IRVINE, California (USA) - The Netherlands Under-19 Softball Team recorded an 8-2 win against South Africa on Thursday-afternoon (August 15), which was Day 6 of the U19 Softball World Cup. For the Orange Team, this was its third consecutive victory in the Placement Pool for 13th through 16th place. It also was the team's last game of the event and with that, it finished in 13th place.

In the Preliminary Round, the Orange Team was shutout in each of the three games it played. On Sunday, the Netherlands opened with a fine game against Canada, but lost 2-0. Later on the day, the team was shutout 7-0 by New Zealand. On Monday, the team lost 9-0 and was left hitless against Chinese Taipei in a 4½ inning game.

On Tuesday, the Netherlands opened the Placement Round with a 6-0 win against Ireland, playing a good game. The team then committed five errors the next day, but won 12-7 against Botswana, which made nine errors.

In today's game, the Netherlands collected nine basehits, including an inside-the-park-homerun by Nina Oomes.

In the Placement Pool for ninth to twelfth place, Italy won 9-1 against Brazil on Wednesday after having been shutout 6-0 by the Czech Republic on Tuesday. The Czech team lost 4-2 to New Zealand on Wednesday. The Czechs closed the event on Thursday with a 10-3 win against Brazil, while Italy was to play against New Zealand in the evening.

On Wednesday, Japan won twice in the Super Round, winning 6-1 vs. China and 7-0 vs. Canada. Japan remained unbeaten, as it had started this round on Tuesday with a 10-0 win against Puerto Rico. With that, Japan became the first team to qualify for the all-deciding Final on Saturday. On Thursday-evening, Japan plays against reigning champion USA, which also is still unbeaten. The American squad opened the Super Round on Tuesday with a 12-0 win against Canada, then shutout Puerto Rico 6-0 on Wednesday. The USA plays two games on Thursday. Before facing Japan in the evening, it played against Chinese Taipei in the late afternoon.

(August 15)

As it had done in the previous two games, the Netherlands Team struck early. This time, the team scored three runs in the top of the first inning en route to an 8-2 victory.

With one out in the first inning, Nina Oomes walked for the Orange squad. Next batter Nicky Uytendaal hit the ball into right-centerfield for a single, which brought Oomes to third base. In an attempt to eliminate Uytendaal at second base, an error was made. That enabled Oomes to score, while Uytendaal advanced to third base. Moments later, she scored when Sterre den Duijn hit a single. After Den Duijn had stolen second base, she scored on a following single by Tess Remmers to make it a 3-0 score. Shortly thereafter, Remmers advanced to third base when a pick-off to first base ended in another error. Next batter Isa Smit walked. A double-steal attempt followed, but Remmers was eliminated at the plate. Smit moved to second base in this situation, but stranded there.

In the bottom of the first inning, the first two South African batters reached base off of Orange-starter Margot van Eijl. The righthander walked lead-off hitter Kelsey Fortuin, then gave up a single to Itumeleng Moreroa. But the first was forced out at third base, the next two batters were retired and no runs were scored.

The Netherlands added a run in the second at bat. Amy Lynn Felix led off with a walk, moved into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt by Jacky Huijben and scored on a single by Yindi Beekveldt. That led to a pitching change. Grivonne Rhoda then took over from France Price. Rhoda had been the announced starter, but was replaced by Price (who was the starting designated player) when the game began. Hereafter, Beekveldt stole second base and Nina Oomes singled, but a strikeout and foul-out then ended the Dutch at bat.

In the bottom of the second inning, Margot van Eijl gave up an one-out single, but also struckout three batters.

In the third inning, South Africa came close to scoring its first run when Itumeleng Moreroa hit a triple with one out. But she was left behind, as a foul-out and flyout followed.

South Africa got another scoring opportunity in the bottom of the fourth and this time, the team scored. Nushka de Beer led off with a double down the leftfield-line, then Shane Luyt singled. With runners on first and third base, Margot van Eijl struckout the next batter, but then gave up a runscoring single to Antonia De Bruyn. That led to a pitching change, as Romy van der Ham took over for the Netherlands. While striking out batter Mmahiine Ramaila, she got runners at second and third base when the third strike ended in a wild pitch. The two runners were left behind.

Moments later, the Netherlands added a run in the top of the fifth when Nina Oomes led off with a stand-up inside-the-park-homerun down the leftfield-line.

In the bottom of the fifth, Itumeleng Moreroa led off with her third basehit in the game. However, the productive South African leftfielder sustained an apparent hamstring-injury to her left leg while reaching first base and had to leave the game. Her pinch-runner Gillian Hale moved to second base with one out when Van der Ham hit Melissa Savage with a pitch. Hale was then forced out at third base on a grounder by Nushka De Beer. With runners at first and second base, South Africa added a run when next batter Shane Luyt delivered a single. Savage scored and De Beer advanced to second base. When catcher Tess Remmers lost control over the ball on the throw to the plate, De Beer tried to advance to third base, but was eliminated there, ending the inning.

The Orange Team got the run back immediately in its sixth at bat. Lead-off hitter Isa Smit drove the ball into deep centerfield for a lead-off triple, then scored on a following grounder by Lisa Meyering, who had entered the game in the previous inning at first base. Another South African pitching change followed and also a new catcher took over behind the plate. New pitcher Chesterney Fortune walked pinch-hitter Lieke Süskind, who moved on a wild pitch. With two outs, she scored when Yindi Beekveldt reached second base on an error. Next batter Nina Oomes then also reached on an error and later stole second base. But Beekveldt and Oomes stranded on third and second base, respectively.

South Africa got another baserunner in the bottom of the sixth when Antonia De Bruyn walked with one out. But she was eliminated moments later in an unassisted double play when 1B Lisa Meyering caught a line drive hit by next batter Mmahiine Koketso.

In the top of the seventh inning, the Netherlands increased the lead to 8-2 by adding a run. With one out, pinch-hitter Julia van der Meer struckout, but reached on a wild pitch. With two outs, she moved to third base on a single by Lisa Meyering, then scored when Lieke Süskind also singled. Hereafter, the bases got loaded when Michelle Schuur walked. But the three runners were left behind when a flyout ended the at bat.

In the bottom of the seventh inning, Romy van der Ham retired the side to end the game.
