Olympia Haarlem opens Cup Winners Cup with big shutout-win

OSTRAVA (Czech Rep.) - FysioExpert Olympia Haarlem opened the European Cup Winners Cup in the Czech Republic on Monday (August 15) with a big 12-0 shutout-win against BCF de Paris from France.

Olympia Haarlem qualified for the event by reaching last years Holland Series in which is lost to Oolders Omaco Sparks Haarlem, which this week participates in the European Premiere Cup in Italy.

On the first day of the tournament in Ostrava, the first six games all ended in a shutout, which is an unique fact. In the final game of the day, both teams were able to score.

As always since the introduction of the rule some years ago, there are several pick-up players added to some of the participating teams, including players who play in the highest Dutch league (Golden League). Kimberly Jones (Terrasvogels) is on the roster of Atlético de San Sebastián (Spain), Annemiek Jansen and Myrthe Smid (both Tex Town Tigers) will play for Therwil Flyers (Switzerland), while Isa Los (also Tex Town Tigers) has been added to the team of Brasschaat Braves (Belgium). This team also has players, who have played or still also play in the Dutch Silver League for Roef!, including Ennia Ballardini, Charlotte Haen, Jasmin Kaiaruna, Gini Ketelaars, Eva van Knegsel, Wies Ligtvoet, Marjolein Merkx and Shauni Thys.

Former Terrasvogels-pitcher Monica Perry, who plays in the Italian League for Sestese, is for this tournament on the roster of Italian participant Legnano. Czech player Helena Novotna plays for Amager Vikings (Denmark), which is coached by New Zealander Israel Nukunuku, who led the Netherlands National Men Softball Team two years ago.

Olympia Haarlem also added two players to its roster: Sandy Lauwers (Twins) and Japanese player Tomoko Goda.

BCF de Paris vs. FysioExpert Olympia Haarlem
Olympia Haarlem immediately struck in the first inning. Eva Voortman led off with a single, then Brenda Beers was hit by a pitch and Dinet Oosting followed with a 3-run homerun.

In the second inning, Olympia again got on base. A walk for Maranca Ham, single for Judith Buschman and error on a grounder by Eva Voortman loaded the bases. No runs were scored, as a double play and grounder ended the inning.

One run was added in the third. Mariëlle Vleugels then led off with a double and went on to score on an one-out double by Shareday Christina.

Olympia Haarlem then decided the game with an 8-run rally in the top of the fourth inning off of new pitcher Giulia Bollini. The scoring went quickly in this at bat, as the first seven runs were scored with no outs. Judith Buschman and Tomoko Goda began with singles, then Brenda Beers followed with a runscoring single. With runners on second and third base, Dinet Oosting reached on a fielder's choice, which loaded the bases. All three runners then scored on a following double by Masha Meloni. Next batters Rachel van Veen and Sandy Lauwers then both reached on errors, resulting in another run. The bases got loaded again when pinch-hitter Roos-Marijn Kramer walked. Hereafter, two runs were added on a single by Maranca Ham. Next batter Judith Buschman then hit a sacrifice fly, which accounted for the first out and the eighth run in the inning.

The French opponent registered only one basehit off of three pitchers. Mariëlle Vleugels retired the side in the first, the lone inning she pitched. Tyla Morrison then took over in the second inning. She also retired the side in the two innings she threw, including four strikeouts. Roos-Marijn Kramer completed the game by pitching the fourth inning. With one out, she gave up a single to Anne Coudurier, which ended the Perfect Game. But hereafter, she closed the game with two strikeouts.

Amager Vikings vs. Brasschaat Braves
Brasschaat won 13-0 in five innings, scoring five runs in the fifth. The Belgium squad collected 13 basehits, including three by New Zealander Jasmin Kaiaruna, Shauni Thys and Lynn Boermans. Kaiaruna tripled, scored twice and batted in three runs, while Thys hit three doubles, scored once and batted in four runs. Amager registered only two basehits off of Marjolein Merkx (3 inn.) and Nina De Permentier (2 inn.).

Atlético de San Sebastián vs. Therwil Flyers
Therwil Flyers won 8-0 on ten basehits, including two by Myrthe Smid (one double), who also batted in three runs. Nina Wolfensbeger also had two basehits and scored twice for the Swiss team. Annemiek Jansen was 1-for-4 for the Flyers. Jamie Allred went the distance, struckout nine batters and gave up only three hits.

Brasschaat Braves vs. Mannheim Tornados
Brasschaat reached the 7-run difference mercy-rule in the bottom of the sixth inning when Eva van Knegsel led off with a single and later scored on a basesloaded walk for Ilse van Kerkoerle. Van Knegsel led the team with three basehits, including a triple, and also scored three runs. Wies Ligtvoet added two basehits. Pitcher Mikayla Endicott held the German opponent hitless and struckout eight batters.

Amager Vikings vs. Tempo Praha
The Czech squad needed only four innings to win 12-0 against the Danish Vikings. Winning pitcher Martina Blahová gave up three hits in the four innings she pitched.

Thewil Flyers vs. Legnano
Legnano won only 2-0 against Therwil, scoring its runs in the first and second inning. In the first, the run was scored on a single by Ilaria Pino and in the second, Clare Warwick tripled in the second run off of Nicole Nonnemacher, who held the Italians scoreless in the remainder of the game. Winning pitcher Greta Cecchetti struckout ten batters and gave up only two hits in pitching the first five innings. Monica Perry then completed the game and added five more strikeouts.

Arrows Ostrava vs. Tempo Praha
Arrows trailed 1-0 in this Czech match-up, but then scored twice in the fifth and sixth inning to win 4-1. Arrows collected only three hits off of Ellen Roberts, who went the distance for Praha. Lucie Kaplarczyková threw a complete game for Arrows and gave up six hits. In both the fifth and sixth inning, Arrows scored their runs on a throwing error, which not only enabled a runner, but also the batter to score.
