Sparks Haarlem wins Jan de Wit Tournament
Oolders Omaco Sparks Haarlem on Sunday won the 24th edition of the annual Jan de Wit Tournament by shutting out Twins in the final of the event on Sunday, April 10.
A week earlier, Sparks Haarlem was shutout itself 2-0 by Iber Lengua Terrasvogels in the final of the Mastenbroek Tournament in Enschede.
The Jan de Wit Tournament was the last preparation for the participating big league-teams for the upcoming season, which opens next Saturday.
Dutch champion Sparks Haarlem remained unbeaten in the event.
In the preliminary round, the team won its three games, beating organisor Olympia Haarlem (10-3) on Friday, then Tex Town Tigers (13-0) and Twins (6-1) on Saturday.
On Sunday, Sparks Haarlem shutout Alcmaria Victrix 7-0 in the semi-final.
On the other hand, Twins was winless on Saturday, losing all three games in their pool vs. Tex Town Tigers (6-3), Olympia Haarlem (5-2) and Sparks Haarlem (6-1).
But on Sunday, Twins defeated Centrals 6-5 in nine innings in the qualifying round, then defeated Olympia Haarlem 7-4 in the semi-final to reach the final and face Sparks Haarlem again.
In the final, Sparks Haarlem took a quick 12-0 lead in the game, which was stopped after three innings.

When the new season opens next Saturday, Sparks Haarlem has the weekend off.
The champion initially was to play vs. Euro Stars, but that team witdraw from the big league early March.
Alcmaria Victrix will make its comeback in the big league on Saturday playing at Olympia Haarlem.
Centrals opens at home in De Bilt vs. Twins.
Iber Lengua Terrasvogels has two double-headers coming weekend on its home field in Santpoort.
On Saturday, they meet Tex Town Tigers, then hosts Centrals on Sunday in a double-header that was moved to this date to make room in August when Terrasvogels participates in the European Cup Winners Cup Tournament in Italy.
All double-headers start at 2:00 PM.
