Netherlands Under-19 Team also scoreless in third game
Nederlands

IRVINE, California (USA) - The Netherlands U-19 Softball Team was also left scoreless in its third game of the preliminary round of the U19 World Cup. On Monday (August 12), the team lost 9-0 against Chinese Taipei in a 4½ inning game. Besides not scoring a run, the Orange Team also was held hitless.

On Sunday, the Netherlands opened with a fine game against Canada, but lost 2-0. Later on the day, the team was shutout 7-0 by New Zealand.

With three losses, the team finished in fourth and last place in Pool D, which probably was the strongest of the four pools. With that, the Netherlands now will continue to play in the pool for 13th to 16th place, playing three more games. In this pool, the team meets Ireland (Pool C), Botswana (Pool A) and South Africa (Pool B) on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. These teams also remained winless in their pools.

Brazil (Pool C), the Czech Republic (Pool A), Italy (Pool C) and New Zealand (Pool D) all won once and now will continue to play in the pool for ninth to twelfth place.

The two best teams of each pool advanced to the Super Round. They are Australia (B), Canada (D), China (C), Chinese Taipei (D), Japan (B), Mexico (A), Puerto Rico (C) and USA (A). The USA, Japan, Puerto Rico and Canada all remained unbeaten in their pool, winning three games.

The teams in the Super Round take the win against the number two from their pool with them. From Tuesday on, the eight teams will each play six more games through Friday. The two best teams then meet in the Final on Saturday. The teams that finish in third and fourth place in the Super Round will play for the bronze medal on Saturday.

(August 12)

On Monday, eight of the ten scheduled games ended in a shutout. Seven of them finished earlier via the run-difference, mercy-rule. The only shutout in seven innings was the 3-0 by Australia against Italy.

The Dutch team reached base only once against Chinese Taipei. With two outs in the second inning, pitcher Ching-Yu Chen walked Isa Smit. She stranded on first base, as a grounder followed. In the following three innings, Chen retired nine batters in a row and with that, she almost threw a Perfect Game.

Chinese Taipei opened the score with two runs in the first inning off of starting pitcher Margot van Eijl. Chia-Yun Chang and Ting-En Chiang began with singles, then An-Hsin Chen followed with an RBI-double and Chia-Hsuan Lin added a runscoring single. Chen also tried to score on Lin's basehit, but she was eliminated at the plate. Hereafter, Jia-Ling Yu accounted for the fifth consecutive basehit. Next, a flyout accounted for the second out, but the bases then got loaded when Hao-Fang Yeh was hit by a pitch. Three runners were left behind when a drive by Mei Hong into deep centerfield was caught by Nina Oomes.

The Asian team added three runs in the second at bat. Yu-Hsin Wu and Chia-Yun Chang opened with bunt-singles, then advanced on a wild pitch. With one out, both scored on a single by An-Hsin Chen. That was followed by a pitching change, as Isanthe Rouwenhorst took over. With two outs, she got the bases loaded after a single and a walk. A wild pitch then accounted for the third run in the inning and raised Taipei's lead to 5-0.

Chinese Taipei continued scoring in the next two innings. Two more runs were added in the third in which the Dutch defense made one error. A single by Ting-En Chiang and a grounder by An-Hsin Chen then led to the runs.

In the bottom of the fourth, Taipei increased the lead to 9-0 by again scoring two runs. This time, both runs were scored on an error.
