ROTTERDAM (Neth.) - Amsterdam Pirates led 4-0 in the third inning and 5-2 in the fourth, then hold onto a 5-4 lead to defeat Sparta/Feyenoord on Saturday for its second exhibition win in a row.

Pirates opened the score in the first inning. Sparta/Feyenoord-starter Daan Baecke hit lead-off batter Björn Henrichs with a pitch, who then stole second and advanced on a throwing error. He scored on a one-out single by Tyson Arishenkoff.
In the second inning, Remco Draijer was on base with two outs when rookie Kevin Gerard produced an RBI-single.
Two runs were added in the third inning. Roderick Simon and Tyson Arishenkoff singled, then the first scored when pitcher Daan Baecke made a throwing error on a sac-bunt by Derrick Francisca. Moments later, Arishenkoff scored on a grounder by Fausto Alvarez to make it 4-0.

Sparta/Feyenoord also scored twice in its third inning. Pirates-starter Tom Stuifbergen gave up a lead-off single to rookie Sil Wagenaar, which was followed by a 2-run homerun by Marwin Kleinmoedig.
Pirates got one run back in the fourth inning when Remco Draijer walked and went on to score on a single by Björn Henrichs.
In the home fourth, Sparta/Feyenoord again used the long ball to score two runs. Robin Franken, who had taken over the pitching for Stuifbergen, gave up a lead-off infield-hit to Rutger Veugelers, who then scored on a 2-run homerun by Jeroen Hermans, who played for Pirates the last two seasons.
Both teams didn't score in the last three innings of the 7-inning game. Sparta/Feyenoord-rookie Sander Klop gave up only one hit in these innings in relief of Baecke.

Huge win Pioniers at Almere

ALMERE (Neth.) - Konica Minolta Pioniers collected 22 basehits and registered a huge 21-3 victory vs. Instant Holland Almere '90 on Saturday.
Pioniers scored 15 runs, including seven on three homeruns, in the three middle innings off two pitchers.

Pioniers scored its first two runs in the third inning off starter Erik Remmerswaal, who made his first exhibition appearance. In the inning, Michael Duursma was hit by a pitch. After had stolen second base, he scored on a double by Norbert Lokhorst. Moments later, Lokhorst scored when Almere's third baseman Ivanon Coffie made an error on a grounder by Dè Flanegin. Coffie, who arrived late last week, committed four errors in his first exhibition game of the season for Almere. Early March, Coffie participated with the Dutch team in the World Baseball Classic. Newly acquired outfielder Gene Kingsale also has arrived in Almere, but didn't play yet.
Pioniers then added four runs in the fourth inning off Nick Veltkamp, who had taken over for Remmerswaal. Two of the runs were scored on a homerun by Lars Koehorst.

Trailing 6-0, Almere came back with three runs in the home fourth. Bryan Engelhardt led off with a homerun. After Ivanon Coffie flied out, Sidney Ensermo also homered. Next, Jason Halman singled and scored on a single by rookie Ferd van Stekelenburg.
But that was all for Almere, while Pioniers continued scoring. In the fifth inning, Pioniers rallied for six runs, including two on a homerun by Norbert Lokhorst, who went 5-for-6, scored four runs and had five RBI's.
In the sixth inning, when Jerry Breek became the third Almere-pitcher, Pioniers scored five more runs. In this at bat, Jaïr Roseburg hit a 3-run homerun.
Pioniers increased its lead even more by adding two runs in both the seventh and eighth inning to make it 21-3.
While Pioniers led 19-3 after the seventh inning, the 10-run difference mercy-rule was not used, as it was agreed to play nine innings.

Kinheim opens tournament with win

NIJMEGEN (Neth.) - Corendon Kinheim opened the 18th edition of the annual Jan van de Vegte Memorial Tournament in Nijmegen on Saturday-morning with an 8-5 win vs. organizing club De Hazenkamp.

Kinheim started with rookie Jean-Paul Gulinck, whose hair was shaved the day before by his teammates. In his first appearance for the big league-squad, the lefthander walked his first batter, but after a force play-grounder, he came out of the inning with a strikeout and a comeback-grounder. In the second inning, Gulinck (who last season threw a No-Hitter in the First Division) gave up a lead-off double to Dylan Kamoen, but again he came out of the at bat unharmed. In the third inning, he gave up his first and only run. With one out, singles by Bas Beuker and Roy Kamoen, a wild pitch and a grounder gave De Hazenkamp its first run, but at that moment Kinheim already was leading 4-0.

Kinheim opened the first inning with a double by René Cremer. After Dirk van 't Klooster singled, Cremer was thrown out at home on a grounder to third by Danny Rombley. Van 't Klooster then scored the opening run on a double by Tjerk Smeets.
Kinheim added three runs in the second inning. With one out, Floris Morang singled and Denny Beljaards walked. After the two advanced on a double steal, René Cremer produced a sac-fly, followed by a runscoring infield-hit by Dirk van 't Klooster.
Leading 4-1, Kinheim rallied for four runs in the fourth inning. Floris Morang (infield-hit) and Denny Beljaards (single) were on base with one out, when Dirk van 't Klooster (3-for-3) hit a 2-run double. The lead was increased to 8-1 when, with two outs, Tjerk Smeets hit a 2-run homerun. The next three batters were then walked, but al three were left behind, as Floris Morang flied out to end the inning.

In the home fourth, Jimmy van der Veldt took over the pitching for Jean-Paul Gulinck and gave up four unearned runs. Lead-off hitter Mark Flink reached base on a throwing error by short stop René Cremer. The bases were loaded when van der Veldt walked the next two batters. After a strikeout, Steffan Vos singled in a run. With two outs, another run was scored on an infield-hit by Roy Kamoen, followed by a 2-run double by Wilvin Cespedes. The inning then ended on a flyout.
De Hazenkamp couldn't add more runs, as the tournament time-limit (two hours) was reached and the game ended after four innings.

HCAW escapes loss vs. Hazenkamp

NIJMEGEN (Neth.) - Defending tournament champion Mr. Cocker HCAW escaped a loss vs. host De Hazenkamp in Game Two of the Jan van de Vegte Memorial Tournament on Saturday. Trailing 2-1 after the first inning, HCAW ran behind even more when De Hazenkamp scored five runs on three homeruns in the fourth inning. But in the home fourth, HCAW came back, scored seven runs and went on to win 11-7.

HCAW-starter Jos de Jong had a tough outing, as he gave up all seven runs scored by De Hazenkamp. In the first inning, the Third Division-team from Nijmegen took a 2-0 lead. De Jong walked the first two batters he faced, Steffan Vos and Roy Kamoen, but then he appeared to get out of the inning with a strikeout and a groundout. But then Mark Schonenberg hit a 2-run single to give De Hazenkamp its early lead.
HCAW answered with one run in the home first. With one out, Martijn Meeuwis singled and stole second, then scored on a 2-out single by Sidney de Jong, but then Hazenkamp-starter Robbert Vos retired the next seven batters in a row.

Jos de Jong initially also recovered and also retired seven batters in a row, before ranning into prblems in the fourth inning. In that at bat, he first gave up a lead-off homerun to Mark Schonenberg, then a single to Bas Langenhuizen, which was followed by a 2-run homerun by Wilvin Cespedes. De Jong then struckout the next batter, but the inning wasn't over yet. Next, Bas Timmer singled and scored when Steffan Vos also homered to lift the score to 7-1. De Jong was relieved by Kevin Roovers, who closed the inning with a grounder and a strikeout. In the fifth inning, Roovers retired the side and went on to become the winning pitcher.

HCAW then turned the game around in its fourth at bat by scoring seven runs. The bases were loaded by Bart Gabriëls (infield-hit), Sidney de Jong (single) and Nick Makkinje (walk) when Dimitri Leon received a walk to bring in an automatic run. Next, two runs were scored on a single by Bas de Jong, followed by an RBI-double by Nick Fridsma. Sacrifice flies by Ronald Jaarsma and Martijn Meeuwis tied the score, 7-7. With two outs, Gino Henson singled and stole second, then scored the go-ahead run on a single by Bart Gabriëls, before the inning ended with a groundout.
In the fifth inning, off new pitcher Mark Flink, HCAW added three runs on a 2-run double by Ronald Jaarsma and an RBI-single by Gino Henson to win 11-7.

NIJMEGEN (Neth.) - The first day of the Jan van de Vegte Memorial Tournament ended Saturday-afternoon in heavy rain. But despite that, the game between ADO and Corendon Kinheim could be completed and ended in a 2-2 tie.

Kinheim got a chance to break open the game in the second inning when it got the bases loaded with two outs, without hitting a basehit. After two groundouts, ADO's rookie starter Jurrian Koks hit Roel Koolen and Robin Longhurst with a pitch, then walked Wouter Heemskerk to load the bases. But then, the inning ended when Denny Beljaards grounded into a force play.
In the home second, ADO's James Rutherford singled, then stole both second and third, but stranded, as the next two batters were retired.

Kinheim opened the score in the third inning. With two outs, Danny Rombley reached on an infield-hit, then scored all the way from first base when ADO-short stop Shurty Tremus made a throwing error on a grounder by Tjerk Smeets.
Kinheim doubled its lead in the fifth inning. Denny Beljaards led off with a walk, then advanced on a sac-bunt by René Cremer and a wild pitch. After Dirk van 't Klooster walked, Beljaards scored on a single by Danny Rombley. Kinheim loaded the bases when Tjerk Smeets also singled, but then the inning ended when Edward Illidge grounded into a double play.

In the home fifth, with two outs, Kinheim-starter Patrick Beljaards was relieved by Jeffrey Verbij, who had problems with his control and gave up two runs, resulting in a tie score. Verbij was greeted with singles by Berry van Driel and Shurty Tremus (infield-hit), then walked Maikel Benner to load the bases. Next, Verbij walked Marvin Bleij and hit Harvey Monte with a pitch to tie the score, before the inning ended on a flyout by Percy Isenia.
Both teams got a runner on second base in the sixth inning, but no more runs were added.
