BRASSCHAAT (Belgium) - Sparta/Feyenoord, which played its first and last game 13 days ago, today played two games in the Belgian city of Brasschaat, near Antwerp. Initially, they were to play vs. DOOR Neptunus, which returned from Cuba yesterday. As today's game vs. Neptunus was canceled, Sparta/Feyenoord went to Belgium and played two 5-inning games against Dutch First Divisionist Euro Stars and host Brasschaat Braves. In the first game, Sparta/Feyenoord lost 3-2.
Sparta/Feyenoord immediately faced an 1-0 deficit when starting pitcher Tim Roodenburg gave up a lead-off homerun in the first inning, then gave up two more runs in the next at bat.
After the homerun, two basehits and a hits batter loaded the bases, but Roodenburg was then supported with a double play to end the inning.
In the second at bat, Roodenburg hit lead-off batter Marcel Buurman with a pitch, then gave up a single to Stephan Venema.
After the two advanced on a sac-bunt and the bases were loaded with a walk, a grounder by Jeffrey Sprott and a single by Rutger Veugelers gave Euro Stars a 3-0 lead.
Euro Stars, who has quite a few former Dutch big leaguers on its roster, was unable to add more hits and hits in the next three innings off relievers Rudy Seebus and rookie Berry van Donselaar.
Sparta/Feyenoord got two runners in both the first and second inning, but stranded two in the first and was the victim of a double play in the second.
The Rotterdam-squad scored their two runs in the fourth.
With two outs, Edison Bito walked, then Orson Slaats and Sape Wagenaar singled to load the bases.
Bito and Slaats then scored on two consecutive wild pitches, but Sparta/Feyenoord was unable to add more runs.
