Talent Team Holland opens Indoor Cup with big win

SCHIEDAM (Neth.) - The 16th edition of the annual Indoor Cup went underway on Friday-evening (January 15) at the Margriet Hall, its familiar site in the city of Schiedam. In the weekend, games also are played in the nearby Groenoord Hall.

A total of 16 teams participates in the international event, divided over four groups. As always, six teams are coming from the USA, being Arsenal, Avengers, Chaos, Destroyers, Impact and Velocity. They are joined by Joudrs Praha (Czech Republic), Team France and Team Great Britain, as well as seven teams coming from host The Netherlands, Birds, Euro Stars, Gryphons, Roef!, Talent Team Holland Under 22, Terrasvogels and Twins.

After the first two games were played on Friday-evening, the tournament was offiially opened. During the Opening Ceremony, with all teams present, Kirt Whiteside, who created the event, addressed the players, coaches and officials.

In its first game, Talent Team Holland opened the event with an 8-1 win.

Later in the evening, Twins won 5-4 vs. Birds, which this year will make its debut in the Silver League. The first day of the event ended with victories for Euro Stars and Roef!.

Talent Team Holland U22 vs. Avengers United
Talent Team Holland opened the event with a big 8-1 win against Avengers in Pool A. The Dutch squad rallied for four runs in both the first and second at bat to set the tone early. The team collected 11 basehits, including three by Brenda Beers, who last year was the team's leading hitter in the regular Golden League-competition. In December, she won the Bep van Beijmerwerdt Trophy for most talented youthplayer.

In the first inning, Brenda Beers led off with a single and Damishah Charles followed with a double. With one out, they scored on bunt-singles by Laura Wissink and Isa Los. An error accounted for the next run, then a bunt-single by Jenny Kinburn made it 4-0.

After Avengers had scored a run in the top of the second, the Dutch team again scored four runs, this time with two outs. Brenda Beers registered two basehits in this at bat. She led off with a single, but then Damishah Charles grounded into a double play. Mariëlle Vleugels then singled and went on to score on a single by Laura Wissink. Hereafter, Isa Los reached on an error and Annemiek Jansen followed with a 2-run double, then later scored herself on the second basehit in the inning by Beers.




Arsenal United vs. Velocity United
In the second opening-game of the evening, two American teams faced each other in Pool B. Velocity won 3-2 vs. Arsenal.

Velocity scored twice in the second inning on four basehits. Cassidy Rowe led off with a single, then scored on an one-out single by Makayla Stoner. Hereafter, Alyssa Blake doubled and Kirsten McLeod followed with a runscoring single to make it 2-0. The team added another run in the third at bat on an error.

Trailing 3-0, Arsenal scored its first run in the bottom of the third inning on a grounder by Ariel Linberger. They then narrowed the deficit to 3-2 in the next at bat on a basesloaded walk by Alyssa Nehlen, but were unable to add more runs.

Velocity registered nine basehits, while Arsenal had nine, both hit by Nicole Ferraro.




Chaos United vs. Destoyers United
In another match-between two American teams, Destroyers win 1-0 vs. Chaos in Pool D.

The lone run in the game was scored in the top of the fourth inning. With one out, Lindsey Nunamaker singled and later scored on an error.

Chaos stranded six runners, two in each of the last three at bats of the 5-inning game.




Birds vs. Twins
In the second game of Pool B, Twins rallied for five runs in the second inning and went on to win 5-4 vs. Birds.

Initially, Birds took an 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning when Dayenne Sluijter led off with a single and scored on a 2-out single by Fleur Bos.

Twins answered with a 5-run rally in the top of the second inning on four basehits. Lead-off hitter Minke Blok was hit by a pitch, then no outs were made on a grounder by Michelle van Bodegom. With one out, a single by Imane Allou Issa tied the score. With two outs, singles by Sophie Bugter, Sandy Lauwers and Michelle van Bodegom, plus an error, brought in the next four runs.

Hereafter, Twins was held scoreless in the remainder of the game by pitchers Lisa Hop and Kelsey Huijzers.

Birds answered with three runs in the bottom of the third inning to narrow the deficit to 5-4. With one out, Celine Janssens singled and scored on a double by Anne Ketelaar. A single by Noa Amirotto and an error made it 5-4, which also would be the final score.

Roef! vs. Joudrs Praha
The opening game in Pool C ended in a 5-2 win for Roef! against Joudrs Praha. The Czechs came alongside in the top of the fourth inning, but as that inning was not completed before the official game-time expired, the runs are not counting in the final score. And with that, Roef! won 5-2.

Roef! rallied for four runs with two outs in the second inning. With one out, Sophie Mollee reached on an error, Naftely Pietersz reached on a bunt-single and Shauni Thys walked to load the bases. Hereafter, a force out at home followed on a grounder by Ilse van Kerkoerle, but then Wies Ligtvoet cleared the bases with a 3-run double and later scored herself on a wild pitch.

The Czechs got two runs back in the top of the third inning via a basesloaded walk for Apolena Vyborna and a wild pitch, but a double play ended the at bat.

Roef! added an insurance run in the bottom of the third. With one out, Sophie Mollee singled and scored on a double by Naftely Pietersz to make it 5-2.

In the top of the fourth inning, two grounders and a walk gave Joudrs three runs to tie the score, but moments later, the game ended as the time had expired. With that, the score after three complete innings became the final score.

Euro Stars vs. Impact United
In the opener of Pool C, Euro Stars won 7-2 vs. the American squad of Impact.

Euro Stars trailed 1-0 after the first inning, but then scored three runs in the second at bat. Britt Amersfoort and Onaisha Franka both walked and both got into scoring position after stealing the next bases. A grounder by Eliza van 't Zelfde then tied the score. Hereafter, a line drive single by Davinia de Kwant and an error gave Euro Stars a 3-1 lead.

Impact got one run back, but Euro Stars scored another one of its own in the second inning. This time, Britt Amersfoort walked with one out and scored when Eliza van 't Zelfde reached on an error with two outs.

Euro Stars then scored its fifth run in the third at bat. Anna Prins led off with a single and later scored on a nice squeeze bunt-single by Renske Jansen.

The final two runs were added in the fourth inning. With two outs, Eliza van 't Zelfde singled and pinch-hitter Manon Hogenes walked, then both scored on a single by Anna Prins to make it a 7-2 score.
