and newcomer Sem Kuijper (ex-DSS/Kinheim) singled. Both scored when Yurdion Martie followed with a double. Martie also is a newcomer in the Rotterdam-team. Last season, the catcher played for Amsterdam Pirates. After the season, he transfered to RCH-Pinguïns and as player of that team, he was a member of the Netherlands Team that traveled to Japan for a 2-game series against Samurai Japan in early March. However, in the following period, Martie moved from the Heemstede-team to Neptunus. With Martie on second base, next batter Mauricio Montenegro was hit by a pitch. With two outs, Neptunus got the bases loaded when Belgian Drew Janssen singled. When Christian Diaz followed with the next basehit, Martie and Montenegro both scored. A force play ended the at bat, but Neptunus led 4-0.

In the bottom of the second inning, Pirates got two baserunners off off starter Shairon Martis. With one out, Jorrit Penseel reached on an infield-hit and Norangelo Jacobus followed with a bunt-single. Martis struckout the next two batters. Pirates was unable to get into scoring-position again in the remainder of the game.

Neptunus added two more runs in the fourth inning off of new pitcher Scott Prins. With two outs, he walked Stijn van der Meer, who then scored on a double by Drew Janssen. Hereafter, Christian Diaz added another RBI-single to increase the lead to 6-0.

Kinheim vs. HCAW

In the final game today, HCAW outscored Kinheim 6-1. HCAW led only 2-1 after three innings and 3-1 after five at bats HCAW then took more distance via a run 3-run rally in the sixth inning.

HCAW collected 11 basehits, including three by Marnix Ruben. Kinheim recorded five hits, including two by Guus Toemen, who last season played for First Divisionist Jeka.

HCAW opened the score with two runs in the top of the first inning off of Kinheim-starter Tijn Fredrikze. Last year, the lefthander played for Curaçao Neptunus. He gave up lead-off singles to Marnix Ruben and Jeandro Tromp, then got the bases loaded when he walked Delano Selassa. A wild pitch then led to the first run. Fredrikze followed with a strikeout, but a sacrifice fly by newcomer Alex Madera then made it a 2-0 score. Last season, Madera played for Amsterdam Pirates.

Kinheim got one run back in the bottom of the first inning when Amarensio Franka homered with one out off of Nelmerson Angela. Like Madera, the lefthander transfered from Pirates to HCAW after last season. The run scored by Franka was to be the lone run for the Haarlem-team.

By the way, in the off-season, it was decided that the name of DSS/Kinheim was to be changed again into two separate names. Kinheim for the big league-team, DSS for the First Division-team. This year, Kinheim celebrates its 90th anniversary.

In the third inning, HCAW got another runner in scoring-position when newcomer Arthur Bonevacia doubled with one out, but he stranded on second base.

In the fourth, HCAW added a run off of new pitcher Tobias Imming. He gave up a lead-off single to Jesse Aussems, another newcomer in the Bussum-squad. Last year, Aussems and Bonevacia both played for Curaçao Neptunus. Aussems stole second base, advanced on an one-out flyout and went on to score on a single by Delano Selassa.

In the bottom of the fourth, Lorenzo Willem doubled for Kinheim with one out. Hereafter, former Neptunus-player Jayden Mohamed walked, but the inning ended when Guus Toemen grounded into a double play.

HCAW rallied for three more insurance runs in the top of the sixth off of Imming. With one out, Julian Goins doubled and scored on a single by Marnix Ruben. After the latter had stolen second and third base, Jeandro Tromp walked. Next, Ruben scored on a single by Delano Selassa and Tromp scored on a sacrifice fly by pinch-hitter Jair van Borkulo.
