Win and rainout for Dutch Team in Oklahoma City
Nederlands

OKLAHOMA CITY, Oklahoma (USA) - The Netherlands National Softball Team had two games scheduled on Friday (July 8) on Day 4 of the eleventh edition of the World Cup of Softball in Oklahoma City. The Orange squad shutout the Philippines 6-0 in its first game. Hereafter, the following game against China was stopped in the bottom of the third inning due to lightning, which was followed by heavy rain.

It was another busy day at the ASA Hall of Fame complex in Oklahoma City with twelve games being scheduled. Six in the main stadium, the other six on Field 3.

However, weather conditions disrupted today's schedule, as it also rained in the morning. Because of this, the opening game at Field 3 between Canada and México was stopped in the third inning with the Mexicans leading 1-0. After a long delay, the games resumed and Canada went on to win 4-1. At the same time, the game between Puerto Rico and the Czech Republic, which was to be played in OGE Energy Field, didn't even start and was cancelled. A make-up time for this game has not been announced.

The Czechs stayed at the site and then did play their next scheduled game against New Zealand. To make room in the schedule, the next game at Field 3, which was to be played between the Philippines and Venezuela was moved to Saturday. With that, the first game today of the Orange squad against the Philippines could have started around its original scheduled time of 1 PM. However, there was some miscommunication and so, the game went underway 40 minutes later.

The Dutch Team went on to win 6-0, but hereafter, the weather conditions struck again, while the organization monitored the radar images of the weather conditions. After having played 55 minutes, Home Plate Umpire Don Alexander was instructed to halt the game of the Orange squad against China in the bottom of the third inning due to lightning with an 1-0 lead for the Asian squad. At the same time, the match-up between Japan and Canada in the main stadium was halted in the fifth inning with a 6-2 lead for Japan.

Everyone had to take shelter due to heavy thunderstorms and lightning in the area. It is not the first time that the tournament experienced this kind of weather, as severe thunderstorms and tornado's hit Oklahoma annually. When the Dutch Team participated in the event for the first time in 2009, a heavy hail/thunder/lightning-storm struck, but after a delay, the games could be played. Six players of the current team know from experience how heavy the lightning and rain can be, as they were with the Orange squad during the 2009 tournament, being Virginie Anneveld, Anne Blaauwgeers, Rebecca Soumeru, Karin Tuk, Chantal Versluis and Britt Vonk. They all now participate in their third World Cup of Softball. The Dutch Team also was in Oklahoma City in 2012.

The remainder of today's schedule was cancelled. The Dutch Team will resume its game against China early Saturday-morning, starting at 8:30 AM (3:30 PM Dutch time). Later in the day, the Orange squad then will play its regular scheduled two games, meeting the USA at 2:30 PM (9:30 PM Dutch) and Puerto Rico at 7 PM (2 AM Sunday, Dutch). Japan and Canada also will resume their game on Saturday-morning.

Philippines vs. Netherlands

In what was only the second game in history between the Netherlands and the Philippines, the Orange squad took an early 3-0 lead in the first inning. Hereafter, three more were added in the next four at bats.

The Dutch Team collected 12 basehits, including three by Jessie van Aalst, who was responsible for four of the six runs, as she scored twice and batted in two.

In the first inning, Britt Vonk led off with an infield-hit. Hereafter, Suka Van Gurp popped up in the infield, but the ball landed between four infielders and so, she also reached first base with an infield-hit. A double-steal followed, then both runners scored on a double by Jessie van Aalst. Next batter Maxime van Dalen also delivered a single, which brought in the third run.

The Dutch Team added its fourth run in the second inning. With one out, Damishah Charles doubled and advanced to third base when an error followed. She then scored on a single by Britt Vonk, who went on to steal second base again. Hereafter, Suka Van Gurp lined the ball into short rightfield, where it appeared to drop and so, Vonk took off and went on rounding third base. However, the Philippine rightfielder reached, made a nice catch and completed a double play.

The lead was raised to 5-0 in the third at bat. Jessie van Aalst led off with a single, then Maxime van Dalen was hit by a pitch. Virginie Anneveld followed with a double, which led to the run and a pitching change. With runners on second and third base, the next three batters were retired.

After a scoreless fourth inning, the sixth Orange-run was scored in the fifth. With two outs, Dinet Oosting doubled down the leftfield-line and scored on a following single by Chantal Versluis.

Eva Voortman started for the Dutch Team and gave up only three basehits in the five innings she threw, while striking out nine batters. The lefthander allowed only one runner to reach second base. Two Philippine runners were caught stealing.

Mariëlle Vleugels threw the final two innings for the Orange. She retired the side in the sixth, then gave up a lead-off single in the seventh and hit the next batter with a pitch. With one out, a pop-fly ended in an game-ending double play.
