Win & loss Olympia Haarlem on Day 2 Cup Winners Cup
Nederlands

OSTRAVA (Czech Rep.) - FysioExpert Olympia Haarlem had to play two games on Tuesday (August 16) on Day 2 of the European Cup Winners Cup-tournament in the Czech Republic.

On a cloudy day in Ostrava, the Haarlem-squad won only 1-0 in its first game against Therwil Flyers (Switzerland).

In the evening, Olympia Haarlem faced Legnano and the weather conditions then would be of great influence. Olympia took an early 1-0 lead in the first inning and it appeared that this was to be lone run also in this game. However, the Italian opponent then scored four runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Olympia answered with two runs in the sixth. Halfway the sixth inning, the game was halted due to darkness. As the home team had taken the lead in the bottom of the fifth inning, it became an official game. With that, Olympia Haarlem suffered a loss with the official score becoming 4-1, as all records from the top of the sixth inning were reversed.

Afterwards, the management of Olympia Haarlem filed a complaint against the game schedule. On all days, except for Thursday, five games are scheduled on the main field at Arrows Park. While there is no light installation, the final game of the day is scheduled to begin at 6 PM, including the all-deciding Final next Saturday-evening. However, that starting time of course can vary (earlier/later) due to the length of the previous games. Besides that, cloudy weather conditions then can influence the game, which happened tonight.

Back in 2008, the same happened to late scheduled games on non-lighted fields during the European Cup Tournament, which then was held in Prague (Czech Republic). That also resulted in the suspension of games, resulting in some disturbance in the final ranking. Dutch representative Terrasvogels then also filed a protest against the scheduling of games.

By the way, for only the fourth time in history, Terrasvogels didn't qualify for participation in an European Cup-tournament this year. With 35 participations in European Cup-tournaments since the first one was organized in 1978, Terrasvogels is the recordholder. The last time that Terrasvogels didn't participate was in 2002.

Highlights of these games

(August 16)

FysioExpert Olympia Haarlem vs. Therwil Flyers
The first game today was a pitching-duel between Eva Voortman (Olympia Haarlem) and Jamie Allred (Therwil). Voortman had a better outing, striking out 14 batters, while Allred struckout six. Both teams registered only four basehits, but one of them decided the game for Olympia Haarlem.

Therwil reached base in each of the first three innings off of Voortman. In the first at bat, with one out, Kimberley Zehnder reached on an error, but she was caught stealing with two outs. In the second, Makenna Weir led off with a single and advanced on a sacrifice bunt, but hereafter, Voortman closed with two strikeouts. And in the third, Nina Wolfensbeger reached on a bunt-single with two outs, but stranded.

Olympia was retired in order in its first two at bats, but then got into scoring position in the third. Tyla Morrison led off with a single, then moved on a sacrifice bunt by Judith Buschman with one out. She reached third base on a bunt-single by Eva Voortman, but both were left behind.

The game was then decided with one mighty swing in the fourth inning. Dinet Oosting led off the fourth inning and got to a full count. She then fouled off three pitches, but connected well on the next one, hitting the ball over the fence in right-centerfield for a homerun. That not only gave Olympia an 1-0 lead, it also was to be the lone run in this game. Oosting also homered in the first game on Monday.

In the fifth inning, Adeline Glauser singled for the Swiss opponent with two outs, but Voortman closed with another strikeout. The lefthander then struckout the side in the sixth.

Olympia Haarlem came close to addding a run in the bottom of the sixth. With two outs, Dinet Oosting singled, then stole second base and moved to third base when an error followed. This time, she stranded as a line drive by Mariëlle Vleugels was caught.

In the top of the seventh, Voortman hit Jamie Allred with a pitch with one out, then gave up a single to Dutch player Annemiek Jansen. The lefthander again recovered well and ended the game by striking out her 13th and 14th batter.

Legnano vs. FysioExpert Olympia Haarlem
In its second game, Olympia Haarlem opened the score quickly in the first inning. American Monica Perry started for Legnano and began with two strikeouts. The former pitcher of Terrasvogels then gave up three consecutive singles. Dinet Oosting first singled, then Mariëlle Vleugels did the same. Moments later, Oosting scored when Shareday Christina also singled, but hereafter, Perry closed with another strikeout.

Monica Perry pitched for Terrasvogels in its championship season of 2013 when the team also won the European Cup Winners Cup. Her battery mate at the Santpoort-team then was Kate Gentile, who now is an Assistant Coach and player of Olympia Haarlem.

The two faced each other in the second inning, but Gentile then flied out. With two outs, Tomoko Goda tripled, but later was eliminated trying to steal the plate.

In the third inning, Perry retired the side. In the fourth inning, the righthander gave up a 2-out double to Rachel van Veen, but closed with a strikeout. She then retired the side again in the fifth.

Mariëlle Vleugels started for Olympia Haarlem. In the bottom of the first inning, she hit lead-off hitter Clare Warwick, but then struckout the next two batters. The inning ended when Warwick was caught stealing.

Vleugels then retired the side in the second and third inning. After having retired ten consecutive batters, she saw Chelsea Cohen reach on an error with two outs in the bottom of the fourth, but she was left behind.

In the bottom of the fifth, the No-Hitter and shutout of Olympia ended, as Legano rallied for four runs with two outs. Francesca Rossini led off with a single, but her pinch-runner Fadwa Ben Karim was forced out on a following grounder by Barbara Ungari. She was moved into scoring position via a sacrifice bunt by Monica Perry. Hereafter, the Italians got the bases loaded when Greta Cecchetti walked and Roberta Pasca singled. The three runners all scored when Clare Warwick followed with a 3-run triple. Moments later, Warwick scored herself on a single by Briana McGovern to make it a 4-1 score.

Greta Cecchetti then took over the pitching for Legnano in the top of the sixth. But she gave up three hits and saw Olympia Haarlem come back immediately. Brenda Beers led off with a bunt-single, then the bases got loaded when Dinet Oosting walked and Mariëlle Vleugels singled. Hereafter, Shareday Christina delivered a 2-run single. She moved on a grounder by Rachel van Veen, but Cecchetti followed with a strikeout. With first base open, Kate Gentile received an intentional pass. Cechetti closed with another strikeout to secure the lead.

With that, Cecchetti would have been credited with a save. However, as the sixth inning was dropped from the records, Cecchetti's performance, as well as the Olympia-hitting in this at bat were erased.
