Dutch Under-22 Team has good start on European Championship

PARDUBICE (Czech Republic) - The Netherlands Under-22 Softball Team has a good start at the European Under-22 Championship, which went underway last Monday (July 4) in the Czech city of Pardubice.

On the first three days of competition, the Orange squad registered four victories and is one of two teams that is still unbeaten. The other team without a loss is Russia, which also won four games. The Dutch Team, which is led by Head Coach Mary-Ann Hatt, meets the Russian squad on Thursday-afternoon.

The Orange squad opened the event on Monday with two victories. In its first game, the Netherlands shutout Greece with a 15-0 score in three innings. The squad closed the first day with a big 21-7 victory in five innings against host Czech Republic.

On Tuesday, the Dutch Team registered another 15-0 shutout-win, this time against Lithuania.

The Dutch Team won its fourth game on Wednesday, beating Slovakia, 8-1.

Netherlands vs Greece

In the opener against Greece, the Dutch Team won 15-0 on twelve basehits, including two by Laura Wissink, Rachel van Veen and Lizzie Clarijs. Wissink batted in three runs, while Isa Los scored three runs.

The Orange Team reached the 15--run difference with two outs in the botom of the third inning.

Pitchers Lisa Hop and Cheyenne Scheffer combined on a No-Hitter. Hop struckout three batters in two innings, then Scheffer threw the third inning for the Dutch Team.

The Orange squad opened the score with four runs in the first at bat. Wies Ligtvoet led off with a bunt-single. With one out, Manoa Weijgertse and Laura Wissink hit back-to-back doubles, then Isa Los followed with a triple.

Hereafter, a rally for six more runs followed in the next inning, two of which were scored on a single by Laura Wissink. Five were then added in the third and final inning of this mercy-rule game.



Czech Republic vs. Netherlands

In the evening, the Dutch Team collected 18 basehits, including four by Manoa Weijgertse, while Wies Ligtvoet, Annemiek Jansen, Laura Wissink and Rachel van Veen each hit three hits. Jansen and Van Veen batted in five runs, Wissink batted in four. Ligtvoet, Weijgertse and Wissink all scored four runs. Wissink and Van Veen both homered.

The Netherlands scored eleven runs in the first three innings, then the Czechs scored five in the bottom of the third inning. Four Orange-runs were added in the fourth, then six more were scored in the fifth at bat.

In the second inning, Rachel van Veen batted in three runs with a baseclearing double. In the 4-run third inning, two runs were scored on the homerun by Laura Wissink. The 6-run rally in the fifth inning began with a lead-off homerun by Rachel van Veen.

Daniëlle ten Donkelaar started for the Orange and threw the first 2 1/3 inning, then Mandy van der Maas completed the 5-inning game.

On Tuesday, the Dutch Team collected ten basehits, including three by Isa Los, who homered and also batted in three runs. Wies Ligtvoet hit a grand slam homerun.

This game also lasted only three innings. After scoring twice in the first at bat, the Orange squad scored five runs in the second, then rallied for eight runs in the bottom of the third inning. The 15-run difference was reached with one out.

The highlight of the game came in the second inning. Eva van Knegsel then led off with a walk and both Rhowan Stuart and Onaisha Franka both singled to load the bases. Hereafter, Wies Ligtvoet connected well and hit a grand slam homerun.

A 3-run homerun by Isa Los contributed to the big rally in the third inning.

Cheyenne Scheffer went the distance for the Dutch Team and gave up only one basehit.



Netherlands vs. Slovakia

The Netherlands scored three runs in both the first and second inning on Wednesday en route to a comfortable win against Slovakia.

In this game, the Dutch offense produced nine basehits, including three by Manoa Weijgertse, which all were doubles. She also scored scored three runs and batted in three, making her responsible for six of the eight runs the team scored.

In the first inning, Wies Ligtvoet led off with a triple and went on to score the first run on the first double by Manoa Weijgertse. She then added a 2-run double in the second at bat.

Lisa Hop threw a complete game for the Dutch Team and gave up only five hits.
