Olympia Haarlem finishes preliminary round Cup Winners Cup with win
Nederlands
OSTRAVA (Czech Rep.) -
FysioExpert Olympia Haarlem closed the preliminary round of the European Cup Winners Cup on Wednesday (August 17) with a 10-6 victory against Atlético de San Sebastián from Spain.
With the win, Olympia Haarlem finished in second place in Pool B to secure a spot in the top-6.
A loss would have resulted in a 3-way tie with the Spanish squad and Therwil Flyers (Switzerland).
As the head-to-head results of these three teams also would create a tie, the Team Quality Balance would have decided the ranking.
And that might have been non-favorable for Olympia Haarlem depending of the score against the Spanish squad.
But it didn't come that far and so, Olympia Haarlem now is in the Championship Round with Legnano (Italy) and Therwil, while Atlético was eliminated.
By the way, starting today, the starting times for the last scheduled game on each day was adjusted and now will start at approximately 5:30 PM, instead of 6 PM.
The final next Saturday begins at 5 PM.
On Tuesday-evening, the match-up between Olympia Haarlem and Legnano was halted halfway the sixth inning due to darkness, while it was not even 8 PM.
But a cloudy day can be of influence, as the fields in Ostrava are not lighted.
Olympia Haarlem trailed 4-3 when the game was stopped and might have had a chance to turn it its way when the game could have been continued.
The Haarlem-squad filed a complaint against the late starting times and it was decided to change them for the remainder of the tournament.
Because of the loss, Olympia opens the next round with an 1-1 record.
On Thursday-morning at 9 AM, the team now will meet Tempo Praha (Czech Republic), then plays against Mannheim Tornados (Germany) in the afternoon.
On Friday, Olympia meets Brasschaat Braves (Belgium), which has stayed unbeaten in Pool A.
The top-4 will then continue to the Play-Offs.
