Olympia Haarlem finishes preliminary round Cup Winners Cup with win
Nederlands

OSTRAVA (Czech Rep.) - FysioExpert Olympia Haarlem closed the preliminary round of the European Cup Winners Cup on Wednesday (August 17) with a 10-6 victory against Atlético de San Sebastián from Spain. With the win, Olympia Haarlem finished in second place in Pool B to secure a spot in the top-6.

A loss would have resulted in a 3-way tie with the Spanish squad and Therwil Flyers (Switzerland). As the head-to-head results of these three teams also would create a tie, the Team Quality Balance would have decided the ranking. And that might have been non-favorable for Olympia Haarlem depending of the score against the Spanish squad.

But it didn't come that far and so, Olympia Haarlem now is in the Championship Round with Legnano (Italy) and Therwil, while Atlético was eliminated.

By the way, starting today, the starting times for the last scheduled game on each day was adjusted and now will start at approximately 5:30 PM, instead of 6 PM. The final next Saturday begins at 5 PM.

On Tuesday-evening, the match-up between Olympia Haarlem and Legnano was halted halfway the sixth inning due to darkness, while it was not even 8 PM. But a cloudy day can be of influence, as the fields in Ostrava are not lighted. Olympia Haarlem trailed 4-3 when the game was stopped and might have had a chance to turn it its way when the game could have been continued. The Haarlem-squad filed a complaint against the late starting times and it was decided to change them for the remainder of the tournament.

Because of the loss, Olympia opens the next round with an 1-1 record. On Thursday-morning at 9 AM, the team now will meet Tempo Praha (Czech Republic), then plays against Mannheim Tornados (Germany) in the afternoon. On Friday, Olympia meets Brasschaat Braves (Belgium), which has stayed unbeaten in Pool A. The top-4 will then continue to the Play-Offs.

Other scores today:

FysioExpert Olympia Haarlem vs. Atlético de San Sebastián
Olympia Haarlem initially faced an early 1-0 deficit after the top of the first inning. With one out, starting pitcher Tyla Morrison gave up singles to Rebeca Carrera and Michela Musitelli. The latter was then force out on a grounder by Constanza Busso and in a following steal-situation, Carrera opened the score.

The lead didn't last long, as Olympia reacted with two runs in its first at bat off of Spanish National Team-pitcher Ane Barandiaran. Eva Voortman led off with a single, advanced on a passed ball and a sacrifice bunt by Brenda Beers, then scored the tying run on a fielder's choice-grounder by Dinet Oosting. The latter then scored the next run when Mariëlle Vleugels followed with a double.

Olympia then rallied for five runs in the second inning to take a comfortable 7-1 lead. With one out, the bases got loaded when Maranca Ham reached on an error, Eva Voortman singled (bunt) and Brenda Beers walked. Two runs were then scored on a double by Dinet Oosting and then Mariëlle Vleugels added a 3-run homerun.

Another run was scored in the third inning. Judith Buschman led off with a walk, moved on two grounders, then scored on a bunt-single by Eva Voortman.

With that, Olympia was now leading 8-1 and appeared to be en route to a mercy-rule victory. However, that changed in the next innings and in the end, the full game had to be played.

The Spanish opponent rallied for three runs in the top of the fourth inning to cut the deficit in half. With one out, a run was scored on an error, then Eider Rodríguez added a 2-run single to make it an 8-4 score. With a runner on second base and one out, the inning ended when Kimberly Jones lined into a double play. Her line drive was nicely caught by Japanese centerfielder Tomoko Goda, who then doubled up Rodríguez at second base.

Olympia immediately took some distance by scoring two runs in the bottom of the fourth. With one out and Cheska Ham (fielder's choice) on first base, Sandy Lauwers walked. The two moved on a sacrifice bunt by Judith Buschman, then scored on a following double by Masha Meloni.

Olympia now led 10-4, but then was held scoreless in the remainder of the game, while Atlético added two more runs.

In the fifth, the Spanish team scored an unearned run, but also left two runners behind. After Olympia was retired in order in its fifth and stranded two runners in the sixth, Atlético scored another unearned run in the top of the seventh. Lead-off hitter Rebeca Carrera reached on an error, then moved to third on an one-out double by Constanza Busso. Hereafter, a double play led to the run and also ended the game. Carrera scored on a sacrifice fly by Estibaliz Alvarez, but then Busso was eliminated at second base to complete the double play and ending the game.

Both teams collected ten basehits in this game. Eva Voortman was 3-for-4 for Olympia, while Mariëlle Vleugels doubled and homered, batting in four runs. Dinet Oosting batted in three runs.

Atlético de San Sebastián vs. Legnano
Legnano scored its first run in the first inning, but then was held scoreless. It took the Italians until the seventh inning to decide the game and add three more runs. Legnano used four different pitchers, who gave up only two hits combined. Initially, it used a fifth pitcher, who was announced as starter in the starting line-up, but she didn't pitch. Monica Perry, who struckout three batters in the third and fourth inning, was credited with the win. Briana McGovern was 3-for-4 for Legnano.

Arrows needed just three innings to win this game, scoring six runs in the first and seven in the third at bat. The Czechs hit only seven hits, while the Danish committed four defensive errors. Winning pitcher Barbora Stusková gave up only one basehit.

Therwil Eagles vs. BCF de Paris

Dutch players Myrthe Smid and Annemiek Jansen both had one basehit and batted in one run for the Swiss team.

Brasschaat Braves vs. Arrows Ostrava
The final game today began at 5:30 PM and ended at 7:45 PM, which was the same time at which the match-up between Olympia Haarlem and Legnano had to be stopped the evening before due to darkness. The difference is that this last game was halfway the sixth inning when it was halted. Today, the game could be played in its entirety and that everything is possible in late innings was underscored in this match-up. Brasschaat trailed 5-3 halfway the fifth inning and 6-4 halfway the sixth. But the Belgians then scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth to win 7-6 and stay unbeaten. In the sixth, Lynn Boermans reached on an error, then Eva van Knegsel walked. Hereafter, Jasmin Kaiaruna connected for a 3-run homerun that gave the Belgians the victory!
