However, the softball-season is currently on hold, as all regular season-games have been annuled through June 30 because of measures taken against the spread of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. New dates have not yet been announced. (© Photo: Henk Seppen) From March 12 on, the Government of the Netherlands regularly announced several (strict) measures due to the coronavirus. In a following update on May 6, a little more freedom was announced, but it was also said that official games and competitions remain prohibited through September 1. The latest update was last Wednesday (May 27). From June 1 on, some of the measures are loosened up somewhat, including opening (parts of) restaurants, terraces and schools. On May 12, the Royal Netherlands Baseball and Softball Association (KNBSB) announced that it has annuled all official regular season games in all baseball/softball leagues through Tuesday, June 30. The KNBSB is in talks with the NOC*NSF (Netherlands Olympic Committee/Netherlands Sports Federations) regarding options how to continue, as it still hopes a new season can be played this year. During this Pentecost Weekend, in the original schedule three double-headers were scheduled for Saturday and one on Whitsun-Monday (Quick Amersfoort vs. Terrasvogels). However, in the later published schedule, all four double-headers were to be played on Saturday, which was a day with nice temperatures in the entire, which felt as 25 degrees Celsius (77 F). After today's series of double-headers, the regular season was scheduled to be interrupted for the 22nd European Softball Championship. No games were scheduled in the hightest league for the next two weeks. The European Championship was to be played June 7-13 at several sites in the Friuli Venezia Giulia Region in Northern Italy, an area that was hit hard by the coronavirus in the first months of this year. On April 2, the European Softball Federation (ESF) postponed the Championship to September 20-26. The tournament serves as Qualifier for three events. The top-3 qualifies for the WBSC Women's World Cup 2021, the Champion also qualifies for the World Games 2021 and the top-6 qualifies for the Super6 2022. On May 4, the World Baseball Softball Confederation (WBSC) announced that the World Cup was postponed to 2023 and that the World Games were moved to 2022. Since there was no need to have a Qualifier this year, the ESF announced on May 5 that the European Championship has been postponed to next year. In another tournament-format opposed to previous editions, the eight best countries of the 2019 Championship qualified for the Second Round of this years Championship, divided into two Pools (A and B). In the First Round, fourteen countries were to play in four Pools (C, D, E, F). The winners of these Pools then would be assigned to Pools A and B for the Second Round. The Netherlands will be playing in Pool B with France, Greece, Great Britain, the winner of Pool D (Bulgaria, Croatia, Israel or Ukraine) and the winner of Pool E (Austria, Lithuania or Poland). We don't know when, but softball and baseball of course also will be back in the Netherlands! Of course only when it is safe to do so for everyone involved. Until then, take care and stay safe!
